  • Welcome back to Fluctus for a feature on the career path of the mariners working in the cargo containership, as well as the perks and challenges of working miles away from the shoreline. And before reaching the shoreline, the vessel often faces another challenge of trying to berth the massive vessel in an unfamiliar harbor that requires external assistance to come on board.
Fluctus is a website and UA-cam channel dedicated to sea geeks. Whenever you are curious or an incorrigible lover of this mysterious world, our videos are made for you !

When I was deep sea fishing off the Gulf of Mexico, there was a container ship fully up out of the water (when the containers are on it, it sits down low in the water due to the weight of the cargo), docked in the middle of the ocean. You couldn't see land in any direction. The anchor chain links were the size of a pickup truck. I've never seen anything like it and there were double sets of chains for each anchor. It was like 20 stories high and you could see the water spiraling around it that would have sucked our 75' yacht right under if we got closer than about 20 feet.

So intriguing, undoubtedly an attractive monetary compensation along with the traveling the world enviable opportunity that comes with the job but, I wonder what's the toll it takes on one's lifestyle?, personal relationships? physically also...is it too drastic of an alteration or not really?

Good luck to you. What country are you from? What job will you hold?
I just read Ninety percent of everything : inside shipping, the invisible industry that puts clothes on your back, gas in your car, and food on your plate - by Rose George. Not the whole story but an interesting perspective.

Thought that the 'Ice Pilot' disembarking off the ship onto a Platform would have been wearing some class of a Survival suit maybe just a really thick a Full Neoprene wet Suit although it would have limited his mobility somewhat ...but then again if he missed that transit onto the platform, he would have been in freezing Water for quite a while...

My first thoughts, the majority do not make 6 figures. OS, AS, junior ratings will definitely not. Also depends on flag state and what nationality is crewing.
Mainly senior deck and engine officers from Western nations will make those figures.

jajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajaja 6 figure salary..usually the Master, the CE and CO...the rest by nationality, with the lowest paid might be getting 1500 dollars a month filipino, Indian crews...the food is good, accommodation very good..but once you reach port no rest..you are jumping from one port to another...and if you go to Houston, Nola ...a lot of standby time followed with watch and cargo operations...the slavery of the modern world..
