    HOW TO BUNDLE DYE AT HOME WITH FLOWERS | NATURAL DYE | BOTANICAL COLOUR
    Bundle dyeing is one of the most fun and satisfying ways of using plant matter to transfer colour to your fiber. The results are literally pure magic and the nature of this process makes it perfect for professional projects or fun family activities.
    Natural dyes are often described as “living colours” and it’s true. They have a charm and personality very unlike synthetic dyes with the much higher energetic frequency of life … and love if you’re into that kinda thing!
    They are really easy to work with and non-toxic which is a big draw for a lot of people. They will never have the same permanence as synthetic dyes, they often change or vary over time, they are always dancing and they dance especially harmoniously together.
    Bundle dyeing with plants can really open up your creativity. It encourages play and experimentation whilst deepening your relationship to nature and it’s alchemy.
    BillyNou is about the wonderful process of natural dyeing I do for my brand, life, motherhood and the trails and errors of making and crafting.

    I’d like to inspire others to become more conscientious, to find a connection with nature and benefit from this immense and totally accessible energy.

    I live on the Laguna Indian Reservation in NM for 14 years... There wildflower petals (along with corn pollen and prayer meal) were used to attract deer when hunting... They were sprinkled in the campfire while saying prayers to attract the deer to the hunters... The last time I went hunting and I did this, it attracted a HUGE herd of elk during the night which came right up to the tent...

    • @billynou

    As always, love your videos :)) is it possible to bundle die something like a pre-made dress successfully? I have a 100% cotton dress that I want to bundle dye with cochineal, lockwood, indigo, and turmeric. Not certain if the dyes will release to both the front and back of the dress if i lay it on the top of the fabric like a typical bundle dye, or if it’s better to place the dyes between the two pieces of fabric in the middle of the dress so the colors soak to both sides?

    • @GracieK419

      Ooo and onion skins :)

    • @billynou
      @billynou  4 роки тому +1

      Hellooo. Yes it is definitely possible to dye a pre made dress... the process is exactly the same as if it was just a piece of fabric. Because you roll the fabric when bundle dyeing you do get colours on both sides but you can always just chuck some in the middle to be safe 😉 I would definitely mordant your dress before dyeing as it’s cotton though 💗

    Love your little helper. She is adorable. I was wondering if you used vinegar also for making the color say. I know that normally we start with some kind of fixing agent. Did you use that and if so, what is it?

    • @billynou
      @billynou  2 роки тому

      Haha yes she is the best!! Vinegar isn’t really a fixer but yes I do mordant my fibers, usually with alum or alum acetate depending if the fiber is cellulose or protein 😊

    would you say it gives a better color with dried flowers / vegetables / herbs or with fresh ones or is there no difference? thank you for the inspiration!

    • @billynou
      @billynou  4 роки тому +2

      I would say there are always going to be unmeasurable differences resulting in varying shades and results ... it’s definitely best to experiment and see what you like best ... sometimes I prefer the results I get with dried and others with fresh and sometimes you can use fresh or dried twice and still get different results. It’s always a bit of a surprise and this is why I love it 🦄

    how do you take care of such beautiful fabrics to make them hold the color? should I hand wash them only? is vinegar enough to make it permanent? I love this and will try it first on cotton t-shirt and some other things if I get good at it! you are great, keep doing these, you are my newest inspiration 💛🌞

    • @billynou
      @billynou  3 роки тому +1

      Hey love... it depends on how you pre treat the fibers. You would need to mordant cotton first but could get away with no mordant on silk. Sadly vinegar isn’t a mordant... just something to spice up the colours a little. You also need to take care with the after care... using ph neutral soap and hand wash with cool water.
      If you want a bit more info you might like some of our E-books available in the links below the video. They explain the basics.

    Was the fabric scoured and mordanted first or did you just use vinegar? Do you also have any videos or information on how you clean the fabrics? I've read that I need to machine wash at 90 degrees then boil in a pan with detergent and soda... would you bother

    • @billynou
      @billynou  3 роки тому

      Hey 😊 yes the fabric has been scoured and mordanted. Depending what fiber you’re using depends on how to pretreat it... sometimes I don’t mordant silk for example. I have a few ebooks available bellow the video or from my website with a bit more info if you’re interested. ❤️

    Hi do you know what plant / any other natural material to make black dye?

    • @billynou
      @billynou  4 роки тому

      Hey. Black is quite a difficult colour to achieve in the natural dye world. It tends to take a few layers of colours to get a dark colour that is often not a true black. Some dyes used are often black walnut and logwood with an iron mordant. 🖤🖤

  • @hedysladovich1737

    • @billynou
      @billynou  3 роки тому

      I’m using bamboo fiber. Try it with silk first as it takes the dyes easily without having to mordant and you won’t be disappointed with the results. I always hand wash with cool water and ph neutral soaps. I have a little ebook available too if you want a bit more written info on the process 💕💕

    Hiya, does the colour stay in the fabric if you wash it?

    • @billynou
      @billynou  4 роки тому

      Hi. It all depends on what fabric you use and how you pretreat and care for your fabrics after dyeing. The colours will never stay like synthetic dyes. They are likely to change or fade over time but this is really an opportunity to see colour and our clothes with a different perspective and to enjoy the life of the colours.
