My name is Rob Hendrix and I live in The Netherlands. I love your shaving videos very much. For about 10 years I shave with DE (Merkur 38c and Gillette Fatboy) but mostly straight shave. I really got addicted to it. I use my straight razor daily. I remember my first shave very well. The next morning my fellow worker asked me if I have had a fight with my cat 🤣. I had so many scratches. But after about 5 or 6 shaves I didn't cut myself anymore. But it to several months, maby half a year, to get a real good technique and have a baby butt smooth shave without cuts ore nicks. To my opinion, you have a closer shave with a straight comparing to a DE, once your technique is good. And it is soooo relaxing. I enjoy it every day. Goodbye fellow shavers 👊

I started shaving with a straight razor in August 2021 coming directly from a cartridge razor. I began with a 6/8 Thierrs Issard round point and now have a growing collection of straight razors from 2/8 to 7/8. I have two 7/8 blades (one which was made in 1920) by the way and use both of them occasionally. It definitely took me a year, shaving once or twice a week, to become moderately confident with a straight razor and I wouldn't say that I am fully confident yet. Yes, I do occasionally nick myself, something I never did with a cartridge, but the entire experience is completely different. As Matt says, there is a meditative element to the shave. Shaving for me now is no longer a chore - it is a ritual, and a ritual that I love. I can't imagine ever reverting to a conventional razor! And I never shave in a hurry. If I don't have time to execute the entire ritual, from stropping to tidying up and thoroughly drying and cleaning the blade, then I don't shave. Often times that means that I have a few days stubble growth on my face but you really cannot have a quick shave with one of these bad boys. I reckon 20 minutes minimum to 30 minutes.

I'm sold, gotta love a USA made product, and this has been something I've always thought about. I'm pretty in depth with knives, and as a hunter/fisherman Ive used a knife a lot. So I feel like I have a good sense of the boundaries. I always wanted to use a straight razor. Anytime I went to a barber shop that used a straight razor I always left feeling better and cleaner. Plus I've been sharpening knives since about 9/10 years old. So I feel like I have a good sense of how to do it. Just gotta get one. Just started with the rex envoy a few days ago, and for my first two shaves ever with a de I've had no problems at all, and really enjoy it. Looking forward to the next step.

I shave almost exclusively with a straight
I started 13 years ago with my grandfather's Boker King Cutter. I mostly use a 9/8 Wade & Butcher now. It took me about a year to really get a great shave though. The skin sensation is far and away better than a multi blade and if I decide to go a week without shaving, it doesn't clog up or hesitate to mow down beard growth. It's the only way to shave in my opinion 😎👍

Great looking razor! I like the Spanish tip and the weight in the spine. When I finally upgraded from a 5/8 to a 7/8 straight razor the big improvement was smoothness due to added weight in the spine of the new blade. It cut my tough whiskers with much less resistance and so made shaving more comfortable. I did go transition directly from cartridge razors to a 5/8 stainless round nose straight razor. Although it took some time getting used to, I never even considered going back. I shaved with that same razor and soap every day or every other day for 4 years. After that I upgraded to a 7/8 Spanish tip which was much nicer to shave with and look at. After a while I transitioned to DE razors for the convenience. I love it too.
Today I will tentatively shave with the straight razor like Matt just did. I think the hot towel prep will be necessary though.
    Thanks for another great video!
Ok, I went and shaved with my straight razor. It’s obviously a perishable skill! I gave up after four passes. My shave turned out ok but I expected to get it much closer in three passes. I have decided to do this every weekend until I can always get a good straight razor shave.

Hi Matt- Great straight razor shave; thank you! Kudos on the shave! If you were out of practice, your experience still comes though when you are shaving. A beautiful razor! Have a great weekend ahead. Be safe and be well. Best regards, always, Matt!

It's definitely beautiful and solidly built, but mine was NOT "shave ready". Not even close. Didn't finish the first shave with it and haven't used it since because it needs honing. Not a negative review and I don't regret buying it. It's a great piece and RE is still my favorite store. Just some feedback on my experience.

I went right from having a big bushy beard that I'd trim when I could be bothered to using a straight razor with no DE or shavette experience and it's been great! Love my Ralf Aust.

HI Matt. I am chuckling because a 7/8 straight razor is a toy to me. I shave with a 10/8 Max Sprecher and a 13/8 ArtRazor. I started straight shaving with a Dovo shavette and after 14 shaves decided to get a 5/8 Dovo straight razor. That was in the beginning of Nov 2018. I needed a challenge and got my 10/8 Sprecher in June 2020 for my 65th birthday. I had about 325 to 350 open blade shaves under my belt. I didn't have a problem shaving with a 10/8 blade, except to turn my head more so I can see the edge better. Loved my Sprecher. I saw a UA-cam video of someone shaving with a 12/8 razor and thought it was so cool. I found a Ukrainian razor maker and he was able to make a 13/8 square point. I received it last May 2021. That is my ArtRazor 1000. Again, never had a problem from day one with this razor as well. In three and a half years of straight/shavette shaving, there isn't a straight razor that can intimidate me. I have seen youtube shavers use a real cleaver to shave their beards and that's where I draw the line. Take care.

Matt💈💈 Good go there bud, no blood... I regret not keeping my str8 razors but I just didn't have the knack for using them, not to mention the maintenance was time consuming and expensive. I like the romance and nostalgia of using a str8, it's the actual results that were lacking for me. Oh well, that's OK, I can always watch you shave with a beautiful, hand made piece of shave art. Great shave and video, thanks. Enjoy!

That looks nice Matt but I am too old and my right shoulder is too stiff now to use a straight edge razor although I have a few of them. I found sharpening them was a real test and not very successful. One tip I would like to pass on is that I now use Thayer's witch hazel and Proraso white as pre-shave mix and then lather up and it works perfectly with my favourite razors the Rockwell Model T and or the Gillette Black Beauty I got from you. Then I finish off with Thayer's medicated witch hazel again unfortunately you cannot source the medicated stuff anymore🙂 Just one thing why don't you try wiping the blade on some throw away facial tissue paper - my late father used to use newspaper back in the day wiping the blade away from the edge as in you do when stropping.

I picked up the Parker SRX shavette over Christmas to see if I like it. Totally understand the nuiances with technique. Unfortunately I am still unable to get as close of a shave as I do with a safety razor.

I have the Rex Ambassador safety razor and I actually liked it from the beginning and still like it. I actually want to get a straight razor for two reasons. One shaving should be a good experience rather than a chore which is why I got into traditional wet shaving. Two I like the challenge of learning something new and straight razor shaving fits that bill. The Rex straight razor might end up in my arsenal for shaving.

Great video as always I have a question I can't seem to find nor can I get an answer from anyone. I asked on one of your 5yr vids but don't know if you respond to comments on old vids. I have acquired an old Wilkinson Sword Razor (like the Valet Autostrop) in a wood box with an old strop in a (buckle/keeper). The strop is very dry and I want to at least recondition it but afraid of cracking or breaking it where the folds are. How would I go about doing this without causing more damage? Any help is much appreciated. Thank you Matt

Newbie to straight ravor shaving. Going to spend more time practicing. I started with a shavette, and before that I used both a DE and a DE slant
The one piece of advice I would give is start with very little angle, and repeat your shave until you find your angle, then worry about pressure. I find that straight razors/shavettes work better for certain parts of my face. I also don't go against the grain, or across the grain. Just looking to master With the grain first. I can always do the other passes (if needed with a DE) until I get comfortable with those angles from a straight razor.
With straight razor shaving, its slow and steady wins the race

Shavettes are much harder to control than real straight razors.
They are much, much sharper whilst being a lot stiffer. Its much less forgiving than a straight razor, where the hollow grind gives it a bit of flexibility that helps it follow the contours of your skin.
Shavettes have their advantages, they are cheaper, require less maintainance and once you master it you will have no problems with a real straight razor - but definitely not the way to go if you want to start off easy.

As much as I would love to pick up a straight, I have to be completely honest with myself whenever I start thinking about it. I won’t use it often enough to become proficient with the upkeep. Like you, I have kids. At best I’ll use my shavette when they’re in bed. I appreciate that you didn’t romance it and try to push the sale.

The grind looks closer to a wedge than a hollow grind compared to the German/French razors. But I guess that matters less on a 7/8 where its much easier to get the thinness and angle on the cutting edge.
However you are still losing the flex.

  • @JohnHartConductor

Nice work, Matt, especially for being a bit out of practice. It’s like any skill - don’t use it and it will atrophy. My #1 tip is: don’t straight razor shave with a jumpy dog in the room, or you’ll certainly give yourself a nice little “memory line.”
