Hearing Charlie tell Jacob "don't use all your tricks at once" is a bit funny, considering Jacob doesn't really hold back in this regard at all.. love both their music but Charlie definitely goes for that "pop sensibility" whereas I think Jacob mostly makes music for himself
If you think that Jacob has tricks on all sorts of instruments, is pretty much not using all his tricks at once! xD But i get you mean, and I agree with you... Jacob seems to have fun with his things and don't hoooooooooooooold it back
Jacob does hold back, it's just that his palette is so ungodly large that he still sounds extra even when doing so 😂😂 I adore Jacob Collier but have to be in the mood for him - Charlie Puth on the otherhand I can listen to any time or day
I think these two should literally do this banter all the time as a regular weekly show!! I would watch it for hours. :) Thanks for putting this together.
Bro, you are a blessing, thank you!! i can manage to watch just a couple of my favorites artist in twitch and just for a couple of minutes, this is pure gold getting all these tips from artist that i dont listen but that are masters in they craft. btw: i would like to see in the channel more philosophical or non "technical" tips like ed obrian do in his instagram. cheers!
@@SolStateMusic ofcourse! If at all possible, if you're able to make another video anything relating to Charlie Puth, that would be amazing.. Cheers! Keep up the amazing work ⭐
Lol, this is mainly entertainment but I enjoyed it. In music composition, what Charlie is talking about is called "text painting". Making the music sound descriptively like what is being sung.
"Charlie Puth and Jacob Collier, who can only be addressed in youtube video titles if their names are followed by the qualifier 'Musical Genius(es)'" proceed to *play chords*.
They talking about recording stuff with phones and sounding great... If I attempt something like that it will sound like hot garbage... They're just on another level, man...
Man, don't be foolish. Voice notes, was mixed by Manny Marroquin. Charlie recorded some stuff, and maybe did a roughmix for Manny. They are very knowledgeable musicians, but they are not good engineers, and their stuff will sound ok (sound wise) without the work of other professionals.
@@jaimesedano1141 okay, we all know there are more people involved in the process of their music/albums. But this doesn’t make them less talented and very smart musicians. You might think that they’d sound just okay but there’d be the same innovations that came from their minds.
Music nerds not geniuses. Not a diss. Until the discographies stand with the best of all time they can't carry that title based on just having the best skillset.
@@Wurldz I've actually listened to Voice Memos waaaay more than anything Jacob's done, because I like pop music and because the mix sounds incredible - Manny Marroquin on that, I believe. His output isn't genius though, it's just really good, on that album. He's an okay player, decent writer and a really good producer. His commercial appeal and looks just make him appear like this novel wunderkind, but I personally know people making better music, it's not uncommon. It wasn't uncommon in the 70's and 80's either. I'm not sure what your background is, but any good jazz musician might sound like a genius talking about music theory when standing in the modern pop world!
@@Wurldz I didn't know that Puth did the UA-cam thing, so I'd be interested to see some of those clips when they reemerge. He went through Berklee, so he simply has to have skills on the other side of that. But that's mostly what I hear when listening to him, just skills. And resources a record company can provide. My first exposure to him was that song 'Long day, without you my friend' which I reallllly can't stand, and you still hear stuff like 'begging please, on my knees' or 'I'd die for you, lie for you, cry for you' in his songs...I mean, that stuff was cliche even in the 60s...but I have respect for him as someone trying to bring musicality back to the public square. He's just not up there with Jake Sherman or Devin Morrisson, who are REALLY great producers or players, and songwriters without any of those resources. Jacob on the other hand...I honestly think he's one of the greatest musical geniuses to ever walk the earth. Easily. The things he can do are unbelievable. And maybe similar to you I've made it through only one of his albums start to finish...I like his wonderful, impossible existence more than his output I guess. Totally with you about his character, I think that's probably fully half of his secret to success. He is so incredibly positive and likeable, charismatic, like you said. It was frustrating for many years to see this mind-boggling dude be largely an unknown, even despite his prodigious media-savvy, but all his efforts of collaboration etc have finally paid off for him and now people are aware of his genius, and it seems vogue to consider musical complexity again. Those are all good things in my book
No geniuses to be seen here also it’s pretty insulting to real people who are worthy of that title like Herbie, secondly how dare you pitch Charlie Puth as a genius? His music is so generic lacking any individuality.
Yes because he chooses to make that type of music, but when he applies his extensive music knowledge it can sound AMAZING listen to his song BOY and tell me thats generic
@@Eraeraeric I’m in my masters program for music sir I’m not pulling this out of thin air. He doesn’t even know an undergraduate amount of musical theory or knowledge so idk what context or source you are using to grade his knowledge. He makes that music cause it what he can make he can’t do any other genre.
@@Eraeraeric also out of lack of ignorance I indeed did listen to Boy and it’s incredibly a poster child of generic music. It sounds like a just ok taylor swift song from 2010. I hope you don’t misunderstand this music isn’t bad it’s just not to the level that is mentioned here and there are people that appreciate his music and that’s ok. But when the word genius is thrown around so recklessly it can do damage because it skews the public understanding of music which leads to the public having poor understanding and taste and pushing this bad taste pállate onto artists and bad appreciation for the truly gifted and blessed geniuses in the craft of music. In pop music the geniuses are like Patrice Rushen, Stevie wonder, Michael Jackson, Amanda Barise, thundercat, Sarah Ikumo

Good point. Jacob's pop-sensible is a complete 180 from Charlie's "pop-sensible" global hits. That's kinda the beauty tho.

Largest mistake in this video is the "vs", the whole video is 2 gifted friends talking about music and relating.
yeah
be the human chord
That’s so beautiful
five dollar foot longgggg...genius
idk but i was smiling too like i was also the part of this conversation
hey whats the song that charlie is playing?!
That Charlie Puth album is amazing. Hilarious that he set up his speakers wrong.

Charlie Puth is really good, but he's not a genius. He just stands out because he's an actual musician. Jacob, well....a genius without peer
