Just imagine how intimidating this would be as part of a large army moving into an area, getting ready for an attack, or just hearing this in the middle of a dark forest at night. Especially those deep bass tones en mass would make the ground tremble. You'd probably feel that in your stomach and bones even from a good distance. The Gauls and Germans were able to field armies of hundreds of thousands if the Roman sources are to be believed. With numbers like that a few thousand of these instruments would not be unthinkable. Maybe combined with hundreds of big kettle-drums and the screaming and pounding of thousands upon thousands of men.. Must have been unlike anything else.
I was born near one of the places where the Lur was found in the 1800s, they are a big part of the local identity and that is why our summerfest is called Lurfest. There is an orkester that plays the Lur there too
Thank you for the great video and example! I couldn't have asked for a better display of the range and attributes of this instrument, this is exactly what I was looking for. The accompanying collage of the instrument being made is particularly wonderful.
I checked the channel yesterday for uploads, and this pops up today. Lucky! That's an interesting instrument. At first glance it reminds me of some sort of hybrid euphonium/didgeridoo, especially with the multiphonics at the end.
Except it sounds completely different. And it is played differently. And building a traditional Lur requires skill in bronze metallurgy, whereas a didgeridoo is just a eucalyptus trunk, hollowed out by termites.
I am a Lur from iran . In iran Lur is the original people of iran and we also use sucha singing device in our traditions and weddings . We call that damli dambo .well we dont call that dambli dambo 😁 But we do choob bazi means we beat each other we wood in one another back of the foot . Now go get a life

The fact that you fashioned this instrument yourself is very inspiring .

That's got some beautiful echo to it, probably could hear it a few miles away.
Beautiful craftsmanship Thomas, guided all the way by your Ancestors. You guys are going to do great things.
At best it suits the rest of the music you make.
At worst; you have one of the most beautiful elk and moose callers I've ever seen. :P

Lol yeah the lur is like a much more sophisticated instrument. You can play it like a trumpet.
@@Kai_Peters Lur is much superior to the piece of wood didgeridoo

I would love to know where to buy one of these
I don't think you can buy one unless it's special made, try to ask "Lurendrejerlauget Udi Brørup" from where they got theirs
Is this played similar to what a trumpet or bugle would be played? Are all note changes done with the lips?
Yes. Lips and preassure :)
Thats amazing. I imagine its quite a task to hold a constant note for an extended bar.
