In Sting's own words, his most "maligned and misunderstood album." His most brilliant album. Pure genius. The themes of the sea and loss and grief running throughout the album are so powerful.
I hear you mate, but this was the album that made the 'The Last Ship' theater performance all around the world, even here in Finland. For me this is perhaps the greatest album ever, but underrated, never :)
Brilliant album. Got me through the last yr of HS & 1st yr of the navy. That yr, I actually won a "Soul Cages: Live" VHS off a radio show quiz I'd just learnt the answer to 1hr prior; IKYN ;-)
I adore this song--the mythic poetry, the hard-driving rock that feels very Police-like, Sting's thicker-than-usual Geordie accent during what sounds like a folktale.... But what gets me, what really hits me hard, is the end, where he reprises the chorus from "Island of Souls," bringing this father-son tale full circle and letting Billy save his father, if only in his heart's dreams. I lost my mother only a couple of years before Sting lost his parents in quick succession, and I always identified strongly with the grief/broken relationship themes both "Nothing Like the Sun" and "Soul Cages." And when I hear the music in this call back to "Island of Souls," I never fail to tear up. It's positively cathartic. Sorry to go on, it's just... I love Sting as artist and a writer so skillful at communicating insight and emotion.
Dominic Miller at full display. He’s performance is nothing short of spectacular. And the song, out of this world or another day at the office for sting
To add to this commentary on bridges (or middle 8s as Macca might call them), the best bridges do two things: come out of nowhere (even though you know they’re coming structure wise) and also fit perfectly into the landscape of the song. Much like a road bridge does.
Christopher Cole In musical theory, do you know what’s he’s doing here in the bridge, I’ve always loved it, I know some music theory but I can’t explain what happens here ...
The Soul Cages is an amazing album, which kept me company in a very challenging period of my life. I was 17 when it was released, and very confused, and one of the (few) anchors of my life was music like this. Thank you
Christians often refer to John 3:16.Well, listen to the interlude at 4:16 and starting spreading the gospel; the most beautiful section of pop music ever composed. It gets me every time, 30 years since I first heard it. Simply sublime. What a song, what musicianship on display.
In the early 90s I was a young heavy metal fan, but 80s radio exposure led to my fondness of Tears for Fears, The Police, etc. The Soul Cages somehow landed in my cassette collection, I became fascinated with the poetry and musical textures. Fast forward a few years and my father, whose alcoholism prevented us from having a functional relationship, passed from a long and painful experience with cancer. I say 'experience' because I don't think he put energy into fighting it. Fast forward many more years, as a father myself, this album now has more relevance than ever. I not only mourn my own father, but I mourn myself for my sons and what they'll experience once I'm gone. Like a lightning bolt striking my core: And he dreamed of the ship on the sea It would carry his father and he To a place they could never be found To a place far away from this town A Newcastle ship without coals They would sail to the island of souls
Sting is an talented musician, composer, singer, arranger,he has conquered the music world by storm as a member of one of my favorite rock bands the police &as a solo artist!🎹🎸🎷🎤🎼
La musica del maestro Sting es un bálsamo emocional en tiempos dificiles para mi, limpian y armonizan mis entornos y mi alma gracias una vez mas Sting❤
Soul cages was the first CD I bought as a teenager and to this day it’s one of my favorite albums. I could listen to it all day long (and I did…). Love "When the angels fall" from this album too
Just heard Sting and Dominic Miller interviewed by Rick Beato and when Rick asked them what Sting album was their favorite, they both said Soul Cages. Says a lot. My fave too and whenever i listen to it again it never fails to be great.
This song is so emotional and wonderful... Sting is my favourite singer, and this album really helped me to survive the sudden death of my father... It fills my eyes with tears but somehow I can feel piece in the part of the song where he sings: "And he dreamed of the ship on the sea That will carry his father and he To the place they could never be found, to the place far away from this town... A Newcastle ship without coals, they will sale to the island of souls..." ❤
I saw this concert on first night, Berkeley Community Center. I paid a high school punk $150 for 2 tickets.sting played most of the Soul Cages album. And hits.
Grazie di cuore caro Sting per condividere questa bellissima canzone stupendamente interpretata 👍🎶🎻 Fantastico videoclip 🎶🎻🙆 Complimenti e applausi!!⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This album was one of the most emotionally gut wrenching things to listen to on the heels of a broken relationship or death of a loved one. I love the spaciousness the guitar (just noticed his strat has a floyd lol) adds and Stings' punchy bass lines are tops. Such an influential album on my youth and development as a musician.
Mr Sting has given us many magical albums. In my opinion "The soul cages" is his best work to this day. Thanx for uploading this magnificent track in this quality Sting.

STING YOU ARE A BEAUTIFUL STORY TELLER AND A WONDERFUL HUMAN BEING GOD BLESS YOU AND MAY YOUR MUSICAL CAREER BE REMEMBERED FOR AS LONG AS LIFE IS AROUND
Happy 30 for this beautiful album!. for me it has a very special meaning since my father passed away months later after it was released..i came to understand and shared what was the feeling behind the whole record...besides personal reasons also it's the first album with our Dominic Miller (i'm from Argentina) and it's a great proud for us that he was in the best band that Sting has assembled
In Sting's own words, his most "maligned and misunderstood album." His most brilliant album. Pure genius. The themes of the sea and loss and grief running throughout the album are so powerful.
One of Sting's most under-rated songs, and album. "The Soul Cages" was pure emotion.
I believe So too!
It’s his most emotional album. Also, That’s why all the songs on it have a solid collective quality to it. They just belong together
I love this album... No word can describe how I feel when I hear it

Can we take a minute to acknowledge Dominic Millers crushing electric rhythm guitar work on this song? Those fills are super tight.
Indeed!
chissa perche non si vede mai il suo volto..
We certainly can. He's the MVP of that album.
Song is a masterpiece
I love the guitar playing on this song.
His best solo-album in my opinion.
Credit to Dominic Miller on guitar, absolutely awesome.
He never looked at the camera though and its very notorious i found it so weird. The drummer's face is shown but not Dom

Wonderfully articulated. Thank you.
Keen insight
The song's about 80s Britain. The Thatcher era.
No apologies needed. Good to hear your losses are (somewhat) softened by lyrics and muse.
That Island of Souls reprise in this tune really gets me too.
It's Sting, it's Sting 💚
This album has such a great mood, unlike any other in the world. I love this maybe even more than the other Sting albums.
Huge respect to a guy who came from literally nothing and brings everything
One of his absolute best efforts. The Storyteller through song... Sting is legend and icon
ABSOLUTE FACTS my dear
Soul cages is my personal favourite. It’s About dealing with grief and acceptance. Very difficult and impossibble. This album is my comfort.
@JB K Sting The Soul Cages is one of my personal favorite song
The sexiest oboe solo in history!!
Dominic Miller at full display. He’s performance is nothing short of spectacular. And the song, out of this world or another day at the office for sting
The band with him is incredible he always has played with impeccable musicians
Sting deserves the Nobel Prize of Literature just like Bob Dylan. Or at least the Pullitzer, his writing is insanely good.
Agree, he also might be the best bridge writer ever! (Every Breath, All This Time, Seven Days, King of Pain, This, etc. all have fantastic bridges).
@@seantube21 Indeed. Bridges are highly underrated.
Other great bridges he has are (wrapped around your finger, every little thing she does is magic)

Sting: Bass and Vocals
Dominic Miller: Guitar

I’m 16 and listening to this instead of mainstream shit. The old stuff is way more beautiful and real than it is right now. Pure emotions
I've been listening to this song for years but it never fails to mesmerize me. You're a legend, Sting
I'm listening to Sting The Soul Cages mid October 2021
I’m listening to this album during my 5 hours drive home from seeing him on the concert. May 2022.
The Soul Cages is a favorite album, too.
One of his deepest songs. Brilliant.
This album is a masterpiece 🔝
Yes it is!
@@writetovagelis1975 I agree!
IMO, it's his best album. I don't listen to it much, though, because I always am emotionally devastated by it. BRILLIANT album.
His best album and his least favorite. Go figure.
What a “Timeless” song!
Still sounds fantastic in 2022
I’m listening to Sting The Soul Cages early December 2022
Why do we don't have such compositions and music anymore. Feels like my soul will remain old school and never get old of this music ❤️

Saw an interview where STING says this is his best performance. This song and album he is most proud of. The album is fantastic.
Emotional and most personal album. So so underrated, unfortunately
A great pity--Sting is indeed a masterful storyteller--his imagery is second to none!
Its totally true.
The soul cages in one of the greatest rock / pop albums. Period.
Sting was in a recent interview where he said this is the album which made the most impact on him- and a small but fervent group of fans.

This was his first album after our father died - it had/has quite the impact on me.
Both his parents died that same year. He says many people see this as a song for periods of bereavement, as it was for him.
