That pub was built in 1972...( we used to break in and shoot the nail guns at each other,) it took a year to build as it was BIG. It was two storied with a bottle shop underneath at thew back and a sports bar and lounge bar. The public bar was basically the Stormies (Stormtroopers ) bar.... The Hells Angels incident was dealt with by the original Stormies who faded away until late 1970s when Stormies were suddenly started up again, due to Black Power (Abe Wharewaka) starting to move in to Otara with 1978 Hui at Ngati Otara, now Scorpions clubhouse (400 BP members from around NZ) ...and was attacked/ambushed by about 500 younger guys from Otara who gathered at Hilary College without being noticed!! Oct 1978 was when a few new different Stormies patches started appearing. I was a pakeha from Otara and drank at the ET (Flying Jug ) ...it always helped to be a fast runner though lol 😎😋
70 now, I was about 15 when it was built and that was early 70s. I was doing an engineering apprentiship with Hunterline Industries which then became the Great Outdoor Company. Learning to drink and socialise at that young age, I did enjoy the "Flying Jug" although I got into trouble one time for finding a young Maori girl attractive and taking her to the dance floor.. Returning to sit with her at her table, I was getting a bit of flack from a guy I believed was her 'cousin'. He eventually jumped across the table at me and we ended up rolling around the place a bit before getting kicked out by security. I went back a couple of times but never did see that cute little lady again. After that my haunt became the Ol Duke at Mt Wellington where the Maori Hi Marks played on a Wednesday night. Loved their music. The good ol days a. Managed to survive driving home drunk those days.
Been there Awesome brother 👍 no jugs came my 😂 🎸🥁🪘🎷🎻🎤🎹👏 60 / 70 best times ever . Still have my class jugs.🤘. Now solo musician busker . Now 64 . Love life ❤🫒
I remember early 2000s as a kid we played as flying jugs as a touch team I never understood where the name came from until the oldies mentioned the pub .
I can honestly respect the acknowledgement of thee "THE FLYING JUG".My dad and uncles were/are Stormtroopers from that era and I have alot of stories to go with that aswell.Respect for telling the story tho💯❤
Once were warrior taverns- Those pubs don't exist anymore but I believe there were lots of those pubs back in the 80's and before the 80's. I was told Bottle Crates of Beer were so cheap and affordable for unemployed. My father use to drink in the Palace tavern and the Fenton in Rotorua back in the early 80''s I was only 7yo but I went in the pub once looking for my Dad and it looked exactly like the pubs I saw on Once were warriors- really rough looking like a pub full of gang members
Our flying jug in Wellington was the Tramways hotel. Pusa Finau called 10.00 o'clock pub closed. And someone threw a jug at the clock. Not sure if it was true but always remember Pusa calling closing. Best pub ever.
@@BIZ-274 Lol my boss sort of tricked me into working there but it was my own fault as I was unfamiliar with the suburbs in Auckland coming from the Bay of Plenty . I had been working at our main Buyrite Liquor store on the Mt Wellington and Panmure Highway and they told me that they wanted to offer me a promotion to be the Assistant Manager, more money @ our new location that had been built semi recently in "East Tamaki" I was so stoked until my 1st day starting at the new location which to my very genuine surprise turned out to be Otara haha
Also had a lounge bar which was big and well attended by those who didnt want to drink in Public bar....the sports bar was attached to at back/rear of public bar. The ET pub took up all of that ground, with heaps of car parking...it went from Ally way next to houses to East Tamaki primary school boundary.👍
Used to work at power board southern area across the road from there the whole depot used to go down there to drink on pay day place used to be packed out with power board workers lots of good memories lots of good people
I lived just down the road from the ET pub (just after it was built) and me and mate 12-13yrs old had a little old radio hidden in tree by fence, with an electrical wire through my bedroom window attached to an old microphone...when the drunks would come past we would yell at them 'bleep bleep etc' and laugh at them staunching up and looking for someone who was not there!! We once managed to start a huge roller machine and couldnt stop it.... as it slowly rolled over neighbours fences at back of construction of the Flying Jug , i was still trying to stop it when a man came running over and jumped on to stop it before it hit the houses!!! ( of course i pointed and blamed the other kids running away gulp 😵💫)
😎bro sum of us grew up their "the flying jug" i watched it get built all of us that drank there were not only troopers n tribies but the "THUNDA CATS" the Cecils Motu n Punoa tuff fullas taught how to fly out the door😆✌️

@@BIZ-274 Stormies never really had a problem with BP's just that they wanted to take over Otara...when they had Panmure, Mt Wellington, Otahuhu which was the cause of all the historical beef. Abe wanted the Factory established.
