  • Conflict on Camera - Alexander Braun joins us to talk about a photo taken in June 1944 of a German surrender in Cherbourg. But, what is the full story, who are the German officers in the photo and where was it taken? We also talk about No. 30 Commando who were part of the Cherbourg attacking force liberating Villa Meurice - the German Naval Intelligence HQ.
Alexander Braun and Sean Claxton offer interactive, virtual guided tours of Normandy via ZOOM.

The British 30AU Commando was the same intelligence gathering commando unit that landed at Dieppe in August 1942. It can be assumed that it was intelligence that 30AU was after.

Cherbourg was very important, but it was late july or Aug before port was operational after the 6 Jun landings. Cherbourg was a historic port long before WW2, it was one of the ports the RMS Titanic stopped in on its 10 Apr 1912 steaming for New York. Thanks for bringing this photo to light, Woody.

Great analysis. I didn’t know about the 82nd capturing the German artillery tractors.
The American officer behind the general at 16:34 is wearing two pistol magazine pouches instead of the usual one. This arrangement is almost never seen. Guess he was prepared for the worst ...

Thanks for this, my uncle, Virgil Fisk was killed July 9th 44 near saint lo . As near as I can figure probably fighting in this kind of territory. He was 22 years old.
