    I totally understand. I had worked am finally got a recipe that I loved. Had a friend who also made soap and they wanted my recipe. I gave it to them. After a long time I moved and stop making soap for awhile. When I went back to marking soap I could not find my recipe. So I remember giving it to this person and asked if they could send me a copy of it. They told me know! And to work at making one like it. I was shocked I gave them the recipe and they are still using it and selling the soap. . Mean is not the only word I could use for some people.

    You are on target 🎯 Some of the officious 'experts' are really just experienced groupies who have read and memorized but not actually had years of experience. Then there's the ones who are obnoxiously proprietary.... But that's a while 'nother rant 😉 Oh, and for the record, yes you can make shave soap via cold process 🤣

    I've found most people who jump down other people's throats are WRONG! These people in general aren't very knowledgeable. They just like to be heard. I don't do forums or groups, in general they suck! I do my own formulating. I have many friends on UA-cam, if I were ever to need help (doubtful) I can ask them.
    I live your channel, because your funny and honest, lol!

    In a soap making subreddit people were so defensive and rude about soap and the way they felt was the best way to make it. For many people its for personal use and a hobby, so to each their own!! Great video Uncle Jon! 'Dont be a Jerk!' should be a life motto for some people!

    When people jump at newbs like that, i always read it as a sense of powerlessness in life (think- the teacher in Pink Floyds The Wall). It's common in fishing forums, too.

    Great video! I will never be embarrassed or intimidated by others for my ignorance. Ignorance is not knowing ... not stupidity. I learn from everybody. After 42 years blowing glass, I can still learn from an apprentice. He/she may have stumbled on a technique I haven't seen or tried myself. Any skilled endeavor will have the same dynamic. I make soap for my own use and for gifts. I was running out so I made a batch about 7 weeks ago. It didn't act like I thought it should two days after cutting ... it was a bit crumbly. So instead of assuming it was bad, I let it cure and now it's one of the most effective batches I've ever made. I will definitely use the same recipe again, but next time I will use a mixer and pay more attention to the water discounting. Thanks, Jon!!

    The first question I ever asked in a soap making group was answered, but the person answering me made sure to add in an argumentative/aggressive/unnecessary comment. I just told them thank you and never posted again, no time for that drama in my life. It makes me sad though because there's so much we can learn from each other, but I wonder how many other people gave up because they felt attacked by the group they look up to.

    I had a similar experience when I tried to answer a newbie’s question about castor oil. I was the lone voice saying you actually CAN use more than 5% in your cp soap. I even went so far as to explain how to mitigate the stickiness. My formula uses 15% and works well every time. It took me a few years to get it just right with that high of a percentage and I was willing to share my experience. I got blasted by a couple know-it-alls for days. That was the first social media group I left. I have since left them all because, quite honestly, I don’t have time for people like that. I just feel bad for the newbies left behind with them. Thanks for another great video!

      OMG I has seen so many know-it-alls who liked the blast people for their castor oil percentage rate. It is completely nuts. It isnt their soap, I don't understand why they are so opinionated about it.

    EXACTLY! It drives me crazy when I see this type of behavior in groups. Im like this poor person just asked a question or for help and now everyone wants to jump down their throat or just talk about how they do things assuming it can't possibly be done any other way, and sometimes they DON'T even answer the actual question. That's not helpful. Just shut up if you're not going to actually answer the question. We don't need to know all about how educated you think you are because you've been making soap for however long. There's usually more ways than one to skin a cat anyhow. Sheesh.

    I saw her question.. I do make all organic soap with Additives in question I also add a Preservative To support those additives.. I also make tallow soap That my grandmother taught me how to make when I was a child.. and I make it like you're describing in your shave soap.. Like you I do not Use "the soap guide book"... I do things Willie Neely and see what works.. Because if you don't.. how are we gonna learn.. I was making really pretty soap and that was sitting on my shelf when I started making simple soaps those were selling like crazy with the same fragrances Or essential oils.. For the longest time I thought that my that my bars didn't didn't smell good.. I had a customer tell me about 2 weeks ago that my new bars are more appealing than the older ones... I have been making cold process soap is soap for 6 years.. Love your channel keep up the honest work..

    This is great advise.. I remember when I first started soaping I had some questions I ran into some mean people.. and actually YOU John helped me the most! You answered my questions and were so very kind..
    these “Susan’s”;are in every type of group. I am Vegan and when I first transitioned from meat and dairy to all plant based, I joined a few FB groups to learn because this way of eating was completely new to me.. I learned a lot.. one day I had made the best vegan sandwich it looked picture perfect, it tasted amazing.. I posted a pic of it on this one Vegan FB page and OMG! The vipers were let loose on me. I was told my sandwich looked like vomit, the most disgusting thing they ever saw.. why? Because I used bread that I didn’t make myself and I used a vegan cheese that I didn’t make myself.. WTH!! It was all vegan but these “Susan’s” came straight from hell.. I thought I was doing vegan wrong… I wasn’t, they were just assholes… I left all the vegan pages and figured it out myself.. now if I didn’t have skin as tough as armor, I may have crawled in a hole and cried my eyes out and gave up on being vegan, I didn’t.. I said screw you bitches and moved on.. I like to think that Karma will work things out with those “keyboard bullies”
    They are out there in every platform.. I say if you don’t have thick skin, don’t ask questions and never post unless your ready for the asshole hammer to drop on you.
    Anyway, thanks for this video, I know it will help viewers.. Also thank you for your help when I started soaping, like I said above, you were so kind to me and helped with my questions,,, thank you!
    AND thanks for changing the Karen to Susan.. it’s much better fitting..,

    See the same thing in my leather crafting groups, like every day. Lots of older crafters stuck in their ways, lots of new crafters who probably shouldn't be giving advice on most of the topics, and then the trolls. You see a lot of potentially awesome ideas just get abandoned because these mean or condescending people just crap all over peoples' ideas.

    I had a similar experience in a soaping fb group. I’m brand new to soaping and had posted about making a pine tar soap (as my first soap) I was fully aware of it being a difficult soap. But I like to challenge myself. The first person to comment tried to make me feel like a new soaper was incapable of making something so difficult and had no business even trying. Thankfully I’m not a person that gets crushed by comments like that. I did respond and called them on it. Respectfully of course 🙄
    And then went about the task of actually making the soap. It wasn’t pretty. But i did it and it was soap. And I learned some things. I also made a post in that same group with pictures of the soap, my recipe, my process, and what I learned from it all. That person never commented. But I did get plenty of encouragement, critique, and constructive criticism from other members.

There was a cricket chirping moment in an old video of yours with a nugget of knowledge about pure coconut oil soap is the only one to lather in sea water. I know exactly what you are talking about. I saw a lady tell a beginner who was experimenting the other day she would sue her if she sold her flowers in soap because she has an allergy to mold and they mold. Not enough to just tell her they mold, she took it so personally. I am also allergic to mold and laughed. While that would’ve been fine for her to let her know, her and the entire comments section then took it upon themselves to bully her out of the group. It is people like that who make hobbies so toxic and it’s actually why I don’t even offer my help to most people anymore, if I do, I do so privately so they don’t feel judged by THOSE kinds of people asking questions. Of course I don’t know everything about everything, but I can answer a lot of beginner type questions. There’s so many of them who want to say something nasty so bad it’s like a compulsion and they need one person to make it seem okay and to validate them all continuing to do it. I so appreciate the many UA-cam makers who I’ve learned many skills from, like yourself, who don’t bring that kind of energy into the room. I think what it’s really about is they are afraid of the competition because they have no real faith in their skills, what they sell or anything that sets them apart in the market, so they have to tear others who might down before they even start. There are some really nasty, nasty people who hide under the guise of proper procedures and education.

    Some people just cannot handle being wrong. Or the idea that maybe they don't know everything. Also, when you are stepping outside the norm to present a new idea, there will always be people who reject it. Just blow them off. Sadly, some people are narcissists, straight up. They feel no empathy. Don't care if they hurt others, never did, never will. So you just have to cut them off and move on.

    I don’t make actually shaving soap but I shave with my cold process soap. So do a lot of my customers and my daughter does n my sons do also. It’s my regular recipe. I never really thought about it cause it’s just what I’ve done for 6 years. I only do cold process soap. I don’t market it for shaving but it’s all we use n most of my customers as well. But some people also think that u must take ur temperatures of ur lye n ur oils and they have to be within so many degrees of each other. And that’s when what u just said come into play. U see someone doing a heat transfer method and they have a stroke . And they obviously don’t know and they obviously are only repeating what they have heard other soap makers say. If they did there research they would know about the heat transfer method and ur temperatures are not important because u can’t get a bigger temperature difference then doing the heat transfer method. Ur pouring hot fresh lye over unmelted solid oils and butters. But these ppl w have a stroke. And they all repeat the same thing “ ur going to have lye heavy soap and ur temperatures need to be within 15 degrees of each other!” No they don’t. Some ppl will go crazy seeing someone make soap if it’s u see 80° F. N that’s ridiculous cause I master batch my oils n butters, I freeze the water and when I’m getting ready to make soap I grab a bucket full of my oils n butters I hit it w the mixer and I put the lye over my ice dissolve it and pour my lye in. Some people don’t know that u can do a 50% water discount as long as u have equal parts of water n lye or a few ounces more of the water then the lye. I’m a researcher. I did research for almost a year before I made one batch of soap. Ppl need to relax. It’s soap , it’s not that deep! It’s only soap and if ur taking it to that level then either u need some help or u have to find another hobby. I would think that if u wanna grow what u do learning how others do things is to ur benefit. Cause it can inspire u to come up with something fantastic! And maybe there is an easier way of doing something. Maybe u can learn something from someone who has experience or maybe a more experienced person who’s set in there ways might learn something fantastic from the new generation of soap maker’s. I think criticism is a good thing. I would rather someone say to me “ that works like shit” as opposed to them lying and me selling it and now the public thinks ur products are shit lol. But u can give criticism without being a hurtful moron. N u know ppl are going to talk bad about u from the moment ur born till u die. U can’t beat up the world ! Don’t try. As long as u like urself and what u do then fuckem to be totally blunt! What other ppl think about u is none of ur business! And it doesn’t matter what ppl call u , it only matters what u answer to. U can’t let other people upset u. It’s not worth it. But if u wanna get a great response from soap maker’s go on private Facebook pages of UA-camrs. Cause if u pull that shit they will block that person. Ppl share there soap’s and designs and ideas and give advice to each other all the time. Jenn from BeScented is a great Facebook page. And Jerika from Quench. They don’t allow that nasty stuff to go on. And ppl share and give each other ideas and encourage each other. I was going to go on Keeley’s Facebook page. She owns Soy n Shea. These ladies are really helpful it’s a great community on their. I love it. That was so kind of u to stick up for ppl who are being bullied. Very cool!

I had questions about that kind of thing as well, but chose to keep quiet in that thread. I learned a lesson that day ... if I have questions I will talk to someone I know (or at least someone who's opinion I value from Facebook or UA-cam) and ask them. I keep swearing I’m going to figure a way to not do dual lye for shave soap 😂 I’ve made some amazing shave soaps but phew that stearic acid made me squish it into a mould and it got HOT. I’ll definitely let ya know if it happens just so you can pffft those people too with me 🤣

    Something else to think about when thinking about the subject at hand. Generally speaking "smart people" know it is pointless to argue with not so smart people because no matter what they will not change their mind on anything even if proven wrong. I think the lack of not being challenged much and (in their eyes) never being proven wrong when challenged adds to the way some people act.

    I have a question I'm hoping you could help me with. I want to make the pink fight club soap. I do cold process mold pour. I was wondering is mica an effective way to color a whole batch? I've only ever used it for topical aesthic.

    • @unclejonssoap
      @unclejonssoap  3 роки тому +1

      Honestly, I'm not sure mica would do it. A soap dye would be better suited for that.

      @@unclejonssoap hey, thanks. I appreciate your response. I tired a batch today and the color faded drastically after setting a number of hours.

    Hi Jon's, I am struggling to sought out soap sweating. Please guide me how to get rid of it.

    • @unclejonssoap
      @unclejonssoap  2 роки тому +1

      It could be for a few different reasons. Some just sweat while curing. But some will also sweat when the weather changes due to the natural glycerine content.

    Also I tell people only rules in soap making is you need oils, lye, no less than a 1:1 ratio for the lye solution (for body soaps and without citric etc) other than that....experiment!

    New subscriber, and aspiring soap maker. While I’d love to be successful at making and selling soap, I’ve always got a few side hustles going, I’m just hoping to keep all of my friends and family clean. I have a few dairy goats, and have made a few batches of the ugliest goat milk soaps you’ll ever see.
    Somehow stumbled across your channel today, and enjoyed watching several of your videos. Btw, your yelling at the beginning of the video scared the bejeezus out of my dogs. The cats still hiding somewhere 😆
    Anyways, you probably won’t see this, but wanted to say I really enjoy your videos. I love your no nonsense, direct and to the point style. I can’t really take much of the super sweet soapers. The overly bubbly (pun intended) people kinda grate on my nerves. Keep doin what you’re doin!
