Idk it might be me interpreting it in a weird way, but this song resonates to me in a way where pregnancy is seen as something haunting.
TW: mentions of ab*rtion and a trigger warning to those who have tokophobia ( The fear of pregnancy and childbirth)
“ We dissolve everything, scratch their follicles so they don’t grow” follicles are on the ovary where a mature egg produces during ovulation, which can then travel to the Fallopian tubes to get fertilized by sperm, this could imply that by scratching the Graafian follicle, no eggs will produce therefore no pregnancy.
“ Bruise my embryo, lay them down lay them down in rows” could imply the harming of an embryo during the embryonic stage, or terminating of the fetus. Lay them down in rows could imply the deaths of said fetuses being laid down in rows to further conclude they are dead and no longer in the womb.
“ I’ll sleep for you for when you’re exhausted, your first born will be accosted “ can imply the embryo sleeping for the mother in order to gain a sense of mercy by providing her energy when she’s tired. The first born being accosted could imply that your “first born” will be approached aggressively due to the mother not wanting to have them in the first place, a sense of shaming.
“ Fill their lungs with tar and sage, make them stem cells act their age” now, smoking is absolutely not recommended during pregnancy, and Sage, when taken in large quantities, can cause a “natural miscarriage” due to a component in sage causing the uterus to contract. This implies that the mother wants the embryo gone from her body. The stem cells acting their age, I’m a bit unsure of that statement. Maybe it implies that the stem cells shouldn’t be childish? Childish implying a child present, therefore they shouldn’t be present to develop the baby???
“ Perfume in my blood” implies another dangerous method of injecting foreign substances into the bloodstream to “poison” the fetus or neglect it from proper nutrients. “Nails grow through the glove” implies frustration from the mother trying to get rid of the baby, therefore her nails scratch and tear through the glove of the uterus to attempt to prevent pregnancy, which could also tie in with the statement of “ scratch their follicles”
Even the sound of the actual song, the repeating of the drum??? Could represent the mother banging a surface in frustration, or even a more violent act of beating her abdomen to rid of the embryo. The scratchy synth contributes to the haunting feeling of pregnancy and how some women view it as an uncomfortable/horrifying experience.
I don’t know, it’s just an interpretation of what goes through my mind, a girl who has tokophobia. I even nicknamed this song, “ The Tokophobia Anthem” for myself, heheheh. Lemme know what you think !
