He might had shown great potentials as a Keeper. But as a batsman, he was not consistent at all. He used to fall cheaply for ducks or single digits throwing away his wicket on numerous occasions as an opener. Thus he was responsible for creating early pressure or a collapse in the Srilankan top order. Check out the archives and records. Only Wicket Keeping performance with inconsistent batting isn't enough to be sung as a hero!
@Raas Putin Coming in and making quick runs doesn't make it necessary that you will make the *habit of falling cheaply* for a 1st ball duck or single digit *anyhow throwing away your wicket* on *numerous occasions* and creating early pressure or a collapse in the top order!!!
@Raas Putin Try to remain within the boundary of modesty. You may have every right to love him blindly. But at the same time I have my right to express whatever I feel right according to my observations and logic. Many other pinch hitters existed and still exist in the Cricketing world who can make quick runs and at the same time, play more sensible cricket with consistency.
Not only he was a world class bowler, he traded "deals" with bowlers to make his life easier at the crease when he's batting, at least with Freddie Flintoff. Also Murali made a deal with Wasim Akram for "no bouncers"!..Both available on UA-cam if anyone cares to have a look..

Kalu's batting talent was wasted for pinch hitting. I think the inconsistency of his batting is not his fault and that is what he was asked to do as a team strategy of those days. We had such a strong batting line up even batsmen like Mahanama batted at No 07. So the duty of the players like Kalu was to go and smash every delivery without thinking about his wicket.

Ahhhh the 90s. Murali always came out batting with the widest smile possible and slogged without a care in the world.
A tip: watch series at InstaFlixxer. I've been using them for watching a lot of movies lately.
