Let me tell you... I had a guy in my local car audio shop make me a custom box for two JL 12's like these. It was for my 16' Altima. I didn't want a full box taking up my trunk, so he did me one a fourth of the size! Boy when I tell you these joints hit! It's like I have two 15's in a full size box!! My box has more space than needed, because it could have been done with way less. But because I did have trunk space, I told him to make it a little bigger. They hit!! For those that know & remember, the Miami Bass days!! DJ Magic Mike, Bass Patrol, Techmaster PEB, Two Live Crew of course, & many others! These babies can handle it all in a lot smaller space!!👊🏾💯
When I was 16 (I'm 41 now) I had a jacked up supercharged 1994 Eddie Bauer Explorer and I had a full Sony stereo system with a Sony 10-disc CD changer, MB Quart 5x7 split sets in the doors, for subs I had two JL 15s and two Kenwood 1200 watt amps. I could set a full Coke can on my roof and bounce it 10 feet in the air. I had the police called on me and I was trespassed from a Burger King in Florida because they said that I "bounced a set of tongs across the workstation" with my stereo in their parking lot. I have a BMW now and I only have a set of two Sundown Audio SA12-D2 subs, but they still sound good. Once a basshead, always a basshead!
My installer said that the rockford fosgate T1S1 series copied JL's TW3 because they had a certain patent laspe and during that laspe RF copied it. That's why they look the same.
I had an 8” Rockford I really liked in a box. On my new Cabrio I’ll consider JL as well. Rockford Fosgate has a self amped box I’m interested in. I need to conserve trunk space as well.

I ran 3 12W6 subs for years powered by Phoenix Gold white ZX amps for the better half of 10 years I also ran midbass and all my separates off the Phoenix Gold White ZX amps still having any found anything really comparable since. The head unit I had was a non-powered high volt eclipse head unit.
Pioneer came out with the shallow mount 2006-7 I believe they was one of the first or the first to make the shallow sub. I could be wrong but I remember they've had this sun since back then.
You could go over to skar and buy their best subwoofer for less than that. And it’ll blow any jl subwoofer out of the water. You could even get better and go with American bass. For that price and get something with 3x higher rms. JL is over priced garbage.
@@neilclark3243 The sub's enclosure and your amp's signal/type of music you play a much larger role in what a speaker can handle than most people realize. Also, many amps will push MUCH more than their rating would suggest if your gain is set too high. I sometimes wonder if some manufacturers RMS rating is based on a perfect 40hz sine wave in a sealed box, or just complete BS. One size fits all numbers just don't work for sub ratings. It's a very dynamic set of components and variables to keep in consideration.
I'm still bumping a Rockford HX2 15", that I found in a junkyard in 2001. Custom ported box, tuned to 33hz. Shit still bangs and sounds incredible. The JL W7 was JL's best sub, but from what we know nowadays about car audio, is you can make a Jensen 10" pound, but I think Sundown tasks the price to performance category. I would love to own a Rockford T1 some day.
I got a 13 W7. Had it since early 2000's .. the plus is you xan repair the foam if it tears or dry rots. I bought my speaker in the original box from a pawn shop over 20 years ago. Still bumping
I agree with you 110% All of my JL audio products, except for one amplifier, are still incredible pieces of equipment, and I have been buying them since 1998 I have 212 inch W3 V1. In a regular cab pick up truck with a 500 x 1 power them. It slams. I have their 2/12 Lockport box with 2W3 V2’s. Also powered by 500 x 1. Also slims. And I’m looking into getting two or 310 inch or 12 inch WOV twos. And possibly one of their nice six channel amplifiers.
I knew their was a huge reason I liked your channel. JL Audio all the way. My first set was JL 10 W3s in my Dodge Dakota & we had to get the skinny box & put 2 extenders on the box to make them fit. An I’ve loved them & been loyal ever since!🤘💪🔊

@mac4782 what is the record right now? I understand that they are great speakers. No denying that. But is that an amateur or a pro team? Pro teams essentially have an unlimited checkbook for teams. Check out the '94 championship when Doug Smith set the world record, beating all pro teams as an amateur. That could certainly happen and wouldn't necessarily require "Sundown Audio" it's all about budget, and for $1000, you could get more spl with other brands.
Whats even crazier is they require even less cu inch boxes than the standard subs do cu/w. I love mine. I remember my first thinkine sibs back in the early 2000s. I beleive they were Xtant or Infinity.
@@ROCKNROLLMODS you mean to comparable non thin line subs or its own? My 10" JLW3-D4 thin lines require less box space and only fall 200 watts short from the standard line. However it is the same frequency and only 1.8 db less. So they are quite efficient.
@yodaddy82daddy70 compared to conventional subs. TBH, I've never felt the need to use shallow drivers. I have built enclosures and fit standard 12s in standard cab trucks. Sure, it wouldn't be a cast basket competition style sub, but either are these. And for someone who's really serious about it (competition level), wouldn't be using these either. If they were "Team JL" they'd be using some mega gnarly 100lb subs. And if you're an amateur competitor and not independently wealthy, you are likely not using JL. Don't get me wrong, they're great! But 1 JL 12" sub doesn't hit like 3 of the competitors. And quality can be achieved in quantity as well. Any sub can easily produce high-quality bass at lower levels. And three of them at lower levels are like chocolate thunder for your soul.
@@ROCKNROLLMODS o I know there are much more potent subs for the bang. I'm not competing anymore. I have just two in my F150 under the back seats. I didn't want to get rid of my seats and build a customer enclosure or anything. I also like loud quality sound, not a db rattle trap. So JLs were the best for the dollar. When I used to compete back in the early 2000s I completed in the db drags than started competing in IASCA until newer products eventually made my system obsolete and I really couldn't compete. My original db SUV was a Ford Expedition. I was running four pairs of Diamond Audio 7" mids with 2" tweets and 8 10" W6 JLs running off 1,000W Xtants. It was fun as a 20 yr old but like you said I wasn't wealthy so couldn't compete as newer stuff came out.
I have Fi Neo 3.5 12-inch sub. Didn't have the money for a 12W7 let alone a 13W7 but, I still want subs with great sound quality and a lot of power. Love a sub that is the Goldilocks between a Sundown Nightshade and a JL W7. I love to have great sound quality but want it to be pretty loud, not so much that it necessitates ear-piercing super tweeters and pro audio mids.
Have a pair from the late 90’s….they still hit hard with a rockford amp of the same era….only thing i had to do was replace the surrounds a few years back because the originals finally deteiorated
Curious does that sub require the same air space as say the same JL speaker that’s not a small build frame? I’m still trying to put as much deep bass into my ‘63 impala w limited space for speakers.
10tw3 requires 0.519 cu ft compared to a 10w3 at 0.625 cu ft 12Tw3 is 0.80 cu ft compared to the 12w3 at 1.125 cu ft the main advantage is the shallow mount which allows for under or behind the seat installs.
flush mounts are my choice for higher bass. they aren't so good at long rolling bass but adding the texture that a big 8/12 can't is what they are really good for
Everybody wants 'em. No one can afford 'em. When I was in high school we were bumpin pyramid phase iii etc. Every now and then we'd end up with some lanzars, if we were lucky. Or if hifonics, if we were really lucky. There'd always be one dude like "I'm saving up for my system, cause everything except JL sucks." They'd be off to the oil refinery for the summer, working their arses off not getting no play from the hunnies. To come back to school the following year with their fabled JL system, only to get their B-ass's handed to them by the real-world audio guys. Always ended with closing the trunk in shame, never to throw their hats in the audio-gon again.
Man that's back in the good ole days, I had 2 lanzar vibe 1800 mono blocks pushing 4 12 inch AudioBahns, shit would out perform my buddies 2 JLs all day. There's quality products like that out there cheap nowadays but you gotta go foreign market for it
Yeah I understand what you are saying from back in the day no my preference was kicker and MTX they weren't cheap they were expensive but JBL took the win until the early 2000s Manteca came out with those solo X's a big ass solo x 18 it was a number one subwoofer to have butt it cost too much and also the L5 L6 do you have MTX with their 5500 series Austell 7500 series 8500 series in the big dog 9500 series and then King Kong the Jackhammer series my first system was a bazooka system no lie 2 tens in a vintage enclosure it was a bass package that they had during that time you also get them in 12s and 15s what's the amplifier Circuit City was selling thoes bass packages before they went out of business they also sold MTX and Alpine and kicker

I love JL too, I don’t mind paying for quality speaking on the fact you get what you pay for but even with the R&D I’d rather sacrifice my back pocket on an affordable quality setup.
Ill give you a Second option, Blam has a nice subwoofer too or Focal. The only thing is them 2 brands i mentioned are more expensive to someones taste, but they do perform really well.

I personally installed many and even their entry 3 way sounds amazing. Not much of a JL warranty fan, I was a deep JL Audio guy but after warranty issues I decided to stay away 😬. I would recommend their amps and the W7 subs all day and that TW3
First subwoofer was a 12W3. Their first version. I beat the crap out of that thing through 3 different vehicles between 1998 and 2014. Turned around and bought another in 2015. I push it with (dont laugh) a RF 40.2. What a combination!
But what people don't fail to realize is the quality of bass you getting out of jbl's is incredible this is how you can do a comparison now you know JBL make their own Bluetooth speakers now you have Sony that makes Bluetooth speakers and other companies no out of all those companies who's on some of the best bass wise was no Distortion of whatsoever JBL and no other sold for on the market can fuck with JBL I'm sorry I have to say it that's why they cost so damn much and I'm a MTX and kicker fan don't get me wrong but i halft to give it to jbl
The problem is, i know you can get a way higher powered sub for the price but a lot of people dont need that much wattage, it takes huge wiring and sometimes upgraded electrical, so for how much wattage jl's can take they sound super impressive and are very efficient.
Skar audio is prob one of the best right now when it comes to price like getting a good quality subwoofer and amp for not a bad price but there’s always better if you pay more money I can name off like 8 companies right now that are really good but expensive as hell
I have two w3’s back in the mid to late 90’s and I’ll tell you this that it didn’t take a lot of power for them bad boys to tare the roof off. Their frequency response was excellent especially in low power applications. I had a hatch back Chevy celebrity and it was knocking stuff off peoples walls as I passed through

I had that Dakota tuned to 40-45hz I don't know if you know how small a single cab 01 Dakota is but it's small and this was now shallow 12 the explodes were very popular and highly underrated for what they were. The shape of the cone plays a huge part as it has way more cone surface than a traditional 12 and the same for the kicker L 7 12's because they are square they have more cone surface than a traditional round cone or even a hexagon cone which makes them super efficient at moving air. 27 years ago i put two JL w7 15s in a geo metro. subs/box/amp cost more than the car... 136db i got trespassed from a few places for moving equipment. you couldn't light a lighter. it would empty your nose down your shirt. car got robbed
Here's my problem with this brand of subwoofer. And don't get me wrong JL AUDIO is okay, but you pay for the name mainly so to put into comparison for instance the brand Sundown Audio and Skar have way way more bass than the strongest JL audio could ever push and samething with Skar, DD audio ETC for half the price. I think I saw the JL AUDIO 13W7AE going for $1999.00 on their website. You can get 3 Sundown U Series and push close to 4 thounds watts to them for that amount!
For those that are complaining about price, look into their production processes and the attention to detail and quality the have. They manually test and scan each speaker and you can find the test results on the QR code. You’ll never buy a faulty JL speaker or sub. AND theyre have the lowest sensitively (87ish db vs typical 91db which is HUGE) which means their speakers sound better and louder with a given amount of power, so their 400watts is the equivalent of a “cheaper” 600watts. I’ve used a lot of brands, JL has the best frequency range also. Just don’t buy their amps idk what’s going on there, they’re nothing special for how expensive they are. Buy Audio control amps/dsps if you’re gonna spend that kind of money.

Honestly your box is more important than your sub. Out of your amp, box, and speakers ur box is crucial. Love JL but i refuse to pay that kind of money. Had some 10s when i was 20-25 years ago and the were certainly badass. Just refise to pay that, but people pay it so they charge it.

Well when you made the design over 20 years ago it most likely will have a lot of similar competition, but patents do expire, and some companies are not looking to sell their speakers for over 30 times the cost of production so they can spend 10 million a year on marketing
I will never purchase JL audio again! I have two w3v3 12” on a JL 1000w so read that again (not an off brand shitty amp) I bumped them hard but not ridiculously for about two years and the voice coil completely separated from the cone on BOTH subs. Got a shitty Skar audio now (does not sound great but loud AF) and the one 12” at 1500w 1ohm is still going strong! Definitely will look into more serious brands like DC audio Digital Designs or American Bass next.
Only two issues with JL: 1. RMS (lack there of). I personally need more than 300 watts RMS. I'm not trying to take over the world with 579,912,035 RMS, however 500 max-700 max is laughable. 2. Price (just can't justify). People keep saying the phrase, "You get what you pay for". Lies. $1000 dollars for a single sub (regardless of brand) that maxes out at 600 watts is not a deal to me. I would rather go to DD Audio, DB Drive or B2 Audio. Those three, to me, are less expensive than JL ,(depending on what components that you buy). B2 is the business, but some of their amps are higher than Snoop Dogg as a astronaut 😂 Just gotta pick and choose what brand is best for your wallet. "Quality" car audio should not be as much as buying a house. Some will disagree and thats fine. If you want to buy JL, buy it. If you want to buy Sundown, buy it. etc.......
You're comparing a high quality SPL company, and two mid-level SPL companies, to a high-end SQ company. And if you're not chasing numbers, you can get subs from jail that hit just as hard and are 10 times more reliable than a DB Drive (which if you're buying anything other than the WDX series, you're basically wasting money) and B2 is a cookie cutter sub in comparison to a bespoke type sub like JL. All of those brands have their place, but when you're talking about sound quality versus sound pressure level, it's not really the same conversation.
@@jayboogie7956SQL is Digital Designs's wheelhouse, as is DC Audio or Sundown or Orion. If you're looking for something a little more precise and you don't need more than 2500 watts RMS each sub, I'd go with the Image Dynamics ID-MAX or Savard Hi-Q. Even the Sundown U-series is more musical than the X or Z series, although those are super impressive in the SPL range. Your enclosure is going to be the biggest component in SQL anyway no matter which sub you choose. Even the Kicker Q Class is a solid performer in that arena.
I use the Massive Audio Summo XL 104 10 inch Sub I just have one installed in my Hyundai Sonata and that Model hits hard Bass is Strong and Deep def recommend Massive Audio Summo Subs
I wouldn't say you wouldn't sacrifice power, I'd say output is the word you are looking for. I also wouldn't say they're the most ripped off brand either. JL and RF design their subs a little differently than the rest, so it wouldn't be either one of those brands. I take it you're either a fan boy of JL or you push the brand because the profit margins are so much bigger because of the insane mark-up.

I've got a pair of no brand name big theater excursion boxes that were made for a little movie called earthquake back in the mid-70s.. can I put one in my attic and one in my basement took a lot of work because they're pretty damn large and heavy.. and now I can vibrate the land around my house by at least 16 ft away from the center.. turn down to about 8 in underneath the ground when did the circumference of about 30 ft surrounding my house I love it.. when universal studios first introduced cedar quality sub drivers.. guess what they were the first and everybody copied them.. and that's where we are today.. synonyms copied ripped off brands of subwoofers are no named thunder earthquake boxes that were created for the movie earthquake.. starring Charlton Heston and a number of wealthy over bloated Hollywood icons of the day.. I truly loved the 70s and the 80s for their theater excursions.. so look into the history of theaters subs they were used by universal pictures.. those are the sub do you really want
i have 2 10"'s of these in truck boxes in my element and they slap and i still have trunk space to throw in there and can remove them with ease when i have to.
Yeah well JL is severely overpriced and JBL subs actually sound better requiring less power!…I rocked JL way back when the W0’s and W3’s were common but I went back to my GTO roots and never looked back those JL’a blew from a JL250/1 whereas the GTO’s took the 500/1 and laughed they were their happiest with my Memphis PR1000.1 still rocking em till this day oh and both were sets were 12inch subs in a ported enclosure!

I ran 3 12W6 subs for years powered by Phoenix Gold white ZX amps for the better half of 10 years I also ran midbass and all my separates off the Phoenix Gold White ZX amps still having any found anything really comparable since. The head unit I had was a non-powered high volt eclipse head unit.
Pioneer came out with the shallow mount 2006-7 I believe they was one of the first or the first to make the shallow sub. I could be wrong but I remember they've had this sun since back then.

@@neilclark3243 The sub's enclosure and your amp's signal/type of music you play a much larger role in what a speaker can handle than most people realize. Also, many amps will push MUCH more than their rating would suggest if your gain is set too high.
I sometimes wonder if some manufacturers RMS rating is based on a perfect 40hz sine wave in a sealed box, or just complete BS. One size fits all numbers just don't work for sub ratings. It's a very dynamic set of components and variables to keep in consideration.

I'm still bumping a Rockford HX2 15", that I found in a junkyard in 2001. Custom ported box, tuned to 33hz. Shit still bangs and sounds incredible.
The JL W7 was JL's best sub, but from what we know nowadays about car audio, is you can make a Jensen 10" pound, but I think Sundown tasks the price to performance category.

I got a 13 W7. Had it since early 2000's .. the plus is you xan repair the foam if it tears or dry rots. I bought my speaker in the original box from a pawn shop over 20 years ago. Still bumping

All of my JL audio products, except for one amplifier, are still incredible pieces of equipment, and I have been buying them since 1998 I have 212 inch W3 V1. In a regular cab pick up truck with a 500 x 1 power them. It slams. I have their 2/12 Lockport box with 2W3 V2’s. Also powered by 500 x 1. Also slims. And I’m looking into getting two or 310 inch or 12 inch WOV twos. And possibly one of their nice six channel amplifiers.

@mac4782 what is the record right now? I understand that they are great speakers. No denying that. But is that an amateur or a pro team? Pro teams essentially have an unlimited checkbook for teams. Check out the '94 championship when Doug Smith set the world record, beating all pro teams as an amateur. That could certainly happen and wouldn't necessarily require "Sundown Audio" it's all about budget, and for $1000, you could get more spl with other brands.
That low profile design would really help under the rear seat of my Escalade EXT/Avalanche.. I have gotta retain the full midgate function.
Whats even crazier is they require even less cu inch boxes than the standard subs do cu/w. I love mine. I remember my first thinkine sibs back in the early 2000s. I beleive they were Xtant or Infinity.

@@ROCKNROLLMODS you mean to comparable non thin line subs or its own? My 10" JLW3-D4 thin lines require less box space and only fall 200 watts short from the standard line. However it is the same frequency and only 1.8 db less. So they are quite efficient.
@yodaddy82daddy70 compared to conventional subs. TBH, I've never felt the need to use shallow drivers. I have built enclosures and fit standard 12s in standard cab trucks. Sure, it wouldn't be a cast basket competition style sub, but either are these. And for someone who's really serious about it (competition level), wouldn't be using these either. If they were "Team JL" they'd be using some mega gnarly 100lb subs. And if you're an amateur competitor and not independently wealthy, you are likely not using JL. Don't get me wrong, they're great! But 1 JL 12" sub doesn't hit like 3 of the competitors. And quality can be achieved in quantity as well. Any sub can easily produce high-quality bass at lower levels. And three of them at lower levels are like chocolate thunder for your soul.
@@ROCKNROLLMODS o I know there are much more potent subs for the bang. I'm not competing anymore. I have just two in my F150 under the back seats. I didn't want to get rid of my seats and build a customer enclosure or anything. I also like loud quality sound, not a db rattle trap. So JLs were the best for the dollar. When I used to compete back in the early 2000s I completed in the db drags than started competing in IASCA until newer products eventually made my system obsolete and I really couldn't compete.
My original db SUV was a Ford Expedition. I was running four pairs of Diamond Audio 7" mids with 2" tweets and 8 10" W6 JLs running off 1,000W Xtants. It was fun as a 20 yr old but like you said I wasn't wealthy so couldn't compete as newer stuff came out.

I have Fi Neo 3.5 12-inch sub. Didn't have the money for a 12W7 let alone a 13W7 but, I still want subs with great sound quality and a lot of power. Love a sub that is the Goldilocks between a Sundown Nightshade and a JL W7. I love to have great sound quality but want it to be pretty loud, not so much that it necessitates ear-piercing super tweeters and pro audio mids.

10tw3 requires 0.519 cu ft compared to a 10w3 at 0.625 cu ft
12Tw3 is 0.80 cu ft compared to the 12w3 at 1.125 cu ft
the main advantage is the shallow mount which allows for under or behind the seat installs.

Everybody wants 'em. No one can afford 'em. When I was in high school we were bumpin pyramid phase iii etc. Every now and then we'd end up with some lanzars, if we were lucky. Or if hifonics, if we were really lucky. There'd always be one dude like "I'm saving up for my system, cause everything except JL sucks." They'd be off to the oil refinery for the summer, working their arses off not getting no play from the hunnies. To come back to school the following year with their fabled JL system, only to get their B-ass's handed to them by the real-world audio guys. Always ended with closing the trunk in shame, never to throw their hats in the audio-gon again.

Yeah I understand what you are saying from back in the day no my preference was kicker and MTX they weren't cheap they were expensive but JBL took the win until the early 2000s Manteca came out with those solo X's a big ass solo x 18 it was a number one subwoofer to have butt it cost too much and also the L5 L6 do you have MTX with their 5500 series Austell 7500 series 8500 series in the big dog 9500 series and then King Kong the Jackhammer series my first system was a bazooka system no lie 2 tens in a vintage enclosure it was a bass package that they had during that time you also get them in 12s and 15s what's the amplifier Circuit City was selling thoes bass packages before they went out of business they also sold MTX and Alpine and kicker

Both are nice. We carry Focal and it's easily my favorite for door speakers.

I would recommend their amps and the W7 subs all day and that TW3
First subwoofer was a 12W3. Their first version. I beat the crap out of that thing through 3 different vehicles between 1998 and 2014. Turned around and bought another in 2015. I push it with (dont laugh) a RF 40.2. What a combination!
But what people don't fail to realize is the quality of bass you getting out of jbl's is incredible this is how you can do a comparison now you know JBL make their own Bluetooth speakers now you have Sony that makes Bluetooth speakers and other companies no out of all those companies who's on some of the best bass wise was no Distortion of whatsoever JBL and no other sold for on the market can fuck with JBL I'm sorry I have to say it that's why they cost so damn much and I'm a MTX and kicker fan don't get me wrong but i halft to give it to jbl
The problem is, i know you can get a way higher powered sub for the price but a lot of people dont need that much wattage, it takes huge wiring and sometimes upgraded electrical, so for how much wattage jl's can take they sound super impressive and are very efficient.

Skar audio is prob one of the best right now when it comes to price like getting a good quality subwoofer and amp for not a bad price but there’s always better if you pay more money I can name off like 8 companies right now that are really good but expensive as hell
I have two w3’s back in the mid to late 90’s and I’ll tell you this that it didn’t take a lot of power for them bad boys to tare the roof off. Their frequency response was excellent especially in low power applications. I had a hatch back Chevy celebrity and it was knocking stuff off peoples walls as I passed through

I had that Dakota tuned to 40-45hz I don't know if you know how small a single cab 01 Dakota is but it's small and this was now shallow 12 the explodes were very popular and highly underrated for what they were. The shape of the cone plays a huge part as it has way more cone surface than a traditional 12 and the same for the kicker L 7 12's because they are square they have more cone surface than a traditional round cone or even a hexagon cone which makes them super efficient at moving air. 27 years ago i put two JL w7 15s in a geo metro. subs/box/amp cost more than the car... 136db i got trespassed from a few places for moving equipment. you couldn't light a lighter. it would empty your nose down your shirt. car got robbed

Here's my problem with this brand of subwoofer. And don't get me wrong JL AUDIO is okay, but you pay for the name mainly so to put into comparison for instance the brand Sundown Audio and Skar have way way more bass than the strongest JL audio could ever push and samething with Skar, DD audio ETC for half the price. I think I saw the JL AUDIO 13W7AE going for $1999.00 on their website. You can get 3 Sundown U Series and push close to 4 thounds watts to them for that amount!
For those that are complaining about price, look into their production processes and the attention to detail and quality the have. They manually test and scan each speaker and you can find the test results on the QR code. You’ll never buy a faulty JL speaker or sub. AND theyre have the lowest sensitively (87ish db vs typical 91db which is HUGE) which means their speakers sound better and louder with a given amount of power, so their 400watts is the equivalent of a “cheaper” 600watts.
I’ve used a lot of brands, JL has the best frequency range also.
Just don’t buy their amps idk what’s going on there, they’re nothing special for how expensive they are. Buy Audio control amps/dsps if you’re gonna spend that kind of money.

Honestly your box is more important than your sub. Out of your amp, box, and speakers ur box is crucial. Love JL but i refuse to pay that kind of money. Had some 10s when i was 20-25 years ago and the were certainly badass. Just refise to pay that, but people pay it so they charge it.
Man I remember getting some Urban Audio Works UB-120M 12" from KMart lol dropping them 12''s in a 5 gallon bucket slapping carpet on them and using a whole saw and cotton lining. Selling to kids in HS.

Well when you made the design over 20 years ago it most likely will have a lot of similar competition, but patents do expire, and some companies are not looking to sell their speakers for over 30 times the cost of production so they can spend 10 million a year on marketing

I will never purchase JL audio again! I have two w3v3 12” on a JL 1000w so read that again (not an off brand shitty amp) I bumped them hard but not ridiculously for about two years and the voice coil completely separated from the cone on BOTH subs. Got a shitty Skar audio now (does not sound great but loud AF) and the one 12” at 1500w 1ohm is still going strong! Definitely will look into more serious brands like DC audio Digital Designs or American Bass next.
Only two issues with JL:
1. RMS (lack there of). I personally need more than 300 watts RMS. I'm not trying to take over the world with 579,912,035 RMS, however 500 max-700 max is laughable.
2. Price (just can't justify). People keep saying the phrase,
"You get what you pay for".
Lies. $1000 dollars for a single sub (regardless of brand) that maxes out at 600 watts is not a deal to me.
I would rather go to DD Audio, DB Drive or B2 Audio. Those three, to me, are less expensive than JL ,(depending on what components that you buy). B2 is the business, but some of their amps are higher than Snoop Dogg as a astronaut 😂
Just gotta pick and choose what brand is best for your wallet. "Quality" car audio should not be as much as buying a house.
Some will disagree and thats fine. If you want to buy JL, buy it. If you want to buy Sundown, buy it. etc.......
You're comparing a high quality SPL company, and two mid-level SPL companies, to a high-end SQ company. And if you're not chasing numbers, you can get subs from jail that hit just as hard and are 10 times more reliable than a DB Drive (which if you're buying anything other than the WDX series, you're basically wasting money) and B2 is a cookie cutter sub in comparison to a bespoke type sub like JL. All of those brands have their place, but when you're talking about sound quality versus sound pressure level, it's not really the same conversation.

If you're looking for something a little more precise and you don't need more than 2500 watts RMS each sub, I'd go with the Image Dynamics ID-MAX or Savard Hi-Q. Even the Sundown U-series is more musical than the X or Z series, although those are super impressive in the SPL range.
Your enclosure is going to be the biggest component in SQL anyway no matter which sub you choose. Even the Kicker Q Class is a solid performer in that arena.

I wouldn't say you wouldn't sacrifice power, I'd say output is the word you are looking for. I also wouldn't say they're the most ripped off brand either. JL and RF design their subs a little differently than the rest, so it wouldn't be either one of those brands. I take it you're either a fan boy of JL or you push the brand because the profit margins are so much bigger because of the insane mark-up.

I've got a pair of no brand name big theater excursion boxes that were made for a little movie called earthquake back in the mid-70s.. can I put one in my attic and one in my basement took a lot of work because they're pretty damn large and heavy.. and now I can vibrate the land around my house by at least 16 ft away from the center.. turn down to about 8 in underneath the ground when did the circumference of about 30 ft surrounding my house I love it.. when universal studios first introduced cedar quality sub drivers.. guess what they were the first and everybody copied them.. and that's where we are today.. synonyms copied ripped off brands of subwoofers are no named thunder earthquake boxes that were created for the movie earthquake.. starring Charlton Heston and a number of wealthy over bloated Hollywood icons of the day.. I truly loved the 70s and the 80s for their theater excursions.. so look into the history of theaters subs they were used by universal pictures.. those are the sub do you really want

Yeah well JL is severely overpriced and JBL subs actually sound better requiring less power!…I rocked JL way back when the W0’s and W3’s were common but I went back to my GTO roots and never looked back those JL’a blew from a JL250/1 whereas the GTO’s took the 500/1 and laughed they were their happiest with my Memphis PR1000.1 still rocking em till this day oh and both were sets were 12inch subs in a ported enclosure!
