- The MPC KEY 61 is a sampler and workstation keyboard that feeds the legacy of Akai Professional's legendary MPC series with cutting edge 21st century technology. Its powerful processor and remarkably intuitive touch interface combine to create a musical instrument that's as comfortable in the studio as it is on stage. Plug in your favorite MIDI controllers to unleash the keyboard's full potential, or integrate it with MPC Software if you prefer to work wirelessly.
Believe it or not I'm posting new music on Soundcloud!

I kind of want one now 😎😎
Let me know if you do. I'd be happy to help if you have any questions
Busy works moving to the mpc side🔥🔥🔥
Busy works we need you over at fl bro..
Great video as always bro. I just picked up a MPC Key 61 on Friday and I am absolutely in love. Seriously, I almost cried after completing my first beat on this. Did I need this? No, but if you're an old school MPC head like me who loves the sequencer and the MPC workflow, but also demands an array of high quality sounds and an excellent key bed to play on, there is simply nothing like it... not even close. There was almost zero learning curve for me and I imagine that would be the case for most people familiar with the legacy MPC instruments. After just two days with this I can say that this is the best purchase that I've made in years. I heard that the key bed was good, but I was still surprised by how good it really was when I experienced it. The previous Akai controllers felt like toys to me. This thing has already sped up my workflow. The combination of having the MPC Live or X inside of a quality keyboard along with all of the new plug-ins is simply inspiring. There's no interruption of inspiration with time lost switching from one piece of gear to another. I never even considered how important that was because I've never had anything like this. I can sit down at this keyboard and produce uninterrupted from start to finish. I'm the son of the late American songwriter/ producer Henry Cosby and one thing that dad taught me early on is that when it comes to producing, you can't recapture the moment. Remaining in the zone is everything and if you have an affinity for the MPC workflow this could become your most valuable tool.
I’d like to second all of this. Picked it up Friday as well.
That was one of the most comprehensive looks at the MPC Key 61 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
This is going to be a game changer for producers who are actually keyboard players first. In my opinion it’s definitely a stay at home n your lab type situation as your center piece
I'll be bringing mine over to you to lay some keys down.
Ave is my guy , that would be a dope video .can't wait .
Its crazy that it took 22 years from them to do this when the Fantom S did it waaay back in the day. Having said that here we are and now we have a workstation with a mpc built in, which should catapult akai to the top of the workstation wars. When i saw u had one i thought we were gonna hear you jammin on it. Having said all that im amped to see where things go from here. Akai needs to send you one.
@@defcreator187 absolute facts but Roland sounds are better. For now…Fantom S and V Synth were ahead of their time.
I think they're far from the top workstation but its a start. In my opinion the sounds are still lacking a bit.
@@nsp932 the fact they combined 2 of their biggest products is the draw. The sounds are a bonus.
A 3500-4000 dollar workstation keyboard in 1993 was not profitable for Akai apparently.
So they chose the beat makers over the musicians.
@@jamesbrown-wt1cc maybe. But how much was the mpc 4000 back then? U trying to tell me if they added keys back then for the piano playing producers it wouldn’t have sold? Esp at a time where motifs, tritons and fantoms were flying off the shelves?
You’ve provided the most real world useful information from out of all the videos I’ve watched on it seriously this was very insightful
It’s Dope bro I got it yesterday and it’s fire 🔥 the main thing is the button and the placement is a little getting used to remember where they are. Keep up the good work bro🙏🏾👍🏾
I bought one as far as the sounds go they’re amazing and unique. I’ve played motif since 2000s as a kid always been Yamaha and Roland Fan. I recommend to have part of your set up.
Great video!! I can't wait to see what you & Ave cook up!! I like the keyboard alot & I have been waiting for something like this!! I'll probably pick one up a little later when things calm down in a couple months!!👊🏾💯
Mr. D, can you use the MPC Expansions on this board?
ASR-10 came to my mind as well when I first learned about the Key 61…😎👍🏾
May God bless you brilliant young man. I admire your recording studio. It's God that has blessed you, I'm so happy for you!
What a nice keyboard. It's awesome but it still can't compare with Roland, Korg and Yamaha workstations in the sense that those machines are dedicated workstations. You can create your own sounds by combining at least 8 voices together, tweak them as you wish, apply your desired effects/amps and so on to form a very fat custom voice with the ability to control individual voices on the fly using the onboard physical faders, rotary knobs and buttons. Now all that cannot be achieved on the MPC Key at the moment. Also, I can control DAWs with my Roland Fantom as well as perform automations with them, another feature which are not available on MPC Key at the moment. Also, Roland workstations and synths have usable audio interface features with good quality pre-amps and converters that can be used for audio recording and mixing purposes with Windows and Apple computers. That being said, Akai MPC Key 61 is a good start and I'd expect some improvement over time that will make it a real competitor in the keyboard workstation market.
Thanks for the video. What camera do you use to record this?
Honestly I love the feel of the keys on My APK49, it's an old and kinda out of date midi keyboard but I wont get rid of it.
First time viewer and enjoyed your review! So did you find it easy enough to browse among all of the sounds available? Thanks
It's a little faster the new way but I still prefer the old.
So far I only have one issue with it. I understand it's an all in one piece, but I should be able to send MIDI over USB if I want to use it to play into another DAW. I already have a USB controller, so I'm fine on that end anyway. I just wanted this to be able to do double duty. Someone in one of the MPC groups I'm in on Facebook pointed this out. Again, I get the concept, but if I'm paying close to 2K for an instrument that has 3 USB ports on it, it should be able to function with or without the MPC software open
i am a mpc and keyboard synth expert and i am a die heart akai fan from the mpc’s to using ableton for 10 years and i am disappointed if this is true because that’s a key role in any keyboard in any company to have usb 3 midi out , so you saying i can’t use this with ableton as a controller ??
@@b-north apparently not. Someone in a MPC group on Facebook posted about it. Having 4 audio outputs, I can deal with because it's a keyboard. That's the most that workstations used to come with. But to have the USB type B port and not be able to transmit MIDI over it is absurd
@@b-north actually, I think it MIGHT have that Ableton control that a couple of other models have. I'm not sure. I use Reason, so it wouldn't matter to me
@@b-north i think, it's better to spend money on proper weighted keys to use as midi controller in ur fav daw. This keys seems like gimmick to sell. Even mpc live 2 with USB midi controller is better than this 🔢
But how to make a song on that thing with vocals? The key61 don’t have the Force arranger! I am also thinking of buying it but…… I don’t know. Thanks for the share.
I enjoyed the video with you and AVE.
DJ Ave is the man.
D@mn right
Excellent review. Thank you. This is another great option for customers of Akai. No matter what your price point is, you can still get that world-class sequencer. Personally, I'll stick with my laptop setup using the Akai MPC Software and various peripherals. Whatever processor they're using in this machine. Likely can't compete on instances, polyphony and other things that dedicated computers do much better. But this is really cool and I look forward to hearing the new sounds. Especially if they're a loaded into RAM and instantaneously available as you're scrolling through versus programs like keyscape, omnisphere, etc. Where you have loading times.
Yeah I got a 4000 and Renaissance. With 2 88 midi keyboards. It's really a no go for me. I would get the X tho instead. I like it though.
Facts X is the Flagship still.😎💯
Awesome review I’ve watched a couple and I definitely like the way that you approach this I was thinking about purchasing one I have the MPC pro X and as you mentioned if you have it already updating the software is an awesome experience. But if you are are a beat maker this is definitely something to look at from a different point of you because this could take your skills to another level. I myself come from a keyboard sequence background and again as you mention there is nothing like the sequencer.
I have the Live 2 and still I wanted this... Krazy but I think I'm really going to gravitate towards the new workflow
People don't realize that the ASR10 was dope! It was extremely versatile and allowed for resampling and bastardizing samples.
I'm pretty picky with my keybeds. If it's not a weighted key I just have issues with it. Only because I learned on a workstation that had heavy weighted keys. When I transition to a real piano I have that same level of dynamics I practiced on my synth. This is a step in a good direction for them. Looks like that leak that happened last year was this... people were thinking it was going to be more like the Force. I think this is good that it was more MPC focused.
There were two render leaks. One of was the MPC Key, the other was the Force Key 6 which probably is coming down the pipeline at some point
@@AJWise I just saw that second leak. I agree the force is going to be in keyboard format, but geez I don't want or need another keyboard. I was hoping they would make a thinner profiled machine with a bigger screen with a better cpu and ram.
Dilliot , if your still having trouble will your Split samples with the new updates , Do this , go to your preference’s, do a reset, reboot the MPC and that should solve the problems with your splice files and sounds, Thanks to James on Getto’s page
Best workflow by far.
Great Video D
im diggin the twists mann
🙌
Good to have it, because more choice means more freedom, and there will be ppl loving it. Having said this, I didn't see that one coming. The whole world is about downscaling and compactness. Synth manufacturers are urged to produce compact modules of their devices, because ppl love that portability/mobility aspect and it saves studio space. Now, AKAI releases quite the opposite at a pretty steep price tag, I have to say. You could easily get an MPC One with a premium weighted hammer action of your choice + 500$ for the plug-ins and end up still well below the 2 grand. Plus, you have the flexibility of easily moving the ONE around, which is a benefit in my pocket. So, dare I say: "What's the point with this one?".
My Korg DSS-1 sampling synth maybe have a challenger
Yo I subscribe just looking at your studio that's a dope Studio you got there and as I was about to leave this comment you said about a McCree yeah I learned a lot by watching his channel and he's not buying pushing products and gives a real truthful Real Deal review but enough about him let's get you your UA-cam plaque! PS I grew up with the MPC 2000xl but I never did get that ASR 10 and always wanted one maybe you're right this is that,,,I also had the Yamaha Motif everyone else bought the Triton I bought the motif the drums were banging on that everything was banging on that and everyone else I knew how to train of course I didn't really have too many fly clothes cuz I spent all my money on equipment but I had a couple fresh pairs of kicks!
Super perfect timing! 🙃
😉
So, I'm on he cusp of ordering this board. I love your objective interviews. Really, the board costs $1300 ish, you're getting a plugin suite that's $500, the reason for $1800. When I saw this I thought about the Akai X7000. But, I have a question and I've not heard it in any video as of yet, which makes me wonder. I know it's a standalone unit, but...can you connect to your computer and use it as a controller in a mode with the Software on screen, if you wanted to? I have ther MPC Studio and a MPK49, but in my opinion, I feel like this board would be a classic, but.....memory is expandable to 32gbs and you can add a hard drive for storage, but...can you use your computer if you wanted to, or is it pure standalone?
If you can answer that question I would appreciate it.
I think you can use it as a controller as well. I believe it has a midi mode if you wanna take it further. Consult manual to confirm this.
Nice!! 🔥🔥🔥
Hi, Can i put in my own plugins? And can i use external memory in the keyboard? Thanks
Your right sampling was like something the keyboard did except for the korg triton I remember that being advertised as a sampling workstation hell it says it i still own one i got rid of every board except the korg.
Yo, that thumbnail! 😆
Hi guys, anyone know what's its max polyphony? seems akai didn't mention it anywhere.
I been sampling to the key board of the the mpc one since it came out can’t believe it took them putting a keyboard 🎹 on one for people to figure that out 😂
My question is does it have it's own synth engine for the hardware sounds, or is it software plugins inside of hardware like in the MPC One? If this sounds different in standalone like other synthesizer workstations, then I really want to get one, but I'm hesitating because of the sounds and the dynamic quality of them.
I know that there are other keyboard workstations that have incredible sounds on them. Does anyone know if these sounds are hardware sounds, or are they software inside of hardware? I don't know why I can't find anyone to help answer this question? Thanks...SBN RESONATE
I was going to buy the Yamaha Montage but decided that all fits all Keyboard synth work station was not for Me. While I think the MPC key 61 is kinda dope however I'm a Reason DAW user mostly, it's not perfect but I have no problems making music fast on there. I have a APK49 and can use MPC beats as a plugin or the other way round. Anyway long story short I dont need the Key 61.
Bro I Said The Same Thang To My Dog A Week Ago This New MPC Keys Is Going To Be More Then What Alot Of Cat's Think Plus A Turnt Up ASR-10 Hit Two Buttons All Ur 1shots Mapp Over All Ur Keys More Free Up Dates To Come Over 6,000 Sounds Danm
My question over this thing is....can you plug into the combo in jacks, send that audio through fx and then out of any of the 4 outs ie essentially live processing? I know Akai probably didn't design the Key 61 with this in mind, but it would be very useful if it was possible.
yes you can
@@dilliot2k thanks man😊
Should I trade my Mpc live 2 for this ?
no, live 2 is great.
Plug your best USB midi controller to ur live 2, and you will beat this.
I mean the live 2 got build in batteries and speakers and a SD card slot and it’s portable. I also stuggle to figure it out to buy this or not. Damn.
@@Beatz-Pocket are you keyborard player?
@@nieprawdopodobniebystry2158 yes Sir.
i wonder do u get the same amount of plugings for the mpc if u pay im trying get all the sounds the new keyboard 61 has
Yes you do
@@YattirSmith oo wow akai is the new king man!! im bout ta come up
Yea I. Just Got the X last week to go with my Live2 I could have got the Key61 it’s more of a downgrade less IO and dedicated buttons Also I use the Komplete Kontrol S49Mk2 Key61 was not meant to replace the MPC X It was for Gigging & for people who only have that But if you have a full studio with a Live 1 Live2 One or King X it’s a waste invest in a Better Audio interface Ect Ect.💯 Shalom!!
I always felt like the first Motif was the ASR - X 2.0
I could pull out my old keys (Ensoniq asr-10, Casio CZ 101 and create banks of sounds with those on that thing and save them???, I would be so happy 😆
This looks dope but I can’t leave Maschine and Komplete Kontrol
Basically the lay out is eps with a touch screen
It’s nice that akai are giving all the other loyal MPC users the same plugins this has , for only 499.00 extra ,WTF akai you were supposed to be the chosen one not native instruments
It is 500 only now and will go up to 999,- look it up
Is he doing a review on the MPC 61 without having one present? Just saying
ua-cam.com/video/yClYM6fXf7U/v-deo.html&ab_channel=AveMcree
So you used Ave McGee's MPC 61. It's just weird seeing a review on a product that you don't have in the video.
what about the keybed @11:00 , the pitchbend, explain the thing, you're just saying the word
woow top
I thought you were show it being used
Sadly I gave Akai the design for this board without even a thank you, smh, proof is on my channel
Scott Storch just made me wanna buy it...now to sell off one of my children for $3199aud so i can buy this unit😄 🤣 💀🤪🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
