Hey GUYS what's up, it's me Katherine, with another Broadway character makeup tutorial! This is a monthly series we do here on my channel where I create a makeup look inspired by a musical theatre character & we analyze the show!! These tutorials can be used as stage makeup, halloween costume makeup, cosplay creations, or fun everyday look!!

Today's character tutorial has been LONG AWAITED-- I'm so ridiculously excited to finally share this: Johanna Barker from Sweeney Todd.
You guys know how deeply touched I am by this show & role, and that I have a LOT of thoughts. Like I mention in the video, Johanna is one of my top dream roles and I feel like she often gets overlooked in terms of the show. So today, enjoy as I deep dive into one of my fave Sondheim ingenues!

Sithuron Roar now that I think of it, Hellfire from The Hunchback Of Norte Dame and Mea Culpa from Sweeney Todd are kinda the same song. Both consist of screwed up judges lusting over younger girls, then blaming the girls for it. (Seriously, Turpin and Frollo, get a life.)

When I was a lunatic in Sweeney Todd, I got to crawl under house seats and grab people's legs and it was wonderful!! Mrs. Lovett is a dream role and my best friend wants to be Sweeney Todd/ Benjamin Barker.
That sounds like a very fulfilling role!! although I'd be scared someone would kick me!!! haha

I was once talking to a friend who said that he's had the idea to put on Sweeney Todd like it's kindergarteners on the playground. Sweeney's blades are cafeteria sporks, Mrs. Lovett's pies are mud, and the chair is a swing. it's messed up and has this dark humor to it, but the idea was intriguing at the least.
I would watch that so fast.

I did a production of Sweeney just like you mentioned!!! Only the way we did it it was like everything was Toby's story. We set it in the 70s in an asylum and Sweeney and Lovett are the head doctor and nurse and Anthony is an orderly and Johanna, Beggar Woman, and Toby are patients, etc etc. Toby got EST in the opening sequence and imagined the entire story was happening inside the asylum just as the folk tale (cuz Sweeney is a folk tale). It was really extremely cool as a concept especially because at the end after Toby killed everyone he snapped back to reality as did everyone else and it was really dramatic.

Because you both have the same name and she's one of my favourite characters in all of Musical Theatre history, you should definitely do Katherine Plumber from Newsies, if you're anything like me, you'll be able to go into so much analysis and deep chit chat about both her character and the show Newsies in general (I also wanna see how you'd do her makeup and hair :)

Johanna is certainly a parallel of Todd. Both of them were wronged by Turpin, and are lonely because of it. Their class situations are different, but that is Sondheim's way of showing that it could happen to anyone and anyone could be Sweeney in real life (which is why the chorus point into the audience as if to extend the narrative into a real world context)
I played the Birdseller and this comparison has me SHOOK.
Revisiting this video after seeing Sweeney for the first time last Friday! The actress playing Johanna played the role in the recent off broadway revival and she was AMAZING
Shape tape is really pigmented which is fun (a little goes a long way), however I find that it does tend to cake or crease if not set properly. I would recommend purchasing it for your collection since it stays put. I find it is especially useful for stage makeup/contouring and shaping too. Also, I love your videos, so fun! I moved to a smaller town in Iowa, and I am from Portland, Oregon. Let's just say musical theatre isn't as popular, so I miss conversations like this. I always thought classic musicals were just common knowledge, and sadly I discovered this is not the case. Often when talking about my favorite musicals I have to preface with the storyline and character names.... it's just too much work *dramatic faint unto a chaise nearby* Love your channel

this might just be one of my all time favorite videos of yours. i love how passionate you are about the characters in all these tutorials you’ve done but in this one you provided so much deep insight that i never considered. you mentioned that people tend to miss out on johanna’s potential and i definitely did until hearing you talk about what a compelling emotional arc she has. this video inspires me to read deeper into and see beauty in the characters i tend to brush off

WHAT THE HECK MY MOM AND I WERE JUST WATCHING SWEENY TODD AND TALKING ABOUT DOING THE MAKEUP
On the topic of tarte shape tape: I never wear a full face of foundation/base unless for an audition/a show, but if I'm breaking out or have redness in my skin, I use the tarte shape tape to make those areas of my skin less red and it works really well!!!
(P.s. Sweeney is my favorite show so loved the vid!)

Oh my God I'm watching Sweeney Todd later on this month actually!!!!! I live in Athens, Greece and lately they have started putting up more and more musicals. I'm really curious to see if they have a decent translation (It's Sondheim, after all!), but I'm so excited to hear this amazing score live so I'll be happy no matter what I think! Plus, I started properly listening to the soundtrack a few months ago so the timing couldn't have been more perfect! (p.s.: dream role: Mrs. Lovett)

yes! i am currently playing johanna in a community theatre production!! she’s such an interesting character and i think she can be played in such a complex way.
I’m currently in rehearsal playing Johanna & this was incredibly insightful. I’ve also been focusing a lot on the word choice of “I’ll steal you, Johanna” that Anthony sings. Because she’s “blind”, she feels pretty much hopeless of saving herself so the thought of someone “stealing” her is what really sells her on Anthony and that’s what makes the Fogg murder so intense because, really, Anthony fails at stealing her. He can’t shoot. So she steals herself! Ugh! So empowering. We also, in our production, have added a really cool moment where, after she sees Sweeney kill the Beggar Woman and the Judge, he doesn’t grab her and force her into the chair. She reverts back into her “obedient self” from the beginning, but Lovett’s screams snap her back to reality & the strong woman she’s became and ugh it’s just so powerful. I love it!

I LOVE Sweeny Todd !!!!! It's just an amazing show in general! I saw it when I was in 8th grade because that was the show that the high school I would be going to the next year did. It was truly incredible and was one of the best shows I've EVER seen! I love the story and music and the characters! I just want to be in it SO BADLY!
I was just in Sweeney Todd earlier this year, and I don't think our director had Johanna kill Fogg, I always thought it was Anthony, so this new interpretation is amazing to me, and I wish we would've done it that way with the ambiguous ending of whether Anthony and Johanna actually end up together or not. Oh well. I hope to do the show again because it's flippin' amazing.

Personally, I love Tarte Shape Tape! I tend to have bad dark circles and that instantly covers them, I don't even have to color correct! It may seem expensive for a tube of concealer, but the tube itself is really wide so you are getting a ton of product!
This has literally become my new everyday makeup now

I love Joanne from Company, she's such a powerful character. Then you see confused and vulnerable she actually is during The Ladies who Lunch, she and Bobby are two of the more complex characters in the show.

We are doing Sweeney Todd at school (I play Lucy) but we are doing the movie script. Which, I do like at some points, but I would’ve rather done the broadway version because Johanna does so much more. And Lucy has her lullaby which isn’t in the movie. But I do love doing the movie script as well!
