The No.1 National Treasure of China Hides in the Deep Mountains of Shanxi

In the mid-summer of 1937, Laing Sicheng and Lin Huiyin returned to China after studying abroad. They came to Wutaishan, Shanxi, and found a secluded ancient temple in deep mountains. It’s called Foguang Temple. They confirmed that the Great East Hall of the temple was constructed in 857 AD during the Tang Dynasty, which denied the argument “there is no timber structure from Tang dynasty in China” by Japanese scholars. The various cultural heritage created in Tang Dynasty made Liang Sicheng marvel “it’s truly the No.1 national treasure of China.”
