Hi NL, love seeing Spire back even if it's only briefly! You asked about some tips for pathing. I'm not a pro by any means but I have a roughly 25% win rate on A20H so I have an idea of what I'm talking about. There are a few good rules of thumb I can give: 1. In Act 1, the first 3 hallway fights you take are from an "easy pool", meaning you should value them more than ? floors. For example, you cannot fight gremlin gang or Slaver + slime in your first 3 fights (these are considered hard pool fights) so it's a safe way to gain resources (card reward, gold, potion chance). 2. Try to take paths that have flexibility, meaning you have a branch at some point between a hard path with many elites or an easy path with few elites. This is nice because sometimes you're only able to take the hard path if you get good luck in your card rewards/potion drops so being able to bail if you get bad luck on your drops is really nice. 3. In general, you should be wary of visiting too many ? rooms. Hallway fights give consistently good rewards so if you can take them without bleeding out too much HP, you should. The main exception to this rule might be Act 2 where hallway fights are very scary (snake plant😨) and events are pretty high value (Upgrade all strikes/defends, apparitions, cursed tome, etc.). There are always exceptions to these rules of course, but I think it's a good foundation at least. Hope it helps!
for pathing, the events are actually pulled from two different pools in the first and second half of each level, its commonly accepted that the pool of question mark events in the first and second level are weak in the first half, and strong in the second half. Also important, the first 3 fights are also pulled from a specific pool of easier fights. So when pathing on the first floor my take is to prioritize fights early so so you get a lot of gold and card options, so once you're on the second half of the level you can aim for question marks and shops. The second and third floor are too context dependent, all I can say is keep an eye on your gold and gage your deck strength, if your deck is good at killing elites its always good to do so, they have a higher chance of dropping a rare card and give more gold which means more shops. But there are decks that are great at killing bosses but are weak to a given elite and you can just throw a run if you go elite hunting. In summary, at level one fight on the first half and go for ? on the second half, after that its a matter of practice and taking your time to figure out what you can and can't get away with.
Tip for the guy who wanted STS tips. The champion act 2 boss changes from chill debuffing to crazy style at half hp, so its often a good idea to keep him over that half hp threshold to let yourself get a few more claw & kunai procs for the upcoming onslaught, or if you know that you don't have any block to draw next turn, can let you get a crucial reshuffle. Similar stuff can be applied to time eater where the turn after you drop him under half he will heal back up to half and call you foolish, so chipping him right below the threshold can reduce the amount of healing he does and let you become the lish who fools. Pogged out of my gourd that you're back in the spire, and hope you'll check out sts2 once its out.
I just started playing slay the spire and I’ve been obsessed! Just won my first run with ironclad, been watching your older vids to learn. But now you’re also making new vids for it. We’ve never been more back!
I would love to see NL do a collab with Frost Prime. He is one of the biggest slay the spire creators and has been doing a lot of teaching collabs with other streamers recently (which NL mentioned some interest in learning the game at a higher level).
Having jumped on the NL train via Sisyphus and Nintendo Switch Sports for background noise, I suddenly understand the appeal of these roguelite videos. Man's commentary is engaging and rewarding if you can keep up with it.
Don't get me wrong, I think Hades is incredible, but StS is like. A gaming masterwork. I would say nothing that's come out since is on its level. Not to say the subjective experience is unparalleled, but the quality of the *game* and its mechanics is unbelievable. In five years, it might be in the echalon of games like Doom, Civilization, and Pokémon if its influence continues to grow.
Haven't watched UA-cam as much after covid (yeah that's some years ago now), but today on my holidays I've scrolled through my subs and was like - oh, there's NL with the familiar deck builder, that's so heart warming. The tone of this video, the whole 'we are in this together' vibe was very nice and I enjoyed listening to this a lot! Definitely going to watch this new StS series. Thank you Northernlion for the years of entertainment!
Hi NL, this is mostly parroting some stuff that FrostPrime has said, but almost every single card in the game is better than strikes and defends, so stuff like Astrolobe is still great because even if you get cards that aren't necessarily what your build is looking for, it'll probably still be better than a strike/defend
Some not so backseat advice if you want it NL: -Recently I started watching a StS player called FrostPrime and he pointed out that question marks are not that good in Act 1 as there are too many sub-par events with the exception being golden idol. -Act 1 is usually (but not always) where you create the skeleton of your build while focusing on raw high dmg cards for those beginning low hp enemies. -Act 2 is where question marks pop off with some great events (duel of those 2 knights, coliseum, library). -Also Act 2 has a good number of enemies with multi hit attacks, a good thing to look out for. -Act 3 is your victory lap, just don't get wrecked by the snake lady. So glad this series is back, I hope the comments stay civil and I hope you enjoy the grand comeback. Kind regards, A horrible StS addict and question mark lover.

Dude, I'm so fucking stoked! I just picked it up again recently and reached ascension 16. Started watching some of your older runs, it's awesome there will be new ones!
So cool to see you play StS again! Since you asked for advice: IMO for a deck that had this many 0 cost cards in it you had way too much energy and not enough card draw. You've skipped over card draw a lot and ended many turns with 4 energy. A Coolheaded+ or two would have gone hard. Looking forward to more StS videos.
He comes back to slay the spire and the first episode egg daddy already blessed us with a classic forgetting he has unceasing top plays. I’m so here for the slay the spire content
24:00 Ideal path act 1 usually starts with exactly 3 combats before a bonfire. After 3 combats, enemies are selected from a hard pool, and you'll want to have at least one good damage card and an upgrade before you deal with those or elites Edit: brothers in Christ, he literally asked for heuristics on pathing.
NL, one tip with Creative AI is don't view it as a build, but a scaling enabler. You don't need anything else that works with powers, you just give it 1 upgrade and you end up with tons of useful powerful cards generated for you that give you momentum. Meanwhile in fights you don't expect to go long you simply avoid playing it.
Potential Frost Prime collab? He's a great slay the spire player and has done a ton of videos/streams recently with other creators that are learning/relearning the game and he's an NL viewer too. IDK just thought I'd put the idea out there. Regardless, love to see Slay the Spire back on the docket
@@Ozone946 I don't think so? I looked it up before I used it, but that sure as f doesn't mean I'm right 😅 Only thing I thought of afterwards was a missed opportunity to use _doth_ as well, but that ship sailed.
Only got into slay the spire well after NL had quit. But every other slay the spire content creator makes it a point to mention him, whether it be as inspiration or just peer to peer respect. Great to see him getting back into it on UA-cam
Love watching NL play these kinds of games, I think of all the ways I can improve his play and do better, then get immediately steamrolled in every game I think im better at. Gotta reconcile the fact he might actually be goated.
Hey NL two things that I've learned in that robbers fight. 1 is you usually want to rush down the more healthy robber first. I think in higher ascension he will do more damage and he tends to run away more (don't quote me on this one). Also, in that same fight, you might have been unsure on whether to use dual cast first or attack. I think the correct line is to dual cast first to see where the RNG lands, then you attack to burst down one of those bastards. Love that you're picking up STS again. Thanks for your content!
Sorry if it seems like I'm nitpicking or anything. It's just something that I noticed while watching that I had to reconcile too. NL did mention he didn't mind some feedback. Besides, I know that NL has way more hours than me in the game, so it shouldn't be perceived that I'm lecturing him. I'm simply a sojourner traversing the spire seeing another fellow traveller and giving some of my own observations. Thanks for looking out though!
Some advice from an experienced StS player: Pathing - Question-marks are kinda bait. You want combats, especially in the early game and lower floors in the act. Combats get you cards and money, they increase your chances of getting potions and rare cards in the future. All things you need to win. Especially at higher ascensions, question-marks are more likely to be detrimental. Unless you're looking for very specific events, it doesn't make sense to aim for them. Aside from that, look for Elite-heavy paths with pivot points. If you're popping off, you'll want to have the option of collecting relics, and if you're struggling a bit, you'll want the option to just take a campfire and normal combats. Also, look at the Boss of the act and plan accordingly. In fact, look to the next elite. The next combat. The more ready you are for what's right ahead of you, the better your chances of building a strong long-term deck become. If you focus on the macro-strategy from too early on, your cards might be too suboptimal and you won't even get to Act 3 where the deck would hypothetically come together. Relics - The key was the wrong pick. Your deck already had 4 energy and loads of cheap cards, and you almost never ended a turn where spending more energy would've helped. Take a look at your Act 3 and notice how often you play your whole hand with energy to spare, or just spend the extra energy on block you don't need (aside from Spinning Top, which wasn't guaranteed at that point). The entire benefit on focusing on 0-cost attacks is that you *don't* need extra energy and can spend the relic slots on better things. The Astrolabe would be much better. Yes, it could've transformed your basics into orb-centric cards that didn't fit, but *pretty much any card is better than a strike/defend*. You'd be happier to draw an upgraded non-strike, non-defend card almost every single time. And if you rolled incredibly poorly on one of the cards, that's just a removal you would've spent on a strike anyway.
Really love the game and the fact that you played it again. One of my favorite games you've played in the past and hope the backseating is kinder this time around
The issue with NL playing Hades IMO is that while it is a GOATed game in its own right, its a bit too dialogue heavy which can disrupt his commentary. Where roguelikes like this with no dialogue give him an excellent platform to enter a flow state and just say whatever pops into his gourd without worrying about missing stuff or talking over the game.
I remember watching NL play slay the spire years ago when I was at school and binging more than half the episodes over that year during my free time, this is kind of nostalgic

24:00 Ideal path act 1 usually starts with exactly 3 combats before a bonfire. After 3 combats, enemies are selected from a hard pool, and you'll want to have at least one good damage card and an upgrade before you deal with those or elites
Edit: brothers in Christ, he literally asked for heuristics on pathing.

@@carbonsiren oh you’re so true, seeing the comment just gave war flashbacks
I was rewatching old slay the spire videos these days and then you drop this. i'm truly blessed.
What a coincidence! I just picked up Slay the Spire again the other day. Shit's still awesome.
1:35 Noita mentioned POG
him playing noita would be such a disaster and i pray we get to see it some day
Ya love to see it. I've been playing way too much Slay the Spire (and Slice and Dice) on my phone lately to kill time. I'll be here for it.
FrostPrime collab would go hard
this has been the best timing ever because my sister just got me into slay the spire and I'm so deep into it now
Potential Frost Prime collab? He's a great slay the spire player and has done a ton of videos/streams recently with other creators that are learning/relearning the game and he's an NL viewer too. IDK just thought I'd put the idea out there. Regardless, love to see Slay the Spire back on the docket
I have perfected stress management from meditating on the feeling of the unceasing top misplays. Nobody can stop me watching this man.
We've never been more back holy cow
Thank u NL just beat A8 with this near exact build, you’re a great help and teacher

@@Ozone946 I don't think so? I looked it up before I used it, but that sure as f doesn't mean I'm right 😅 Only thing I thought of afterwards was a missed opportunity to use _doth_ as well, but that ship sailed.
@@LaserStorm117 that’s why I put in a question mark, im not sure myself💀

NL coming back to this game singlehandedly made me decide to finally give it a try and hooolyyyyy dude this is a GOOD GAME
Even without the a20 grind it's such a masterpiece
X-COM Enemy Within comming back will be the biggest comeback ever
Full long war campaign
I've been rewatching the whole original Slay the Spire series in the background at work, on Episode 356 RN and he uploads a new video. My man!
"small decks, D-E-C-K-S, I'm kind of agnostic if you change the vowel" is a sleeper hit holyyyy
Small ducks are kinda cute, though.
I don't get it.
@@pucci_did_nothing_wrong He's saying that he doesn't care about the sizes of docks. Which seems reasonable.
Only got into slay the spire well after NL had quit. But every other slay the spire content creator makes it a point to mention him, whether it be as inspiration or just peer to peer respect. Great to see him getting back into it on UA-cam
YOO POGGERS MY EGGSLAYER HAS REBORN
I freaking love that slay the spire is being uploaded again. Thanks nl!
Oh my gosh it’s back?? We’re so back
Edit: Oh no he likes StS more than Isaac, I think I know what that means
OK baby
SHUT UP BRO, Don't ruin this for us.
NL, I would put my money that you're the best rouge-like youtuber! Thanks for bringing back this favourite!
HELL YES
I will never tire of watching Slay The Spire runs. Welcome back NL!
Some advice from an experienced StS player:
Pathing - Question-marks are kinda bait.
We're Hades guys of course we languish in misery every time NL returns to an old roguelite
At least he said its name 😅
did he not like hades 2? Or is he waiting for the release?

@@LaserStorm117 HADES MENTIONED!!!!!
I have been rewatching the old slay the spire videos ( I’m around episode 450) so fresh content is great!
Omg finally some good fucking food
I'm so conflicted cause the commentary is great but the frustration of him rushing through obvious misplays gets to me every time, I love it.
