I am setting up my blue tooth helmet with Cardo Pack talk bold and the drift XL. Did you use drift XLmicrophones or after market? I am trying to decide which microphone to use. Thank you very much for your video.
I was looking at buying one of the drift xl but I’ve seen so many negative comments from other users I’m now not sure. I’d only be using it as a safety feature as in not really needing to record my voice so the problems others have experienced with regard to sound quality isn’t a problem. What I really want to know is what you think of the video quality on the camera and can it be hooked into a USB port which I have on my bike so it’s constantly charging instead of charging separately after a days riding?
Hi Rod, yes the microphone port is waterproof and also comes with a usb lead to Jack plug so instead of it being used for a mic it also doubles up as a charge connection too so you can have a waterproof constant power supply to the camera. Here are one test results I did to prove how long the camera will last for: Ghost XL 1080p 30fps WiFi off 8hrs 47mins WiFi on 7hrs 14mins
Thanks for an informative video. have you plugged your cardo pactalk bold into the external mic? I was just wondering if that was a possibility using a "Y" splitter. cheers
Hello Motourev I have finally bought the XL after a bit of umming and arring over the X or the XL the external batt on the X or the better placed Mic connection was the reason. any way bought it and arrived yesterday.. (your video persuaded me) had concerns about the mic not working looking at other vids on here.. but all is good, but little panic attack at first as I know you need to have the Mic symbol displaying which wasn't at first and was that to make sure that mic lead is pretty tightly screwed in.. I updated the firmware via the Drift site on the computer then when I went on the App there was an even newer firmware on the App , so seems the web site is behind with the times.. I had (still have) the Drift Stealth 2.. which crap for the audio with no ext mic, so I have jumped straight from the Stealth 2 to this.. I have no idea if any of the other ghost cameras had the vibrate bit on it.. but so far that is my favourite bit along with the big buttons.. and the loud beep, should be able to know when recording easy peasy. and not as big as first thought obviously bigger than the Stealth.. few adjustments to where to put the mic (i sound like darth vader) and the sensitivity... so all good so far.. oh in app took me a while how to get the settings up had to watch your video again, yep that cog symbol in top right hand corner, Thanks (what a wally I am).. oh biggest gripe is there wasn't no stickers in my box, I feel left out (sod knows what I would of done with them though)....
Lee Mason nice one mate, I think they are cracking cameras, love the chunky buttons and vibrate too. My X and 4K don’t vibrate so that’s new to the XL. I struggle with my audio all the time as my voice is so deep. Drives me mad as I have to EQ my audio so much and when I add the other guys footage their voices are so clean, but they all have girlie voices 😂. Enjoy the camera mate, glad the little vid helped and get some vidz uploaded 🏍🤘🏻👊🏻
I solved the Go Pro dilemma. I bought a thing called Sugru and molded it to the charging port with case on and lead in. Before totally cured took it out and left to dry. Its been through loads and never had a problem of any leaks as it stays plugged into usb port on the bike The Drift looks good for vloging though
Hi motourev: i was just about to order it on Amazon after watching your good review but there were a few, quite a few, bad reviews. Looks like youve owned a few. Whats your overall opinion on reliability etc and is there better options for the price. Also, were you sponsored by them for the video. Many thanks.
Tee Jay hi Tee Jay, yes in our team we now have 3 ghost XL’s and are more than happy with them. The very first batch that was released had issues with poor audio which was found to be a problem with the microphone connector lead and the firmware, Drift released a firmware update which cured the problem. The 8hour battery life is real I carried out a test and got more than 8.5 hours. Drift help us out with supplying us with a few cameras to use but we do not have an official sponsorship with them. My honest opinion is there’s not another camera note market that has this battery power and record 1080p 30fps for nearly 9 hours, I would recommend the camera to anybody.
Thanks for your review. I had an old Drift Ghost S for years until it got nabbed when I left my helmet (with camera) on my bike. Loved the remote feature. Does either the Drift Ghost X or XL have a remote? And is the X waterproof?
Hi, great video. I’ve got one of these. I found the wind noise to be ridiculous on it, so I’ve just got myself and external mic that I’ve yet to set up. I notice that you have an iPhone…after connecting my camera via the app to download footage on my iPhone and iPad I’ve found that the app has created literally THOUSANDS of empty albums on both my phone and iPad. Drift say this may be because I connected it to my iPad and the app is only for use with a phone but I wonder if you’ve had this issue? Other people I know say avoid the app for downloading footage and use an SD card reader to export footage directly into your iPad or computer.
I bought the Drift XL PRO. The settings menu is the same as this XL camera. I did turn on the one touch recording following your recommendation. 👍 One thing that annoyed me about this camera, is that it does not have a fastening point for a safety tether on the body of the camera itself. From what I can see it is only possible to atach a safety tether on the mounting bracket wich is attached to the camera body with a screw. If tha screw gets lose, you lose the camera. Even very basic cheap electronic devices have tether anchoring points on the body of the device itself. I do not understand why these cameras do not have that feature. 🤷♂️ Badly needed for peace of mind for use on motorcycle helmets!!
Awesome review, I am in the market for buying a camera to mainly use as a dash cam whilst out on the motorcycle, so require something to fix to the helmet. Have you used the XL in dash cam mode? What mic have you also used? Keep up the great work.
Thanks for this video. I'm thinking of getting one for my cycle helmet. Now this might sound like a silly question, but without that extra cable you used for the microphone, is there any sound at all when recording a video? Is all you have to do is plug that cable in and let it hang? I'm worried that by letting it hang it'll flap about in the wind and cause audio issues.
@@Motourev Hi, very informative video. Any idea what the internal microphone in the camera is like or if it's good enough to record what drivers say? Their customer service is absolutely horrible - good luck if you buy one and it has a problem.

adrian tompson welcome brother thanks for the sub 👍🏻 yeah deffo agree I love drift cameras. I have a session 4 and works ok now I put permanent external power supply it’s lasts all day.
Maybe you might know, I need a spare USB Micro Charging cable. There are different variants of Micro Ports. What type is the Drift XL - ?Is is Micro B or Micro C or something different. USB at other end.
Thanks for a very detailed review. I was considering one of these series of cameras for bike safety but put off by some negative Amazon reviews regarding reliability. Have you experienced any issues yourself?
The only issue has been the instant one touch record which distorts the audio. I made a video on a way around it. ua-cam.com/video/NaYBfMHvA04/v-deo.html
I have had a series of drift Cameras. Not one of them has failed and all very good equipment. For the unit I mount on my bike, one it is mounted looking forward, via a Ram mount fitted to the Brake Reservoir. That has a "soft" interface to reduce vibrations, plus as a Ghost 4K I enable the Optical Image Stabilization. The USB Audio connection has a "holder" that the plug goes through to support ALL of the plug and cable weight. The reason being that while these units are well built, the printed circuit boards are able to be damaged by external loading - they are light by the need to be small and light weight. The whole set up works very well. I get the group conversation onto this camera using an additional Cardo Packtalk Unit. The speaker outlet plugged into the Drift Mic. Another Drift Camera can be mounted on an adapted Leki hiking stick facing back to the bike, and yet another on the helmet. These are set up, as Master an Clones, one on, all on, one off all off. Riding friends also have drift camera. so post production there is a record from a number of perspectives plus the chatter that goes on and suits the video. I cannot say enough about the drift cameras. I am considering an array mounted above and to the rear of the bike filming to allowing the possibility of an all around view.
@@syaifulakhwanbrosingabina2360 Sorry Mohd, but I am travelling at the moment and don't have ant video with me. But I do have cameras and once I have captured some video I will post if I can. My first drift camera I still have and it is still working. That is a HD170, then a Ghost HD, then a Ghost S. Latter 2 x Ghost 4K and one Ghost X. All very good. Like anything if they are cared for correctly, they function correctly and last a good time. Using several cameras the footage can be bought into Edius editing software and using multi camera setting selected as required to make great film. Important to synchronise at the start point with a clapperboard or similar sharp brief sound. This allows all raw footage to be synchronised

sorry if i sound numb but..if i delete each vid after each ride will this keep my memory clear ??...only want one to record each journey in case sum knob pulls out in front of me...not tech savvy
Install the app on your phone and switch the camera into DVR mode- dash cam mode, this way the camera will work in a continuous loop, as soon as the memory card is full it then starts recording from the beginning again and will continue for ever to rewrite over the memory card.
Hi I have just bought one of these cameras for a trip to the West coast of Ireland. Could you tell me how many of hours footage you are getting on a card?
aha, take it all back, turned everything off, shouted bad words at the app and the camera, turned it all on- I think I put the frighteners on them 'cos now they work.... amazing what a bit of a talking to can do!
Drift are still advertising the XL as coming with a 90 degree angled plug in jack mic adapter when in actual fact it comes with a straight jack which when the camera is fitted to a flip front helmet it catches on the collar of the jacket. I have brought this up with drift on more than one occasion and they just keep saying that they haven't got round to changing the picture on there advert. I sent mine back for a full refund because of their wrong advertising picture.
Robbo I wasn’t aware of that, I suppose an angled lead would be better with certain helmets. We have the straight connectors on the 2 Ghost X’s Viper and Iceman use and have not had a problem with them catching the shoulder. I suppose it differs from rider to rider.
Motourev :Motorcycle Tours & Reviews cheers mate but it wouldn't have been a deal breaker if i wore a full face helmet but because of the flip mechanism there's only one place it can mounted and so a Jack that connects in the bottom of the camera catches my jacket. If i wore a full face helmet I could mount it on top of the helmet as you do. Any way as I've mentioned I'm seriously not happy with Drift for not changing the picture on there advert. I won't be buying from Drift until they seriously get there act together. I'm usually a fan of Drift but if they feel comfortable duping potential customers ( I've informed them on more than one occasion via email) by selling the camera with a straight jack mic adapter when in actual fact there advertising picture still shows the mic adapter with a 90 degree angle then i won't be buying or recommending drift to my biker mates. Rant over. Still enjoying your channel mate 👍👍
Man Vs Bike it sticks down about the same as the one on the X and 4K, mine doesn’t catch my shoulder and I ride a sports bike so my shoulders are right up against my helmet. I have the camera close to the side of the visor, if it’s located at the bottom edge of the helmet I imagine it might touch the shoulder

I am setting up my blue tooth helmet with Cardo Pack talk bold and the drift XL. Did you use drift XLmicrophones or after market? I am trying to decide which microphone to use. Thank you very much for your video.
Yes I only use a drift mic as other branded mics are too sensitive, he’s a test I did with other mics
ua-cam.com/video/fCJz_2qxrCc/v-deo.html
Thanks for a thorough review. Do you have an opinion about using the camera for still photos via the remote?
Camera seems to work fine. The image is certainly as beautiful as the gopro 👍
Here are one test results I did to prove how long the camera will last for:
Ghost XL 1080p 30fps
WiFi off 8hrs 47mins
WiFi on 7hrs 14mins
Hi what camera did u use on the windshield??
Cheers buddy for replying 👍🏻
Thanks, just discovered that if you turn the wifi off on the camera with the external mic attached you get better sound quality.
That’s interesting
Great review, I like the long battery life saves a lot of hassle with recharging etc. Might treat myself to one of these 👍
Excellent! Thankyou!😀
I had to return mine as i wear a flip front helmet and the mic adapter does indeed catch the jacket collar ☹
Why not fit it the other side of the helmet with the lead facing up as it has a rotatable lens enabling a horizontal perspective.
Thanks for an informative video. have you plugged your cardo pactalk bold into the external mic? I was just wondering if that was a possibility using a "Y" splitter. cheers
Not tried yet, trying the weekend. I tried on my Ghost 4K but it’s mono input so it wouldn’t work
@@Motourev thank you. I will be interested in the results.
Hello Motourev
I have finally bought the XL after a bit of umming and arring over the X or the XL
the external batt on the X or the better placed Mic connection was the reason.
any way bought it and arrived yesterday.. (your video persuaded me)
had concerns about the mic not working looking at other vids on here..
but all is good, but little panic attack at first as I know you need to have the Mic symbol displaying which wasn't at first and was that to make sure that mic lead is pretty tightly screwed in..
I updated the firmware via the Drift site on the computer then when I went on the App there was an even newer firmware on the App , so seems the web site is behind with the times..
I had (still have) the Drift Stealth 2.. which crap for the audio with no ext mic,
so I have jumped straight from the Stealth 2 to this..
Muchas gracias por el comparativo.
Excelente video.
Sugru is amazing stuff🤘🏻
Hello, thank you for this nice video. If the voice mic is not connected is the video sill have sound?
Yes there’s a mic built into the camera itself
thank you
How do you fix the camera on helmet? Using the tape given?
Glad your mic worked, major issues with the drift one not working........
Best review I’ve seen of the Drift XL have on my self love it but is a way to zoom out so I don’t see as much of the motorcycle??
Gavin Fraser the only option is, go into field of view in the app and change it to 90 or 115, that should narrow the view down.
Motourev :Motorcycle Tours & Reviews thanks might try that
What about the video stabilization?
Very helpful thank you!
What are all the accessories you can buy?
X is rain proof, XL s water proof and there is a remote but it’s additional, not included.
Good upload thanks.... So do I go for the xl without image stabilisation or 4k with image stabilisation?
I have both cameras and don’t use image stabilisation
I only download direct to my computer and never through the app. Any .thm files can be deleted
Fantastic review mate, am looking to get one of these, how is it now after two years? cheers, Dave
Still going strong, better off getting the XL Pro now that’s out
Hi mr XLT won’t continuously record can U help please
Why have drift still not made a clip on mount as opposed to the 3M sticky mount.
W G you mean these driftinnovation.com/collections/mounts
Hi, can I ask if there's some way to do HDMI out?
Only via the usb
I bought the Drift XL PRO.
The settings menu is the same as this XL camera.
I did turn on the one touch recording following your recommendation. 👍
One thing that annoyed me about this camera, is that it does not have a fastening point for a safety tether on the body of the camera itself.
Badly needed for peace of mind for use on motorcycle helmets!!
Awesome review, I am in the market for buying a camera to mainly use as a dash cam whilst out on the motorcycle, so require something to fix to the helmet. Have you used the XL in dash cam mode? What mic have you also used? Keep up the great work.
I don’t use dash can mode and the mic’s we use are the drift mics as many other branded mics are too sensitive. 👍🏻
Did you end up getting this? If so how did you mount it to your lid? I'm considering doing the same as my commute is getting a bit 'dicey'
I just used the adhesive works fine
Hi could you tell me if a 64GB card is big enough for 8hrs or do I need a 128GB thanks
joggerjeff you will get 4.5 - 5 hours on a 64gb card using 1080p 30fps
Thanks for this video. I'm thinking of getting one for my cycle helmet. Now this might sound like a silly question, but without that extra cable you used for the microphone, is there any sound at all when recording a video? Is all you have to do is plug that cable in and let it hang? I'm worried that by letting it hang it'll flap about in the wind and cause audio issues.
The camera has a built in microphone so it records sound . When you plug in a wired mic it switches off the mic that’s built into the camera itself.
@@Motourev ah right, got it. Thanks for the info!
@@Motourev Hi, very informative video. Any idea what the internal microphone in the camera is like or if it's good enough to record what drivers say? I'm a scooter courier and need to record this kind of stuff. Sadly the abuse is so common. I don't have anything else in my helmet like a mic or anything.
@@Bangandthedirtisgone the built in mic will only pic up the outside noise like the wind. And anybody talking to you. The mic inside my helmet just pics up my voice.
@@Motourev hi thanks. Just wanna be prepared if someone starts behaving like a moron and be able to get it all recorded clearly.
Good review. Seems to work well ok a motorcycle with the heavy dampening of bike. Not great on a pedal bike as no stabilisation.
Yes could see vibration could be an issue
Thanks for sharing 👍 😊. Stay safe 🙏
Great review, I have the Drift X and I am really considering getting the Drift XL also, its a good price for what it is and compared to GoPro, you deffo get more bang for your buck... 1 question I have, I see it was 8.37 for battery life, do you know how long it is if you use WiFi, as I like to see the view from phone also
*Also, any guys on here reviewing this Video and read my comment and have not watched Normandy Vid these guys have done, I strongly recomend you watch these as apposed to any other reviewers, I was blown away by the captures and the emotion and thought that was put in to them, I am convinced you all will be also*
Cheers mate for the comments 🤘🏻. Battery life using WiFi would drop it to about 6.5 hours if I recall. I can always run that test for you, I will try it tonight.
@@Motourev top man only when you have 5mins, no rush, cant go anywhere in this pissing lock down... just good to know when I order and go for a blast
is there image stabilization?
Thanks for the great video. Question: is there some knack or technique for rotating the lens? I just bought a Ghost xl but I can't budge the lens. I want to rotate it 90 degrees, so it's oriented the way you had it when you took your bike for a ride at the end of the video. Thanks.
David P 🤔 mine just turns easily
@@Motourev I put on my leather riding gloves and that gave me better grip and I was able to turn it.
2020 / FEB 20 -- I bought a 4K model - it failed - it took many months for drift to authorize a replacement - it took months to send a replacement -
They are extremely slow to reply to emails - they promised to send me 2 accessories because of unexpected shipping charges - but months have passed and the promised items have not arrived.
Their customer service is absolutely horrible - good luck if you buy one and it has a problem.
Hey buddy Great review. I am seriously thinking of getting this model. Do you recommend it now you have owned it for a while?. Also is it easy to edit videos as in just put music on etc.
They are great cameras, battery life is immense. I’m currently making some videos on how to edit.
@@Motourev brilliant thanks for the reply. Do you just tilt the camera up and down to get the correct angle once on the helmet ?
@@grossi46 yes the mount moves up and down and the lense rotates 300 degrees so any angle is easily obtainable.
good review. went to drift 12months ago, lot better camera for bikers small good add on mic and battery life. i still use a gopro session very good still works, ive had loads session 5 all broke after couple months .gopros are just way to big then you put a mic adaptor on there very bulky dont no why motor bike vloggers use them they look terrible on your helmet. drift are neat and cant see any difference in image.
adrian tompson welcome brother thanks for the sub 👍🏻 yeah deffo agree I love drift cameras. I have a session 4 and works ok now I put permanent external power supply it’s lasts all day.
Good review pal, I just need the Ghost XL. Then I have the full line up of cameras from the Ghost HD up to the Ghost X
The Flying Jock u lucky fella, you can open the Drift museum 😂🤘🏻👍🏻
Motourev :Motorcycle Tours & Reviews 😂😂 just need the XL then I might lol, i love the Drift line up, never had a problem with any of the cameras
The Flying Jock same here, would never use anything else. GoPro got a lot to learn with battery life
Motourev :Motorcycle Tours & Reviews definitely pal, can’t fault the battery life at all. Don’t think I’d ever turn to the dark side( GoPro) 😂😂
The Flying Jock 😂😂 I think Drift would track me down and string me up if I ever did
How I can download the drift app in the android
I am in favor of the X and XL. My concern is what happens when the XL battery dies do throw away the camera or is there a replacement battery?
You could open it up to replace battery I suppose. We’ve had no issue with ours and nearly 4 years old
Anyone mounted this to a Nolan N87? If so was it easy to do and has it remained on the lid!
Maybe you might know, I need a spare USB Micro Charging cable. There are different variants of Micro Ports. What type is the Drift XL - ?Is is Micro B or Micro C or something different. USB at other end.
how to reduce wind noisy?
@@duncangatland6021 do you have some video using drift, So i can watch . Thanks

What size memory card do you use to get 8 hours of recording ? Ive got a drift ghost HD at mo and on second battery in 5 years so looking at getting another camera
128gb gets about 11 hours
Does the xl have image stabilisation ?
And do you know if you can run 2 drift cameras from one remote ?
I’ve got the ghost s and I’m looking at getting a 2nd camera , but it will only work if I can run it from the one remote :)
Wilswood#69 they have clone mode so the remote operates one and that camera operates the other one in tandem
Thank you
sorry if i sound numb but..if i delete each vid after each ride will this keep my memory clear ??...only want one to record each journey in case sum knob pulls out in front of me...not tech savvy

Sure can I timed it:
Drift Ghost XL
1080p 30fps
128gb Sandisk Card
14hrs 37mins
Camera battery lasted 8hrs 40mins before needing a charge
Wow that is pretty impressive! Thanks for the information it will be a great help figuring out how many cards to take.
So,battery can record with 8 hours nonstop?
Yes I get 8 hours 40 mins non stop recording
aha, take it all back, turned everything off, shouted bad words at the app and the camera, turned it all on- I think I put the frighteners on them 'cos now they work.... amazing what a bit of a talking to can do!
😂👍🏻
Robbo fair enough 😂👍🏻
New to all this, is there not an angled mic that you can purchase
Jamie Carter there possibly is, I know on Amazon there are loads, suppose its purchase and try and return if no good
That mic adaptor looks like it points down quite low. Is it likely to catch on the shoulder?
Man Vs Bike it sticks down about the same as the one on the X and 4K, mine doesn’t catch my shoulder and I ride a sports bike so my shoulders are right up against my helmet. I have the camera close to the side of the visor, if it’s located at the bottom edge of the helmet I imagine it might touch the shoulder
Motourev :Motorcycle Tours & Reviews Cheers buddy.
Just purchased this cam as my 2 previous older drift cam have now failed. Question about the mic, I have a mic used on previous drift and worked fine, but plugged it into the adaptor extension you screw in it doesn't work. Noticed the jack on the screw in adaptor has 3 black rings, my mic jack only has 2 so not compatible? Tried looking on Ebay and Amazon but cant find one. Help please anyone. Thanks.
Broadsword 007 Motorcycle Cruiser they sell the mic from the Drift website. If you watch our other video we tried to use another mic and the sound was really bad and it was a better more expensive mic, we found the drift mice are better suited to the cameras

Can I ask why you set the mic to 1
When riding at about 60 mph there’s a lot of wind noise inside the helmet and the mic is too sensitive at 3. Plus inside a motorcycle helmet the mic is literally touching your lips so we have them set on the minimal settings so it doesn’t distort.

As I had road confrontation with a driver who was trying to stop me filtering.
No the mic is just for in the helmet. There is a mic on the camera which works when the helmet mic is unplugged but you just get wind noise from the bike. Ideal if using for a dash cam which it has dash cam mode in it.
