Bach - Toccata and Fugue in D minor BWV 565 - Van Doeselaar | Netherlands Bach Society

  • From Disney’s Fantasia to The Phantom of the Opera, the opening of the Toccata and Fugue in D minor, performed by Leo van Doeselaar for All of Bach, has provided many memorable moments. The secret is in the striking first note, followed by that brief, tense moment of silence and the overpowering descending series of notes (or variations on it, like in Pirates of the Caribbean). Unfortunately, Bach’s own score has not survived, which has led to many speculations on the creation date of this wild and original composition that is actually not very ‘Bach-like’.
Recorded for the project All of Bach on October 8th 2013 at St Martin's Church, Groningen. If you want to help us complete All of Bach, please subscribe to our channel bit.ly/2vhCeFB or consider donating bit.ly/2uZuMj5.

I’m sure that Bach would be pleased and honored to hear his music performed with such feeling and finesse.

You have to be, if you want to be able to play as good as this guy. Unless you play piano yourself it's really hard to appreciate exactly how hard this is.
The more complex a piece is to play, the more emotion you have to bring into it in order to make it sound exactly how you imagine it should sound like. the slightest mistake and the song sounds "cut in half" to your ears. and it doesn't sound perfekt anymore.

I thought I heard every possible interpretation of this piece within the realm of good Bach performance practice and good taste and believed there was nothing new to say. Well, Van Doeselaar proved that I was completely wrong! He breathes new life and new meaning into a piece that has been turned into a cliche thanks to cheesey advertisements and bad vampire movies, and finds so much hidden beauty and drama in the piece and makes it all new again. So grateful for this performance!

Why people hate the ending in major chord? It's great.
I'm a bit shocked at first. But then I realised, renaissance music always end in major chord, whatever key being played. It's not totally wrong to continue musica ficta practice in baroque piece. It's part of interpretation.
I'm glad he did that. Especially because the organ's temperament allows that.

This is called a Tierce de Picardie (meaning Picardy third). It is magnificent!
It is a major third in the final tonic chord of a minor-key passage, a device mostly used in Baroque, although occasionally in Classical music, and then adopted much later on in neoclassicism.

    • @bach
      @bach  3 роки тому +72

@Angelica Marta Cahyaningtyas The shock you mentioned is not so strange. Since many questions are asked about this ending in major, here is a response from Leo van Doeselaar:
"During a concert I once spontaneously played a Picardy third (i.e. in major) at the end of this piece. For some listeners this came as a shock, but I thought it worked better and more naturally than ending in a minor key, especially on a baroque organ in older tuning. For me the following considerations play a role:
      1. Almost always in the Baroque period a movement or work in minor key was ended in a Picardy third. As far as I know, Bach only wrote the final chord in a minor key in the A minor Fugue BWV 543.
      2. In the case of BWV 565, only one copy of this work (by Johann Ringk from Berlin) has survived and that is a fairly late copy for an - very likely - early work by Bach. It could very well be that Ringk accidentally forgot to write down that one cross.
      3. And if not, the listeners in the Baroque period must have had the same shock with the minor ending as some listeners now with the Picardy third. This consideration was the decisive factor for me to end in Picardy as much as possible, in particular on baroque organs: either the shock is ultimately just as great as it was then or Ringk accidentally forgot to note a cross. An omission that in that case has been imitated millions of times..."

The church reverberation hides most small but my ear heard none. He's a true organist, he played to the maximum. Really, WOW. Year's of practice. He's definitely a Master. Beautiful. In a great hall for music. TOO bad, we can't have people in the church, but the sound would change, because the reverberation would wreck the pure sound. But, he'd still bring down the house, his bass be thumpin , and his finger work was smooth as silk. Great job, sir. Wonderful performance.

It reminded me of the first time hearing played in a cathedral by a brilliant concert organist. So wonderful to hear it brought to life. As an organist I often declared that its one work I would never include on a program. This interpretation is totally inspiring! Thank you Van Doeselaar. I have always wondered if finishing on the major tonic would work and or be good taste. With Van Doeselaar its almost shear assertive brilliance. So love the performance with the inspired decoration. Now that have the Passacaglia and Fugue in C Minor, I feel why it is debated among scholars if Bach wrote this piece. Purely from feeling, the Passacaglia feels so much more musically dense than BWV 565, it's bound to make anyone feel as if BWV 565 is not by Bach.

If it’s not by Bach, I can definitely see his pupil Krebs writing this. Their styles are so similar for many they’re difficult to tell apart (mainly due to the fact that Krebs learned like most of what he knew from Bach). I find Krebs’ work to be a bit more “brash” or perhaps a tiny bit more showy... this certainly fits the bill.

The Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565, is a work for organ written between 1703 and 1707 according to musicologists. The imslp attributes it in 1708. In his early days, Bach was a great admirer of Dietrich Buxtehude, to the point of absenting himself for several weeks, while working for the city of Arnstadt, in order to go and listen to him in Lübeck. North German organ works from this period are characterized by the presence of the Stylus phantasticus, derived from improvisation. This one includes heroic passages, with sought-after harmonies and sudden changes of rhythm. The toccata is a musical piece for keyboard instruments in an improvised and virtuoso style involving arpeggios, traits, and pedal. Klaus Eidam puts forward the hypothesis that the work was written in order to severely test the mechanics of the organ as well as the sound and playability of the instrument. Indeed, Bach was shooting all the stops of the organ in order to evaluate the power and the sufficient wind produced by the bellows. This piece would have been originally created for the harpsichord and then transposed to the organ to increase the spectacular effect. Due to the age of the work, there remain many unknowns about the conditions of its composition. Recent musicological works attribute the work to Johann Peter Kellner. However, there is a very broad consensus that the BWV 565 is indeed an original work by J. S. Bach. Certainly a youthful work, it is particularly imprint with the influences the composer loved to imbibe. The resemblance with other works are clear BWV 564 or BWV 566, and the initial formula of three notes more generally called a pinched is found the BWV 538, BWV 540. Generally speaking, the solidity and length of the fugue, particularly the small contrapuntal labyrinth that Bach used, was practically inimitable at the time. *Lucien*
