RIP Mulgrew Miller. I had the privilege to see you live with Kenny Barron, and I even got to meet you. Thank you for being such a kind person who was willing to meet and talk with your fans. You were truly one of the few authentic artists left in these days. You will be missed
I actually cried, in front of other grown men, when I found out my hero Mulgrew had passed away. One of America's all time great musical geniuses. I guess these guys, Tatum, Parker, Fats, now Mulgrew, all that electricity seems to consume them quicker.
RIP Mulgrew Miller, one of my fav pianists...died way too young (57)...got to see him at the JMK Arts center a few years back with Steve Turre (of SNL's band)...got to hang with him afterwards too...I told him, "I never thought I'd ever hear him in Sheboygan,WI" and he looked at me deadpan and said, "I never thought I'd ever BE in Sheboygan,WI...didn't know it was a real place...thought it was a joke name, meaning the 'end of the world'..." then we all cracked up...
The guy was a monster, he could play anything and make it swing,He never received the recognition he deserved, he will be greatly missed in the jazz world and by me.
GOD BLESS THE MEMORY OF THIS GREAT MAN - MULGREW MILLAR!!!! As a Jazz (and other genres) pianist, I promise to live up to your legacy the best that I can!!!!
make no mistake mulgrew was a giant piano player and would have gone on to greater things.what a loss to us all in jazz.i loved his playing and will miss him.many thanks.
I have to confess that I had never heard of Mulgrew Miller until seeing the recent series of videos posted by Brett. He is a great pianist, and a very good jazz educator. Thanks for posting this.
Oh My God!!!!!!!!!!!! I'd forgotten abooooooooot Mr. Miller to tell you the truth!!!!!!!!!!!! But, EVERYTHING in it's time!!!!!!!!! Right??????? How marvelously gifted he is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a beautiful talent!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank You!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Betty Green
I'm sincerely wishing you a full recovery, Mr. Mulgrew Miller. Please fight tough, sir. I hope to have him, his wonderful music and his wonderful insight around for many years to come.
Heard stories about this guy before I heard him myself a couple of years ago - I think he was loved by many players there over the pond aw where I hang out - judging only from the stories but the feeling is strong.
Listen carefully to his left hand. I remember hearing him in a concert at Sanders Theater in Cambridge where his playing in the line of Tatum was even clearer. We lost such a great musician when he past, but at least we had him among us, and we should all be grateful.
I never heard of Mulgrew Miller; I have heard of Mulligan's Stew; however, I must admit that he is an accomplished jazz pianist. Roger Plafkin=Plafkin Farms, Ada, Michigan
all it takes is practice and confidence you can do anything if you put your mind to it...for the most part its probably just having fun and learning and experimentation, like he said its just like learning to talk babys coo and make noises until they can say dad or momma and etc.

Thanks JazzVideoGuy, I could spend many days just enjoying your videos. I especially like the ones where the musician is explaining music theory or his own musical concepts and then pokes out an example on the piano. Got any suggestions or other videos that match that description?
The jazz tune/song -- usually played in F major --- is I LOVE YOU, written by Cole Porter for his 1944 musical "Mexican Hayride"... It has been recorded by many jazz notables, including John Coltrane.
It's not "Night and Day". Night and Day starts with three identical notes. "I love You" descends after the second note. The next phrase is similar in both songs but there is an extra note in the "Love You" phrase which distinguishes it. Listen to a sung version of "I Love You" and you will hear what I'm talking about. After that the two songs are quite dissimilar. watch?v=rWd4YkBrc2Q

Beautiful. Did he ever do a studio version of this tune?

tunefultony johnson ....on his 1961 album LUSH LIFE, with Coltrane on tenor sax, Earl May on bass, and Art Taylor on drums.
I love Bill Evans, Monk, Wynton Kelly, Ellington... but above all, I would like to play bebop the way M Miller did.
All great. Mulgrew was a special pianist and person. Miss him, big time.
