    Even with the minor QC issues this is an amazing representation of a F-14B. The sculpted details and especially the paint and decals are top notch! Wow. It does look beautiful in that banked turn position on the stand. Thanks for sharing.

    Watching you assemble this particular model was simply frustrating. It's quality issues like these which currently drive me out of collecting models. Everything becomes more and more expensive and quality control just doesn't hold up... I mean this is terrible with print errors, non-fitting parts, a messed up canopy and a useless stand. That's NOT okay!

    In my opinion the best F-14s in 1/72 scale are by Hobbymaster & Calibre Wings... my issue with the JC Wings Tomcats is that the main gear doors remains open even in the gear up position... however with regard to the A-6 Intruder, Su-34 Fullback & P-38 Lightning, the JC Wings molds rock!

    Tomcat trivia. VF-11 is one of the oldest fighter squadrons in the navy. The boars head squadron insignia is from Gordon's London Dry Gin, and has been on the squadrons aircraft since they were flying open cockpit biplanes the 1920s, & is named Arnold.

We also had an actual boar's head we would keep on the wall of our ready room at sea and ashore. My recollection is the AIM-54 could be launched from as many as 90 miles, depending on speeds, altitudes, and aspect of target (ie: coming towards or flying away). For example it may have launched from 90 miles to target but if both were heading towards each other at high mach he may only be 50 miles away at intercept due to collective closing speeds.

    Kind of a random but interesting fact in regards to the F-14B: The original F-14B (an early 1970s project) was intended to use the Pratt and Whitney F401 (derivative of the F100) in place of the TF30s, with the proposed F-14C consisting of an avionics upgrade. Neither variant was built, due to cancellation of the program in 1974-1975 (due to cost overruns/reliability issues with the F401/early F100s).
    The F110-powered Tomcats ended up making up less than half the functional fleet, which is rather unfortunate (the TF30s were frankly not a good long-term powerplant for the Tomcat lmao)

  • @DrunkenLeprechaun

    i believe those were supposed to be mk82s (the first ground ordnance shown) as i believe the 31's and 38's were only on the F14d (for it short period of service) not a standard loadout on the B model which carried the 10/12/16/24 GBUs. But i could be wrong (only DCS fan lol). Yes it was only lantirn pod - they still went with the lantirn even on the D model over amraam 120 capability in regards to funding when i looked into it.

It’s like 50% of the models you buy end up damaged and flawed from just trying to fit accessories. Even when you take all the care and time in the world, if pieces don’t fit, it’s not going to end well.

    • @sheetpostmodernist398
      @sheetpostmodernist398 7 місяців тому +11

      Retractable gear on a model this size aren't going to work very well, they'd wind up being either too clunky and too inaccurate to look good, or being too fragile to hold up the weight of a metal plane. Model planes that do use metal retractable gear generally just use metal sticks with a single pivot point, and don't include any of the more complex retraction mechanisms. The F-14's gear have to twist and collapse in several ways to fit into the bays.
      If you're going for visual accuracy in a display model like this, fixed gear that you can swap out with closed bays is the only way to get something really detailed. Cheaper toys may have them, but that's because they're not display models. Models like this one aren't meant to be handled a lot, because there are so many small parts that could break or fall off.

    O'Hare is ORD. As a kid, I though it was short for ordnance. 😅 Not what an airport should be called.

    As a former Tomcat mechanic (AD-1) I find it not realistic to make the panel lines stand out to the degree they do with these types of kits or those who build the plastic kits. Panels lines do not stand out.

    I'll never understand how something like this can be released with things like "fennedy" and the weird text on the canopy. Executive officer? Commanding officer? Never seen that. They're just making stuff up.

    • @MilitaryVehicleReviews
      @MilitaryVehicleReviews  7 місяців тому +1

      Ya those details were disappointing. Only seen this on JC Wings so far.

      "Executive Officer" & "Commanding Officer" titling on the canopies are as old as naval aviation itself, not sure how you've never seen it. Do you mean you've never seen it spelled out in its entirety like that? Plenty of squadrons do it that way.

    I've watched your videos before and they were very good. But I do have to ask you. Why did you choose JC? There's other better quality model companies like century wings, yes caliber wings is similar but the paint and details are alot better. Century wings has better attaching ordinance.
    Also here's a bit of history for you. The Iranians used the Phoenix to great affect and shot down quite a few airports, also the Phoenix has a range of around 100 nautical miles.
    I do like your channel keep it up.

    • @MilitaryVehicleReviews
      @MilitaryVehicleReviews  7 місяців тому

      Thanks for watching! I agree, there are several other manufacturers (which I own a lot of..) that are better quality. I went with JC Wings on this one bc the photos looked Amazing and I have never owned one of their models so I thought I would give it a try. Definitely left a bitter taste for me though.. I may buy another one of their models in the future to see if I just got a bad one.
      Good info!
