That reporter was trying to be snide asking Simone "if you don't care about the competition then why are you here?" It's not that she doesn't care about her performance or being there. She just no longer allows medals or people's wavering opinions to validate her like she has in the past. She has accomplished more in her lifetime than most gymnasts ever will. Nothing to prove.❤
She has already achieved greatness, she's merely capping on the crest.

I think care is not the right word to use for a foreign audience and the journalist misunderstood. The medal counts are not important now , it’s the performance and the mastery of the sport what keeps her in it. She has won everything there is to win in the sport, so that is not what she is in for anymore. Why would she even attempt a double like vault if all she cared about was winning.

@DeepSeas.. it was an unfair and goading question. She's achieved more than any gymnast in history, man, or woman. She has nothing to prove to anyone but herself at this point. It isn't about medals. It's about her love for the sport, and to her that's what matters. It's safe to say that she's going to the podium regardless of her feelings about standing on it or not.
I love her respect and support for her competitors and her joy for the sport.
If she decides on a NO to Paris, that’s fine, she’s still the GOAT. Simone is so well loved n respected n she’s doing this for her. Love how she uplifts the other gymnasts to do their best & holds no animosity. How can you not love her💕

Simone is an absolutely Queen. I think totally understand what she's saying. She doesn't have to prove a thing. She's there for the journey. And of course it will be a legendary journey cause she's simone.

I love how Simone (and many other athletes) speak in the plural. WE do this. We do that. It shows that she appreciates the team of people (coaches, trainers, practice partners) who give their time and talents for her success.
I feel like that was the best interview ever, from the GOAT. Her attitude is so good, no pressure, be in the amount, have fun. Yes she just one 4 more Golds, and a Silver, but my favorite Simone moment was her reaction after not landing the Double Pike in EF. She just got up and smiled. GOAT 🤩

Just having Simone there is good for ALL her teammates and competitors. She's so inspiring and an ambassador for the sport.
She started her comeback less than a year ago, and look what happens? After all that time away from the sport. A legend. Props to her. Cant wait to see what she brings with more training, and Paris on the horizon!
She is a GREAT interviewer!!! I loved her active listening, and actually acknowledging the questions she was being asked by simply saying "yeah," or "mmm" or things like that. She seems so...genuine. And I feel like she genuinely is there for the sport and not the medals/counts like she says in the interview. It's also so great to see her really speak praises of, yet still acknowledge Rebecca as competition. But she brings up a very good point - They're there to push each other. And it is a competition. But that doesn't mean you have to be disrespectful or not appreciate your competitors' wins and strengths. I think Simone does that - Rebecca is her competitor but I feel they lift each other up.
She's the GOAT, she's incredible, we don't deserver her... but ngl her hair and makeup were also perfection ✨

i love that she has learned to say 'no' - i think it def helped her not doing as many press things. I dunno if anyone else feels the same, but from this interview I get the impression she might decide she has come back and proven herself - not necessary to others, ,but mainly to herself, and she doesn't 'need' another Olympics. I think there is a real possibility she may opt out of Paris next year. And i wouldn't begrudge her for that at all.

Great interview. It's shameful how some of the media behaved at these Worlds, like grown men pushing others and touching other people's equipment. And that snide question "if you don't care about medals then why are you here" made me so mad.

I finally just now figured out what the last one was, where she goes "I literally have no idea" - A guy was asking about her next competition. You can hear him talking over others at 4:08 and then you hear his voice again around 4:12 so I'm guessing he repeats it again, cause after that is when she responds.
the used to it reply came from someone asking how she felt "about all this" - so presumably how she feels about all the press??? That would be my best guess.

I wish that fans of different gymnast could support their fav without dismissing and downplaying the achievement of others. They should learn from the athletes themselves who always show great respect and give recognition of their opponents abilities and potential as Simone did here in this interview.

What does she mean by “hard serfaces”?
they train on crash mats to protect their ankles but all the training at worlds is on hard surfaces - the equipment is less forgiving

@@TommyWiseauu They do have the same protocols, but in the US they don't have many big competitions where they'd be using those hard surfaces. In other countries and continents there are many more competitions so gymnasts have a lot more chances to see how things go in a competition scenario with hard surfaces.
All gymnasts practice new skills and tons of repetitions on much softer mats and/or foam pits, and then they do all train on regular mats but typically not as many reps and they will often have multiple mats or a sting mat (a thin padding over the floor) to help protect from injuries. they do practice on competition surfaces, but not very much. So usually going to a competition is when you get that experience.

I don’t fully believe her about not caring about the podium or medal color. You know she wants that gold on beam in Paris. And after finishing 5th on bars, I’ll bet any amount of money she’s at least thinking about upgrading her routine. I’m sure therapy has taught her not to beat herself up about not reaching goals, but she still cares way more than she’s letting on.

You have to understand what she is saying here. She is saying that at THIS championship, she did not care so much about getting on the podium as she was about PROVING to HERSELF that she can still do her skills. Once she was able to compete her skills she felt that that was good enough for her, and after going through what she did you will have to understand why that was.
If she continues onto Olympics next year then her sights most likely will change because by then, MY WORD, she would have been back FLIPPING and TWISTING longer than she has been to this point.
Simone has never really cared all too much about medals for herself but for the US - because her first Olympics were under the Karolyi's and we know they were 100% about the medals (and money) - so from 2013 to 2016 at minimum it was about how many medals could she get for Team USA because that was the focus before the scandal broke out in late 2016 (look it up, I'm not explaining!) Afterwards - her goals probably changed because USAG changed.
I agree except for the bars comment, she hates them, she has one of the shortest routines for a reason. Now that vault, she is coming for that for sure
You could see it on her face after the fall, walking back for her 2nd vault, she was maaad but it wouldn't be smart to admit it here. She seems kinda over the interview stuff though, like 'I don't really want to be answering your silly questions'

I am very impressed with her maturity, and grace. Shes still a force. But I do agree with some others who have said she does care about the podium and medals. She was counting on nailing that vault and walking away with vault, floor and beam. ( I agree she is realistic about bars- never been her strongest event.) And frankly, I hope she does care about the podium- because if she really doesnt, its quite selfish to take that opportunity away from another gymnast who works just as hard and does care.
She said she doesn’t care about the podium she didn’t say she didn’t care about her performance. She’s still gonna go out there and give it her best. She’s not taking any opportunity from anyone because majority of times her best is a gold and even her not so best is still a podium.
