My wife has listened to me listening to you a LOT. She just asked me why do people call in to even try. I told her because these people have believed this all their lives and are basically having their worldview shattered, and that is a real hard pill to swallow.

Can someone explain this show tho? I mean when it comes down to it, the supernatural cant be proven. Belief in God is not rational and there is no evidence of God. So arent y’all kinda just watching people chasing their tales? It may be more honest to say the premise of the show is to deconstruct a belief. Sam called the show. Sam answered direct questions with direct answers. Sam tried his best to make his case while acknowledging the flaws in it when pointed out. Don’t be like Nick. Be like Sam.
At least you can try with people like Sam. I have huge respect for that. People like Nick are a total write off.
Sam is also a kid whose balls haven't dropped yet. He does what mommy and daddy say, Maybe in a few more years, he'll learn to think for himself, develop his brain, and come to a more rational, logical conclusion.
Eve made such a good point when she said it's disheartening for people to deconstruct theistic beliefs but then stop at woo.

I think it's a combination.
½ the theists know they can't answer without being shady.
And the other ½ know they haven't thought about it enough to justify anything. They just accept what they've been told to and never want to delve deeper for fear of finding the obvious contradictions they've heard about.
As an ex-theist, I can say that there are at least a few (maybe I’m the only one) who want to get their answers straight, and their thoughts in order before calling, and by listening become ex-theists.
I think many theists have come to their belief through something other than reason. Then they start to believe their beliefs are true.
Then when forced to explain why they believe they startcoff believing that their beliefs must be grounded in something rational. But since they are not, they flounder around trying to ask themselves why and getting no rational answers.
Most have not read the bible, I find that astounding.

@@NadiaPakashDas And by the same token, Matt's tone isn't just about berating the callers but rather about getting fed up with them not answering basic questions and just generally interfering with his ability to run the show (people whining about the double standard around interruptions is a good example, if he's interrupting it's to get things back on track which is not the case when they do it). If people would just shut up and give actual answers then he wouldn't blow up on them, but instead they ramble over everyone like confused idiots then wonder why it didn't go well.
Even better, if I'm remembering the call right Eve was also getting fed up with the caller's bullshit by that point. She wasn't as aggressive about it but there was very clearly a "dude, just stop whining and this will go so much better" subtext (that's barely even subtext if you just look at her body language lmao, she was about to rip her hair out). There's definitely a point where someone is too annoying for it to be worth coddling them anymore and they were both rapidly approaching it.

Aaron DID insinuate that Matt's quality of life was worse because he did not believe in imaginary Friends.
He said people get comfort out of imaginary friends, and when asked if he thought Matt's life was deficient for not having imaginary Friends he said something to the effect of "you can't have relationships in the same way I can"
He realized that and then back pedaled then immediately denied it but that's absolutely what he was insinuating.
That is a classic argument from Christians. That along with Atheists don’t have morals. We are miserable, angry, don’t believe in anything and have no purpose in life. I feel like Sam just walked home from a Frank Turek talk with a twinkle in his eye and a satchel full of really bad stereotypical arguments. These apologists do these guys a disservice by lying to them the way they do. They are wasting time for people like Sam, who could be learning about REAL science instead of getting lied to. This is one of the clearest cases of recent calls of just pure indoctrination. Sam is a victim through and through. But the silver lining is he sounds honest and seems like he wants to know. These types of people don't stay theists very long.

English ist not my first language and writing is sometimes easier than listening/speaking. And last but not least I’m getting older and the hearing may get into the way as well, especially if it’s a real, traditional, sh*tty phone call.

Sam saying the hosts are making their faith stronger makes sense...because they're debunking their "evidence" leaving faith as the only reason to believe.
Haven't gotten to his part of the show yet but I always find it hilarious when theist call in with that type of language. They have no clue how bad that makes them look. Their willingness to believe key things about their worldview because they've debunked 99.9% of that view leaving blind faith must make it true. I've never understood why religious people are so comfortable taking something on faith that by all accounts if there is some kind of afterlife & getting into to "good" country club is contingent on believing a certain thing. Taking that on faith with millions of different religions, thousands of different sects of their own religion. Yet they must be right because it's all been debunked leaving only faith, meanwhile other religions (some in the same family tree) have also been debunked leaving only faith for them. Are they also right?

I agree, if you have evidence you don’t need faith. In the absence of evidence, the only thing left is faith. All religions require faith from their followers, so I often ask people who answer their beliefs are based on faith, how is it they don’t practice a different religion every week? Their long silence in place of a cogent response is very telling.

Hell: I was taken there and saw one skeleton in the left and many skeletons on the right facing this one skeleton, they were there for idolatry and fornication, and the background can only be described aa destruction. 2ndly I saw a girl on earth on the same bed as a guy and she kissed him on the cheek (implying a unlawful sexual relationship), the girl died and went to hell and fire consumed her entire bod but there was some skin left over , I remember thinking “at least she has some skin drooping from her face” and then more fire came and consumed her skin
Alexander was great caller but for his story his therapist is worried about him because he gave signals about potential harm doing and she goes to school and he found it surprising because he was emotional but man this is the least miraculous thing that could happen in this situation. Also the sensation he felt was probably relief that somebody save him from making a mistake.
It was apt that David made a reference to Adam and Eve not realizing "Eve was framed' is already a direct reference.

Aaron's call is very depressing. It reminds me of when my Muslim friends that tell me that no matter what evidence is presented, they will never allow themselves to stop believing. Hmm, self-lobotomisation --- sounds heavenly. In a recent random conversation with a local Christian (probably in her late 50s, presents herself as a fairly well-to-do and intelligent person), I was waxing lyrical on the importance of reading at least one novel per year. She was seemingly nodding and smiling agreement, so I asked what her favourite novel is. She suddenly became awkward, eyes glazed over, a blank pause and finally she quietly responded: "I only read Christian literature."
Alexander, I stopped a stranger from inflicting serious harm on another person. He was momentarily furious. I yelled at him from a distance, and he froze. He was about to smash another guy's head with a rock the size of a basketball. The other guy, unaware of the whole situation, went inside a coffee shop.
After he froze, he began to melt down and had trouble breathing. I went over and gave him some water. I told him he made a good choice not going through with it. Then he started shaking and crying, thanking me for stopping him. He went from being a furious man to a helpless teenager who was about to ruin his life. I think there's a chance he has similar thoughts about the event and my involvement. There was no God to intervene, only a humanist and an atheist with proper experience in crisis situations-and a bit of luck. On that day, countless other people ruined their or someone else's lives, and God didn't stop them.

As a gay man, growing up in the fifties and sixties, i was subjected to severe mind games, especially from my parents...who insisted i marry and give them grandchildren, as if i was intentionally trying to harm their lives. Its really annoying when theists turn up with their C game and hope to place their incoherent, unsupported and fallacious argument to a veteran speaker who has been doing this for 20 yrs and then have the temerity to think they will succeed.

In regards to the example of god saving 3 kids out of 45 in a bus crash, when I've mentioned that sort of thing to my Christian husband, he was angry with me. On Matt's point in Aaron's call about why he's able to keep doing it. Sure, it's because it's important. But he's also incredibly good at it, and he constantly get that affirmation from others which encourages him to continue doing it. We all want to be doing things we know and get told we are very good at.
In all the years that Matt has been doing this, has any caller ever come close to providing a cogent argument?
It seems to be the same frustrating conversation over and over again. And it has to be that way because none of these callers have a chance of demonstrating something for which there is no evidence.
It's more for the listeners
In previous years there have been callers who have brought matt to a standstill because they made an unfalsifiable claim that they also couldn't prove right, that's the closest.

I increasingly feel like Matt is like those college professors who've gotten so deep into their academic echo chambers that they can't comprehend that their least informed level of discourse is still far above the average person's understanding.
In this conversation, you're speaking with someone whose primary language is German and who acknowledged a communication barrier. Instead of being pedantic about word selection, you could "extend the olive branch" by confirming you understood his intention before critiquing his word choice. He even apologized for misspeaking, but you were so busy nitpicking that you didn't acknowledge it. This would have been a perfect moment to move on, but instead, the conversation became more toxic and hostile.
I genuinely want to like Matt, but his antagonistic attitude is off-putting. While there are times it’s warranted, in this instance, it exacerbated an already challenging conversation due to the communication barrier.

Good duo here. Got a good cop bad cop vibe. I do find it very frustrating how often people interrupt the hosts and I've noticed the women always get interrupted more. Eve trying to get a word in was like pulling teeth with some calls. I feel like the hosts need to call that shit out. I rmember a show with Eve and Arden and it was a nightmare.
