- If you're selling products or services in person you need a way to accept credit card payments on your mobile phone. Paypal Here is not as common as Square card reader when it comes to in-person credit card payments, but both are pretty similar. So, what's the difference between the two? In this video, I share some of the major differences between Paypal Here vs Square Card Reader and their fees.

I have recently launched a tourism business. I have ordered T-Shirts for a festival coming up and needed a card reader. I just ordered the Paypal card reader because I have a Paypal business account. This video was very helpful. As I was stuck trying to choose for my business. Seems Square is easier to deal with customer service wise.
Im getting back into my craft business, and have been confused on which one, this past weekend I lost out on 2 good sales because I did not have this! So I must update my life! lol I already have pay pal, and some ppl have said they dont care for it, but I just want something SIMPLE that works well for starting out. Your Video Helps! Thank You!!

Thanks so much. All these prices are higher in "Rip off Britain" but the rest of the info is a GREAT help.
Susan Maris You got it Susan! Glad it was helpful. I guess I hadn’t considered the tatted in other countries and how out could be much higher. That sucks it’s not a more universal rate but I understand with different laws and currency exchange.

Sooooo Ms D., Why was this in my recommended? 🤣🤣 this video was great and I would LOVE to hear your take on payment options 2 years later.
Lol Been creating a long time.
I would say the same basic rules still apply, ease of use to the customer so it’s painless for them to do business with you and integrations and efficiencies for the user. At least to start with.

Did you get a new lens? This is one of your best looking videos yet. Good info too.
Thank you! Man, the struggle has been real trying to find my style & color for video in the office! The biggest difference is REAL daylight! I shot this on the Canon M50 and just used daylight and the Faithful picture profile, no tweaks, no changes, no luts, just real sunlight. As far as depth of field - kit lens lol I've been working with it and getting great results image and video wise in my tests and today was the first real video putting it all together. Did a project with the same settings and that sunlight can't be matched lol
Might be time to upgrade the lighting setup in the office. Feel free to hit me up for budget friendly lighting advice. It's kind of becoming my thing.
Yeah man! I picked up the VILTROX L116T that Jason Vong suggested to get some dimmable lights action in the office and they're bi-colored as well which is a plus. I have two softbox lights already in that I've been testing out bouncing the light so it not just direct daylight temperature on me but it tis a pickle. Whatever suggestions you have I'll definitely check it out! Great job on your light video by the way! Saw DSLR Video Shooter drop that mention in his community tab, solid video sir!
Thanks! Great video!

This is Fantastic!
Thank you!
Thanks, that helped. And thank you for talking about fees! I have used Square for employers but it’s so different when YOUR paying the fees! I have to have to really think about those fees. I lost $10 on one client 😅
My pleasure! I always assess the fees based on if it’s worth it or not to the business. If we’re going to bring in the money necessary in a consistent flow fees become less of an issue because the sales justify the expense.
Diana Gladney - EntreWoman TV wow no ones ever replied to me before. A agree it’s just something else to consider.
Caitie C Wow! I’m sorry to hear that. I usually work to reply and help as many as I can. Glad I could help!
Hm. I no longer run a personal business but every so often I do sell old gear or do a one-off job for someone. One of these could come in handy.
Not sure how I missed your comment but yeah, I love keeping one of these on hand if needing to sell something in person. Depending on where you bank they often times have their own device that can connect to your account. Still not a bad idea to keep tossed into a bag for business.
Thanks.. appreciate the info
My pleasure!
Thanks i learned something. I wanna know more about the square..
Okay awesome! I'll definitely consider adding it to the list of upcoming videos! Thanks for your comment!
I use Venmo and PayPal Here. Love Venmo, super easy.
I just go the PayPal for my business, now I have to figure out how to do taking cards over the phone. Do you have a video for that?
Good info thanks
My pleasure!!
Hey great video I like and subbed. I just opened up a food truck. Does square seem like the best option for me? 90% of purchases are under $20. You killin it girl much respect for your entrepreneurship. Thank you for the info 🙏
Thank you! Congratulations on the new business! From my experience, Square in the preferred option in St. Louis for nearly all of the food trucks that I've been to or seen. We have a lot of food truck events here in the city. I think when you're on the go, familiarity of the customer is what makes them more likely to buy. They know what the receipt and transaction process is already like, so they don't feel leery of buying from a new truck - as long as the food looks and smells good lol. Once you've had a solid 90 days or so, I'd see what your average monthly transactions are because it may be more beneficial to switch to the monthly fee schedule vs per transaction. I hope your truck does really well!
Diana Gladney - EntreWoman TV awesome thank you so much for the advice. I’m going to do the per transaction for now and just charge a 2.7% fee for using a card on top of my price to cover it. So for example a mahi wrap will be $10 for cash tax included. I think this is my best option or just do a flat .25 cent for use of a card. Plus I still have to pay sales tax and that high fee is really going to eat into my profit. Once again thank you, I’m in a rather small town compared to St. Louis and there’s only about 6 real deal food trucks in brevard county Florida. We’ll be mainly near Kennedy space center where the rockets launch. There’s so many big companies we can do lunch for instead of posting up somewhere. Tomorrow is our soft opening with our full menu. Wish us luck.
Good luck on the new opening. One piece of advice, don't vary the prices. Just have one set price no matter the payment method. Especially if you're going to office lunch spots. It only takes one negative review/conversation in an office to decide if they'll come check out your truck or not. If the quality is there, just charge a higher price regardless of cash or card because more as more people aren't carrying cash. Much success to your new business!
Diana Gladney - EntreWoman TV I’ll keep that in mind. Thanks
Thank you so much for help .
My pleasure!
Very intriguing thx

Juliana Flores My pleasure!! Glad it helped!
I am so glad that I came across your channel! I am starting a business in skincare. Which company would you recommend?
Glad you're here! I personally preferred Paypal since I use them in other areas of my business. If you're starting a skincare business I would consider all you plan to offer service and/or product wise and see which user interface you prefer. If you plan to do a ton of in person sales the kiosk setup you can do with square might work better. If more service based you may want to look at Paypal.
@@DianaGladney
Yes, starting out it will be more service base like, facials, peels etc.. You just don't know how much this means to me. Me finding you, your channel was nothing but Divine in my eyes because it has been a little challenging for me, starting a business an doing EVERYTHINGbon your own, because you have to save as much money. Alongng with being a caregiver for my father, so thank you!! Now I am working on trying to maybe create a small but nice and professional website LOl..but again thanks! 😊👑
@@DianaGladney
So basically all I need to do is go on the PayPal website and request for the credit card reading chip? Thanks
Yep pretty much. I would also make sure you have a PayPal business account vs ac regular papal account setup first of you don't already.
My pleasure helping! I know ALL this frustrations you're dealing with! I went through the same thing myself! If you have any questions or video requests on something you're having a hard time with just let me know!
I used Square at my book signing last month and they sent a debit card....How can I upload my book payments on the Square Debit Card?
First of all, Congratulation on your book and your book sales! That's awesome!!
If their debit card is anything like the Paypal Business Debit Card you should be able to access your funds that are within your Square account directly by using the card. I would log into square on desktop and check your dashboard for more options that what the phone app offers and hopefully if your bank acct and all that is already linked you should be able to manage your stuff from there.
I haven't used square in years, but I'll have to take a look and see what they've changed. I primarily use Paypal so I don't have to use Square anymore.

Excellent information but hard to hear you with the background music.
Nice video Diana! I went to your channel and searched for Payment GateWay and did not find anything.
Unfortunately, I don't cover small business finance tips any longer so there won't be any updated video around this topic.
@@DianaGladney Thanks for quick response
Sure thing!
With the magstripe reader like the one she has for square would you be able to charge chipped cards? Sorry if she explained it in the video I didn’t hear it
Never knew PayPal had a card reader thanks
Sure thing! I liked that you can image checks and just enter card numbers. Pretty cool stuff!
very helpful
I'm glad it was!
Thank you.

hey there. I recently bought a square. but am from the Caribbean.. will I be able to use it Internationally
I would imagine so but I'd check their website for details on something like that.
Can you do a video on how to chose the best bank for your business ex; i have a service based business hair and makeup and I’ve been in the market trying to find a good bank to set up a business account
Great Idea! I can add that video to do next in a new business builders series I'm currently recording and since you asked, I'll move that video to the top of the list! Thanks for the great suggestion!
Finally got the video uploaded, here it is! ua-cam.com/video/o0i_DbhS7Gc/v-deo.html
I actually HAVE a square and ive beem sp nervous to use it! Im so glad i found your video. Thanks!
That's so awesome, thank you! I'm glad the video was helpful for you. I'm curious, what type of things do you sell?
@@DianaGladney actually i actively sell handcrafted items like jewelry, crochet items and seasonally decorative pieces, usually for a porch or patio! I am getting into using my new designncut and i also sew haha! Each craft is geared towards a seasonal niche. More crochet in the fall/winter, then sewn items in the spring/summer! Im just starting to take up an online precense and getting into more and more venue events.
Wow that's so cool! The only stitch I remember is a running stitch lol That's the best I have lol
Lol not “Jesse Louise” lol
Let’s say I have more than one item for sale. Would I be able to label and price those along with my other items or would I have to make them all the same price?
I honestly don't know how the interface is currently setup hut it shouldn't be too different. On square you could setup the item and set the price for different prices. You'd have to check it out to see exactly how it may be setup currently.
can you use these card readers outside the US? So let's say you're currently not in the US but do sell your stuff can you bring it with you?
Great question! I'm sure with PayPal since it's a global company that you can use that just about anywhere and probably because your account is still hooked into wherever your origin state or origin country is I'm sure that it wouldn't be a problem as far as Square I don't know you probably have to go on their website and do a little bit of research to see how that may work with them.
Hi Diana... Thanks for sharing this with us.
I just created an account on PayPal and want to accept debit and credit card payments... so I have 2 doubts: 1. Should the buyer have a PayPal account? 2. Can I use the Paypal or the Square devices indistinctly?
My pleasure Mario!
So, no, they can't be used interchangeably. They only work with their respective apps to connect to each specific account you have with their processing systems.
Also, when someone is purchasing an item or service from you using these systems, they do not need to have a Paypal account. It's the same like when you go to a store and make any purchase, no accounts required on the buyers end.
I already suspected it, but now I'm sure, thank you for your kind support.@@DianaGladney
Tha k you for the video. I think many ppl are used to seeing the square reader so the PayPal reader might look kind of fishy :)
Yeah, I guess it's just about letting them know the service you're using but I think more people are hooked into using Square now.
I use the PayPal card reader when I sell CDs on location
That's awesome! Do you find you have more people wanting to pay cash or with cards when they're in person?
Do they have the option for recurring charges? For recurring monthly services. Do they hold the CC information and to auto charge?
Last I checked, no they do not. This is more for transactions at the point of sale. You’d need a service that does allow you to setup recurring accounts.
"You can charge those off at the end of the year, and theres an ant on my camera."
😂
Can I swap a card using the Square card reader but be logged into PayPal app? Will it work or do I need to buy both card readers?
Each card reader connects to its respective app only. If you want to use both, you would need each card reader. It would be cool if there was a universal card reader though.
The only bad thing is on the weekends with square u wont get paid plus the bank can't even see it because Square still has it so it's not like it's pending in your bank account it's not even showing up and then the next business day when it's a Monday at all be in there it's kind of weird I havent had anybody say they gotten instant deposit it offers it but I haven't heard of anybody saying that they get instant deposit only one I know that's instant deposit is venmo but not everybody has a venmo account
Yeah, that's true. I'm not sure if that's been or going to be improved but it'd sure be nice. At least with Paypal you can access your funds much faster.
How do you get the paypal card reader for free? I see nothing about a free one on the paypal website. Only ones you can purchase.
Unfortunately, it looks like Paypal no longer offers you the card reader for free. If you decided to use it, the only recourse would be it's a tax-deductible expense if you plan to use it for business.
Hi, Thanks for an educational video. Are the charges of 2.75% on Paypal and 2.7% on Square, per month or per transaction? Thanks in advance..
Glad you enjoyed the video! I'd suggest checking their websites for the most recent and accurate fees.
Diana Gladney - EntreWoman TV your not helpful why be a UA-camr about information then

Thank you so much for the video. I was tore between the two platforms before your video. However, I am starting a foundation that is not for profit and feel like I may need to offer both. Do you know if I can use either reader with each one? Meaning if I plug in the square reader will it also do PayPal if I log into their site?
I have never tried both at the same time. I can't see needing both, even for an organization. I would look into the specific non profit accounts or rate discounts for nonprofits before just getting one on a regular business account.
What is the other payment method "gateway" for service providers? Can u pls link it :)
Nothing I'd honestly recommend which is why I didn't name-drop it in the video. A quick Google search on that phrase (payment gateway) though will give you more recent options to probably consider, if not another UA-cam video covering some comparisons.
Does anyone know if you can use either paypal here or square to get pymts if you are in an area of no cell/wifi service?
Ooo that’s a toughie! You at least want some cell coverage because that’s how it processes and authorizes the payment. If you’re in an area without coverage I don’t think it would work.
We are a doggie bakery and I have been invited to do a trade show for free. So, I have been looking into, which card reader would be my best option. In terms of phones is there any one type of smartphone that works best with these card readers. I am strictly an Apple iPhone girl here because I find it to be much more ADHD friendly. I have the iPhone 7 & 8 plus so I am wondering how they would work since they don't have the headset plug-in. Thank you for your video it was very well done. Pretty Paws Gourmet Bakery
That's awesome, congrats on the trade show invite and I love the idea of a doggie bakery! Can't say I've heard that one before lol. I only have an LG and iPhone 6 and both have headphone ports so I'm not sure how well it might work with a dongle. I haven't ever personally seen one used that way. The good news is they do have one specifically for iPhones with the lightning port instead of a headphone jack. I'd just get that one vs a dongle since Apple probably won't be adding the headphone port to any future models.
You can get that one on their site, just scroll to the far right and you'll see it.

Best of luck at the trade show!
PayPal has a new reader that is Blue Tooth enabled that will accept a mag stripe card or a chip card, the cost is $25.. check out the PayPal video on that device for more info..

Hey hey!! What's going on Mychal!! Waiting for that next video to drop!
I do craft shows. Basically a hobby business. Do I need a business license to get a PayPal business account? Thank you
You'll probably want to reach out to an accountant or tax professional for help with that.
Lol lol there’s an Ant on my camera..... lol
Man! You'd think I was some kind of Snow White with a wasp that wanted to hang out on the table while I recorded, an ant on the camera, and one on my pants from the bench smh lol geeze louise!
Diana Gladney - EntreWoman TV lol I feel you it’s pretty hot this summer all over. From NYC to LA. and it is NOT..... the bees knees.
You really should call your boy so we can laugh about some stuff......lol
Ive used PayPal for a while.. so they throw in a swipe fee on top of the final sale fee??
You’ll have to check their website for their latest pricing structure and fee schedule.
I have read bad reviews about both companies holding your money and closing your account for no reason. What do you think?
Yeah I've definitely seen my fair share of bad reviews. I look for a few validation points because nearly every major bank or credit card provider is in the same boat with bad reviews. I look for the ability to have real time chat and phone customer service and how well the integration and deposit time frame is with my bank and make sure your business model is aligned with their terms and agreements. Who knows all the fine details of anyone's specific issue of why something happens but if it meets my requirements, that's all I care about.
Yes PayPal is horrible, I’ve been dealing with them since 2014 and had the PayPal reader since then. Randomly they will block your account and you will have to give them details of the transactions
any monthly fees??? Does it cost anything if not used for few months??
Nope! If you're just using it for your business and let's say you do have down periods where you're not using it, neither one will charge you a monthly fee for basic uses at all. You'd specifically have to sign up for a higher tiered business accounts or apply for one before you enable one of the monthly fee options.
So if we dont want to owe so much come tax season what do you recommend?
I’d say educate yourself on the specifics for your niche of business and the tax advantages legally available to you and hire help like a specific account that’s knowledgeable about your friends and small/home based businesses specifically so they can help you. Then pay what’s required for your taxed like normal but you’ll know what and how much of what you’re actually parting vs guessing. Just hire a professional that can help you, it’ll be worth the investment vs guessing at what to do,
@@DianaGladney thank you☺
You’re welcome!
It says of you sell more than $500 in a month they hold the money for 30 days.. 😞
You may want to clarify how that works with customer service. Most business finance accounts have some gold process in place on new accounts to protect against potential illegal practices. Those are usually avoidable when you meet certain standards. Most banks have sinve type of hold on large transactions unless you meet whatever requirements. Just get clarification on that one.
I just started up my food truck and I use PayPal
That's awesome! I love finding new food trucks!
What I've found is that Square is actually really cool if you have one because you can setup your menu online via Square and have people place orders in advance of your truck showing up so you have orders ready right before you arrive. I always thought that was pretty neat.
Does the free paypal reader get chip?
I’m not sure if they are currently, you’ll have to check their website and see if they offer the card reader for chips for free. When I saw it last, you needed to pay for an advanced card reader.
do they calculate sales tax for you?
I don't recall but I believe you can adjust it if you want to include it or not.
How about big amounts? Like 10k?
You’d have to check the current transaction limits on their site for something like that.
I need help
Help with what specifically?
You Have Nice Skin
Thanks!
For me that's a $43 - $80 fee. Dang
Tony Bruno Yeah that’s tough! You might want to look into a corporate account or just pay monthly. If the business justifies the expense, that may be the best way to handle it. Hope you find a happy medium fee wise!
