This weekend, we are celebrating Dragon Boat Festival 端午節 2020 in TAIWAN! We are going to learn about the traditions, the boat racing and of course, the quintessential food which is the ZONGZI (Glutinous Rice Dumplings).
Dragon Boat Festival occurs on the 5th day of the 5th month on the Lunar Calendar. It is considered an unlucky time of year, and many of the traditions stem from the superstitions surrounding illnesses, dangerous animals and evil spirits. That includes hanging Calamus and Wormwood on doors. It is also said that the Dragon Boat Festival honours the poet Qu Yuan that died by drowning. Villagers raced out onto river in Dragon Boats to try and save him, and threw the zongzi into the water in hopes that the fish would eat the zongzi rather than Qu Yuan.
We are taking you to Tainan for the celebrations, and you’ll see that even restaurants and stalls are serving zongzi for the holiday! We will be walking you through what is used to make zongzi, how they are cooked, and then we will be visiting two restaurants - one that is the oldest zongzi restaurant, and the most popular zongzi restaurant, to try their specialities. We also witnessed some traditional dances and song on the side of the road!
The 8 Treasure Dumpling was made with mushrooms, chestnuts, fish, pork, scallops, sakura shrimp and rice (100 NTD / USD 3.39). The regular dumpling contained tender pork and was covered in gravy (40 NTD / USD 1.35), and the peanut zongzi is a great vegetarian option with soft peanuts, gravy and peanut powder (35 NTD / USD 1.18).
After eating, we went to Anping Canal in Tainan to watch the Dragon Boat races. The boats are very long and decorated with beautiful paintings and ornaments. The races are exhilarating and the crowds cheer for their favourite teams. At the festival, we also saw tons of street food stalls selling traditional Taiwanese street foods. A food that we could not resist was the Indigenous BBQ. The grill is HUGE and is swinging/rotating like a pendulum over wood fire. The stall was serving Wild Boar pork belly and sausage. We ordered pork belly which was seasoned in Taiwanese spices (100 NTD / USD 3.39). What a great way to end a day of celebrating!!!

Miss Taiwan, and 綜子so much! Greetings from a Taiwanese in Canada!
And great videos! 👍
Hope you can have a zongzi soon!
是“粽子”
I miss Taiwan so much. The last time I saw the Dragon Boat Festival was in 2001 (my first time to Taiwan). The peanut zongzi and the sweet ones are so good. While I love all Taiwanese food,, Southern Taiwanese food in general has a reputation for being better than Northern Taiwanese food, particularly in Tainan.
Life here in Taiwan is safe and worry free. Food are so yummy and awesome!❤🇹🇼👍🏻
ua-cam.com/video/0B5qtc7uNt8/v-deo.html Welcome to Taiwan
So cool that you have all these cultures living in one grand city sharing their cultures with everyone and seemingly coexisting together without issue at least for what you show, let’s hope that is the way it is. Because that is how it Should Be!♥️♥️♥️
I remembered when i subscribe when you guys were at 20,000 now you guys are almost at 1 million wow congrats. Awesome video guys.
Thanks for the support!
@@LukeMartin Your welcome
That's inspirational to me :)
Luke, the difference in the zongzi coverings is one is made from bamboo leaves, the darker spotted one is made from the sheaths of bamboo shoots, also called "shells". Sometimes you'll see them with a covering that is grayish-green/brown and has lots of leaf veins, and that is lotus leaf. It has a distinctive smell and flavor.
Hi Luke, there are different styles of Zongzi in Taiwan. The southern style is cooked in boiled water and the northern style is steamed. They are quite different in terms of taste. Great video. Keep up with the great work.
one of these days, I'll love to go back to Taiwan. It's been almost 20 years.
Wow! Hopefully that day comes sooner than later!
I'll be following behind you. Haha.
Gorgeous video!! Hope you and Sabrina have a wonderful day
Hey Luke and Sabrina. Always looking forward to your food tours
You guys are absolutely making me wish I were in Taiwan now
We should go together and mukbang at all the restaurants there!
Oh, Gracious, as always it looks so good!! I am a big fan of Pork Belly!! Thanks
Wow, that looks really great ! Taiwan is just the most amazing place for street markets, I wish I was there right now. Are you in Taiwan at the moment Luke ? Or was this filmed in "pre Corona times" ?
Yes we are in Taiwan right now!
Wow! Amazing zongzhi factory 😍.... My all-time favorite Taiwanese food 😍
Nice! Thanks for watching!
I could eat 粽子 every day!! That probably would not healthy though. 😂 I'd love to be there for all the traditions celebrated in Taiwan! Someday... ❤
Luke & Sabrina I absolutely love all your videos! Keep enjoying the yummy food!
Thanks so much!!
Zong zhi is amazing!! Thank you again for shining a light on taiwan!!
Our pleasure! We love Taiwan!
Thank guys for showing us another experience of Taiwanese cuisine and part of its culture. Rice fillings look delicious. The images of the boat race on the Tainan Canal are wonderful. The BBQ is already on another level.✌
It's not junk it's Chang I think.... cheers
It's not junk it's Chang dumplings..... cheers

I made 粽子with my late mother more than 3 decades ago before I came to the US. Your videos remind me a lot of my growing-up on the island. You two did great researches and editings on these informative videos. Keep up good works. I believe you will break 1 mill viewers soon. 👨👨👧👧👩👩👦

So fun to watch!
Taiwanese food is the best in the world.
Indian
Icelandic
Think we would really like the scallop too!
居然知道拍阿娟!厲害!
台南要成為國際城市了!連賣粽子的小姊姊英文都那麼遛!
台灣幾乎是雙語!
Great video and enjoyable episode. I wish if I could give a 1000 like. Looking forward for the next one
Thank you very much for the kind words!
Thank you for taking us to the Dragon boat festival. Belated wishes to Taiwan from India. I liked the 8 treasure Zongzi and hopefully I could get to taste it in the future when I visit Taiwan which probably should be during the dragon boat festival :)
Funny. When you mentioned the pendulum grill I was reminded that we have exactly the same kind of setup here in Germany. The small State of Saarland has the so-called "Schwenk Grill", also a round grill over charcoal or an open fire. Schwenken is to turn around or swing. How funny that 2 cultures from opposite ends of the world have similar traditions.
So much good Taiwanese food.
Oh yeah! Taiwan's full of delicious eats.
Wonderful video! Thank you for share your experience with me.
Beautiful place 🥰
Thank you
Lol one zongzi is all you really need because that stuff is so dense. While I don't really eat carbs I still maintain my mom makes the best :) She makes both savory and sweet ones every Duanwu holiday.
Yes its seriously filling stuff haha
Hi Luke Martin, There are two types of meat rice dumplings in Taiwan. They are southern rice dumplings and northern rice dumplings. Southern rice dumplings are made by boiling raw rice with water, while northern rice dumplings are fried with raw rice and then steamed. You are eating southern rice dumplings this time. The next time you have the opportunity, you should try northern rice dumplings. It is definitely a different flavour and you will like it as well. I wish you enjoy your life in Taiwan (Ilha Formosa). Besides, all my foreign friends come from different countries in Canada. They like you videos very much.
Hi friends I am arina this video is really very nice dishes was looking very testy 😋 i really enjoy this video 👍👌👌
Thanks Arina!
The dragon boat festival is now observed in the major cities all over the world. I am sure they have that in Toronto and Vancouver.
Now I know the Taiwan used peanuts in ZongZi-Tamales for Mexican where Canton used mung beans more instead.
My favorite 😍
Really better then I have ever eat, actually I am not the fan of ZONGZI, But I realy like and have the desire suddenly want ot eat just in TAIWAN.
Wow, Zongzi festival is celebrated with full of festivity in Taiwan. We have the dumplings being sold several days before the festival in the Chinatown areas in Malaysia but the festival is rather quiet here. We have several types of dumpling and the most popular type is similar to the regular dumpling that you show in the video.
I love my hometown-Tainan.
The food paradise!
Soooooo hungry!!! Man always looks grest.
Thanks for watching!
Hi Luke and Sabrina. Thanks for sharing the story of Dragon Boat Festival . I am glad you guy had a lot of fun at the Dragon Boat Festival and try the Zongzi. I love Zongzi and I make my own at home . You got to try the Zongzi from Malaysia , Singapore and Brunei, there are the Best. Totally different from Taiwan.
We would definitely love to try different variations of the zongzi and even homemade versions! Thanks Jacinta!
Hi guys good morning enjoy the festival and yummy foods stay safe thanks.
Good morning, thanks so much for watching. Take care!
Nice trip
Best wishes channel onwer MR luke martin dont stop very nice movie thank you god bless you we always like your Followers and your channel

Nice!
SALUDOS DESDE MI PAÍS CHILE 🇨🇱🇨🇱 💓 EN CUARENTENA POR COVID-19
I love this girl.
I live in Tainan and those ZongZi store in this video are really famous. I see a huge line of people buying EVERYDAY.
The lines were insane!
Wow amazing
I also like zongzi with peanut powder .
Yum!
some of them use shell ginger(月桃) leaf for packaging , like 2:40
It brings different flavor compare to bamboo leaf.
We call it Bakcang .. Is very very delicious 👍
Taiwanese too .
You guys have been in Taiwan long enough that if you haven't already done so, I think it's time to start picking up some Taiwanese. Starting with zongzi, called ba-chang (it's closer to ba-zhang). I didn't even know it was Hokkien until friends later pointed it out to me.
Oh..you guys should try rouzao ice cream and the stinky tofu sausage. It's across the street from one of the exits of the Chihkan Tower.
15:57 Surely these guys win every time. I don't think I can run that fast!
great video thank you for sharing
Just as a reminder for anyone who goes to eat ZongZi: Make sure you don't over-eat. Glutenous rice is quite filling and hard to digest so it's advisable to watch your portion and eat cautiously. There are cases where some older people got sent to hospital because of indigestion.
Good luck bro😊
I'm surprised not everyone is wearing masks, is that because the rate of infection is so low in Taiwan and they track and monitor cases? I miss Tainan, such a wonderful city with so much to offer! I never saw the dragon boat festival, it looks very exciting and the food is making me hungry!
Taiwan handled the situation very well and there hasn't been any local transmission in a long time. Out in public where there is lots of distance, I would say 60% of people wear masks.
I really miss Taiwan specially the chamg su we called it sometimes ma chang
Thumbs up for the chocolate bar. Rule number 1, never buy chocolate during summertime in Taiwan :D
Hahaha lesson learnt
Interesting the Cantonese are very different in wrapping technique and ingredients.
I saw half of your stuff already and your voices are lower than the background music. I tried with the TV speakers, external speakers, amplifier and speakers, and it's always the same. I set my volume based on your voice, and when some music starts it's way too load. Probably it's a video strategy/method to attract attention. But i hate it as I have to constantly adjust the volume. keep up the good work. Good luck.
Kerala, India, which has a lot of cultural and lifestyle influences of ancient China also has an annual boat race. Just fyi.
Very nice countrY
看完你們的影片才發現台北越來越沒有過節的氣氛
(19:09) Only with peanut powder, it makes rice dumpling become the real Taiwanese southern style.
I only seen that on liziqi and Dianxi
Finally i now i know its name ZONGZI glad to know its types and texture taste and belief and tradition about that Food
One of Zongzi look a heavy meal
BE SAFE ALWAYS LUKE&SABRINA
Glad you learned something :)
@@LukeMartin your vlogg is mouth watering with diff kinds of food and cuisine
At the same time you guys are feeding our brains with knowledge
Did you have to be quarantined when you entered Taiwan? Is the restriction lifted yet?
Never had Taiwan Zongzi before.. looks good... we have few variations of Bak Chang here & doesn’t come with any sauce or broth
Would like to try them some time!
Zongzi in Indonesia we call it Bacang but in small size with basic flavour, the ingridient just some meats n vegetables...
usually eat for breakfast with snack Keripik/Peyek without sauce
Would love to try the Indonesian Bacang
I think those peyek is a cultural mixed with Javanese.
The bundle of plants are to ward off mosquitoes and flies, because they're the carrier of malaria and cholera in the summertime. In the evening we would boil water with those plants for a hot bath, damn, I miss its unusual aroma.
its not bamboo leaves , its lotus leaves. anyway awesome video
Wow😍🤤
gila2 boom boom sekarang mainnya sama om andre
nice video
My Hometown! The jongzi in southern Taiwan is the best!
Yes we love them in the South!
NO ESTAN EN CUARENTENA?? NO VI A NADIE CON MASCARILLA??
please do a video on teppanyaki
New viddddd 😁
Zoogzi is the Chinese traditional fast food. In ancient time, those who wanted for a scholar test in the emperor city would bring these zoongzi as food on their way. Please don’t eat too much because it is made out of sticky rice (sweet rice). You’ll feel too full later. :) :)
Zongzi👌
অসাধারণ ভিডিও
Thank you very much!
interesting
Is it just the elders with the traditions, or do the younger people observe them?
I think people of all ages participate
They really loaded up that raw garlic on top
Oh yes!
Tainan anping....😊
☺️
Zongzi is delicious, add soy sauce & hot sauce.
So good!
Did you guys just eat Zongzi the whole day
Can you please let me know when Taiwan border open for Canadians? I don’t want to go under 2 weeks quarantine when I’m back to Canada.😔😔😔
Luke, wife and I love your channel and Vlog. One question though? Why do you just introduce yourself at the beginning of each episode? Isn’t Sabrina as equally important in the operation of your channel? Just a thought...maybe it’ll be worthwhile to introduce Sabrina at the beginning of each episode as well. After all, there is no I in Team!
