  • Part 1 of a 2-part series. Camping in Bellinzona.
Bellinzona is the capital of Ticino, the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland and lies in a valley on the south side of the Alps.
The mountains above Bellinzona are steep and rugged and have several old stone villages and hamlets including Curzútt and San Defendente. The 11th century Church of San Bernárd lies above Curzútt with its frescoes by Cristoforo and Nicolao da Seregno.
The Tibetan Bridge "Carasc" crosses the Sementina River gorge to link the hamlet of Monte Carasso and Sementina. The bridge is 270m long and is 150m above the valley floor.
The hiking trail starts in Monte Carasso and ascends steeply to the hamlet of Curzútt. Alternatively you can take the funicular for this section. Following this the trail leads past the church of San Bernárd and along a stone path to the bridge itself. From here you can cross back and return via Curzútt, with or without the funicular, or continue along the hiking trail through the hamlets of Sementina, visiting San Defendente along the way and descending into Sementina to complete the loop.
In total, the walk is around 9km and ascends and descends around 960m. The funicular covers around 350m of that.
Here is a nice video of the making of the bridge: • "Carasc" Tibetan Bridg...

Questa é la mia terra, ma dopo così tanti anni che non ci ero stato, non mi ricordavo che era così bella. Il Ponte Tibetano non c'era ancora. Bel video. Grazie.
