    Something you don’t see in these highlights is how Manning was infamous for calling audibles - that is, using his code words at the line of scrimmage to change the play that the coach sent in, based on how he sees the defense setting up. He had more discretion to do that than probably any other QB, and he did it so much people could get quite annoyed at how much time he’d spend doing it, barking out the play call for as long as the play clock limit would allow, over and over again. He was known as being the closest thing to a “coach on the field” as there has been in modern football.

      His football IQ was legendary. You could never pull the same defensive trick on him twice. I don't recall who specifically, but there was a D-coordinator that set up a plan for Manning to force a pick, and it took THREE QUARTERS to set up. Never worked on him again.

      Btw that’s an American idiom that comes from football - “to call an audible”.
      Like, “You said you were going THIS, why the hell did you do THAT instead?”
      “Oh, well, that was my plan but at the last minute I called an audible!”

    Something that highlights won't show you about Peyton is how smart he was. He had a crazy ability to read defenses and call out the other team's plays. He was basically a second offensive coordinator on your team. He was not just a hall of fame QB but also possibly the greatest student of the game that we've ever seen.

    The thing I think that made Peyton Manning so deadly was his play fakes. He was able to hide the ball so well after a fake handoff that the safety’s bit and he was able to go right over the top. He created so much separation with the fake handoff and the pump fake. He was incredibly accurate too which helps. Dude just had it all

    • @gregcable3250
      @gregcable3250 9 місяців тому

      He was as good at the play fakes as just about anyone. The old school guys worked on it alot--Unitas, Starr, then later Bradshaw, Stabler, K. Anderson, then Marino was also very good at it. Seems like a bit of a lost art or maybe the plays that require it aren't as common with exception of the RPO stuff.

    Manning was criticized for being too old to play. He had "retired" from the Colts after playing for them for 14 seasons, only to come out of retirement to play another 4 seasons for the Broncos.
    Manning is also a beloved TV personality, having made several TV commercial appearances. His wholesome persona and wry comedic style makes him a very endearing character. One of my favorite commercials with him is an old ad for Mastercard.
    ua-cam.com/video/OEeK7OH6kXc/v-deo.html
    Some other famous QB to wide receiver duos are:
    Joe Montana to Jerry Rice
    Dan Marino to Mark Clayton/Mark Duper
    John Elway to Rod Smith
    Jim Kelly to Andre Reed
    Ben Roethlisberger to Antonio Brown

    • @Austin.Kilgore
      @Austin.Kilgore Рік тому +1

      He didn’t retire and it wasn’t because he was too old. He had a neck surgery and was believed he’d never be able to throw a ball again, so colts chose to release him and draft Andrew Luck. Then Manning went through intense physical therapy and signed with broncos where he amazingly played for another 4 seasons, where he eventually retired but it was the 1 and only time he retired.

    Yes. Sometimes you go down in bounds to kill the clock to win the game. Most teams want to win the game with the ball in their possession. So sliding was a good thing for them.

      Let me add to the fact that the opposing team should have no timeouts left to stop the clock. Kneeling the ball minimize the mistakes that can happen trying to score or your defense make once the opposing offense takes the field.

    For my money Peyton is the best quarterback of all time. Their are guys with stronger arms, guys who could scramble and run faster, but no one was better at playing quarterback. Peyton was a coach on the field, he knew where every player was on the field and where they were going to be. He knew what the defense was trying to do to him and he knew what to do in order to counter it. Peyton would call 2 plays in the hudle and then get up to the line....and that's when he would start to work. He would take a look at the defense and instantly realize what they were trying to do. He would then start to audible. First he would make his line calls, moving up and down the line of scrimmage yelling orders to his offensive lineman, setting the protection required. Once the protection was set he would signal out to his revievers "Omaha! Omaha!" Grabbing his face mask and signaling to the "hot receiver" he would then turn to his back, moving him around. The defense would be shuffling all over the place trying to keep up with Peytons calls, the cat and mouse game was on. Those fast-twitch decisions made him a 14-time Pro Bowler, seven-time first-team All-Pro, five-time NFL MVP and two-time Super Bowl champion
    At the time of his retirement, Manning, held NFL records for passing touchdowns (539), passing yards (71,940) and quarterback starts won by his team (186, tied with Brett Favre).His single-season records of 5,477 yards passing and 55 touchdowns, set in 2013 with Denver still stand. That year the Broncos set a record for most points in a season (606).

    As a Patriots fan, I *hated* Peyton, specifically because he was such a problem to play against. There were several years of installments of Brady vs. Peyton games, and they were almost always instant classics. My assessment was always that Peyton had the better arm by a small edge, but Brady had a small edge in football IQ, killer instincts, and leadership. Those years were really special. Brady may have more Super Bowl rings than he can wear on one hand, but to be fair it’s extremely difficult to settle on a greatest of all time in terms of the QB position player. Those two are definitely at the top of the pile, for my money.

      @@Austin.Kilgore The rivalry lives on! ;) The one thing I'll definitely disagree with was the squad. Post-2008, Brady never had a great squad (in New England, anyway). There were incredible individual contributors, but huge chunks of the offense came and went constantly. He had to break in a new rookie receiving corps seemingly every year, and running backs swapped out every season or two. I can't tell you the number of times the Pats fielded a team full of NFL no-names in Week 1, all us Pats fans were all like, "...Who?" And then they proceeded to grow into the season, perform great and win tons of games. It was insane to watch happen over and over again.

    Peyton slid in that one clip because he was going to get caught from behind and was better to go ahead and slide than to risk being drug down from behind and injured

    At that point you’re asking about his critics, that’s because at that point in his career he was getting old, and some thought, too old and beaten up to be effective. (Note by then he’d moved from the Colts to the Denver Broncos.)

    Still think you need to do Mike Vick before doing any other dual threat QBs, so you can really understand when and how the game was changed.

    He spent most of his career with the colts and won a SB with them. He got a late career injury (neck I think) that made him sit out an entire season and get released by the Colts. So people were skeptical when the Broncos signed him but he went to 2 SB's with them and won one before he retired

    A quarterback can not be hit if he slides feet first. That was a wimpy move to slide inside the 5.

    Peyton will always be one one my favorite QBs, despite not being a Colts/Broncos fan. Maybe I'm biased since we share the same birthday (3/24), but he was always one of the most fun gunslingers to watch. A shame he only has 2 SB rings because the Indianapolis Colts didn't manage the rest of the team as well as they could've
