I remember when it was 5 of the O'Jays and they came to Milwaukee, Wisconsin at the Milwaukee Theater in 1966 or 1967 and they sung " Stand in for Love." They were fantastic and the girls went crazy. I was one of them. Good good memories of house parties in the basement with this song playing...thanks for allowing me hear this song once again and cherish the fun times when I was a teenager...

This is what old school music is all about young adults don't know and will never understand and don't really care about this music and that is so sad. You're so right. I think we Baby Boomers had something to do with that. The community part that is and the success of many of the artists. We gave them big support, and without social media. But no, the quality of life is so different these days.

A STAND IN FOR LOVE! How many adolescent kids felt this way?! And yet, we all grew up, found someone, fell in love, and left these uncertain days behind! And yet...and yet...we return to these bittersweet memories, remembering how it was, and how BEAUTIFULLY these artists expressed our teenage angst! Thank you GOD, for these artists that expressed our feelings, at this point in time, in this country. Thank you, God, for these talented vocalists.

In 1966, on the chitlin circuit, you had the battle of the groups! Most famous, you had the O'Jays vs the Temptations! The O'Jays would close their set with Stand In For Love while the Temptations would close with I Know I'm Losing You! All this for three dollars! Those times will never come back again!

A wonderful piece of Music. I was playing guitar for some boys called the "Drells" from Wheatley high school, in Houston and I had just graduated. The lead singer just drafted, heading to Germany we had been in a local studio and had recorded several songs with Skipper Lee Frazier; the group had begun to drift apart at this point. We all loved this song and these guys. I did not know that one day I would be sitting in the same studio in Philly on S. Broad Street talking to Eddie and others on that label. I still love to hear these guys sing this song...man man...many memories right here!!!

That sounds like a five piece harmony, These were O Jay I did hear because of the Motown sound in my era... In the 60's very nice track.

I had the pleasure of seeing the O'Jays in 1966 on the same bill as the original five
Temptations at the RKO Proctor Theater, Newark, NJ. I was eleven at the time. My Father, my hero, took me at my request. We were way up in the balcony in a SRO House. It was "the time of my life".

No.....there were FIVE O'Jays at the time this song was recorded. The 5 original members were: EDDIE LEVERT, WALTER WILLIAMS, BILL ISLES, BOBBY MASSEY, and WILLIAM POWELL.

This is their first hit. I was a junior in high school. This is Ohio's third black group after the Mills Brothers and the Isley Brothers. Dayton still has the most R & B groups ever in the state.

"I'm like the lonely sailor, I don't go toa." An absolute soul gem! Now how about flipping it over for "Friday Night"? (Written by Randy Newman no less!)

yes this is one of the best up against the wall and sweating end of the evening songs, and i don't understand why they never put it on any of their laster albums even on the essential o'jays cd they have it live which is great , but just didn't have the favor of the original 45, thank guy, been looking for it for a long time,.

This song is from 1961 not 1966! On the flipside was "Lonely Drifter". I bought in the summer. Also bought "A little bit of soap " at the same time.

Charles Perry-Kelly ~ I thought this sounded earlier than ‘66 ! I think ‘61 sounds right. Kinda hard to hear Walter or Eddie. Wonder if Eddie was on lead? It’s kinda hard to tell, as I haven’t heard this since the early 70’s ! Man what a CLASSIC ✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾

wrong. the was during time of other songs i.e. No Time for you, I Dig Your Act, I Miss You, A Blowing Wind and many more. Previous recordings Lonely Drifter , Lipstick Traces, Crackup Laughing, How Does It Feel was before the Stand in for Love. It was members during does early years. I went to school with several friends that were neighbors with Eddie and Walter and they recited many stories when they were called The Mascots, Loved always seeing The O'Jays and a few occasions to go backstage!

@Ids916, nothing but the real thing in Cleveland OH-10, Mike (The Lover) Pain. I got all messed up listing to this cut and reading the memories.
Cleveland was the only place to be, The Music Box, The Alhambra Theater, Skate Land. Pay parties, turn on the blue light all on the walls and lets get the stinky finger.
