Love the tutorial from one of your favorite viewers from Canada. I have seriously fished for 35 years and have never seen a "Unicorn". I'm sure we don't have 'em up here, but I have fished the south a bunch, but never had the pleasure. Keep up the quality posts. Every time I finish one of your vids I find myself pulling up a play of Biloxi Blues.
I’ve fished the shad spawn a few times, mainly threadfin. My brother and I got 3rd in are state tournament last year fishing it. We also hammered some spots on lake Norman the weekend before, they were going crazy for a good 5-10 minutes then completely shut off. Great vid by the way👍
Hello Luke. That video was exciting to watch, and frustrating at the same time. I live in Washington State, I started bass fishin at age 20, and I'm 51 now. NEVER SEEN A SHAD ON ANY BODY OF WATER HERE! IDK? Maybe someone else has, but I don't think they exist in this state!! There may be some in the Columbia River system, but IDK? Is it a climate thing? The only shad that I've ever seen while fishin was at EL SALTO. Been there 3 times. When I've found em up shallow by the 1000's, a chrome/blue lipless crank just slays the bass. My PB came from there, a 11lbs-6oz donk, but I caught her out of a brush pile on a Texas rigged black 10" Berkley power worm in 15 feet of water.
Thanks Nick! Shad are definitely not everywhere. You don’t see them in a lot of the country. But I will say that all baitfish spawn they’re just all a little different. You can definitely find bass feeding though just because it congregates the baitfish.
You and I have the same views/thought process on finding the shad spawn, only thing I would add is the obvious, look for cranes especially when your dealing with threadfin! And you're right, it is sometimes so unpredictable, and this has been a very weird Spring this year, I live in North Louisiana and man this year I really haven't been on em that good. I'd have to be retired and have every day to fish to keep on em this Spring, not to mention with the stupid Covid lockdown every day on the lake was like a holiday weekend so I really didn't fish much during that time.
Me and my brother in law would always throw a big curly tail grub around shad spawn's here on GUNTERSVILLE. Just something different!! LIVE FOR THE THUMP MY FRIEND!!
I could ask which bait would work but it more seems like a location deal from what I'm seeing and hearing . Other than the obvious fishing around cover but does water clarity or depth also play a big role ?
Yeah the baits honestly depend on the day. How they’re acting and where they are positioned. Water clarity will change my bait selection a little, but I’ve not seen it stop the shad from spawning. Just keeps you from seeing them as well.
Direct wind blown banks help me or just getting in what wind you have and if you're throwing jig or spinnerbait the Alabama shake will diffently get a reaction bite. Shake it till you're forearm cramps
What lake are you on? Nevermind, thumbed through the comments and saw someone else ask. I'm about to try pickwick for the first time. We'll see what happens.
Gotta question Luke .Me and my buddy fished last Saturday on Cherokee Lake up in the river and seen the biggest shad spawn I've ever seen.Tried multiple lures and techniques just couldnt get them to bite. But also going on was the biggest carp spawn I've ever seen in my life.Do you think the carp spawn had a negative on the bass being around.Ive heard from multiple people that if carp are spawning they tend too scare bass off.
Just like in this video sometimes the bass just don’t find them. It’s definitely not automatic.... I definitely think the carp bug them. Especially if they’re still trying to spawn too. I’ve seen it kill the bite in shallow weedbeds when the carp start that
Went out the other day with the 6th sense magnum squarebill in ghost shad and my buddy was throwing a flicker shad, we wrecked them! But had 4 come off in that 5 pound range, made me sick lol. Awesome day, nonetheless!
That Mag Square is one of my favorite baits 6S makes. Catches bigs. I have had a few pull off of it though. They get leverage on that big bait and sling it.

Thank you Ron! I really appreciate that and the fact that you enjoy Biloxi Blues!
@@LukeDunkinsTravelingCircus I don't like Biloxi Blues, I absolutely love it!!!!
Awesome video Luke. Thank you for the information. Oh Gosh!
Thank you for watching!
A trolling motor prop that ain't been a bit chewed up is a trolling motor prop that ain't in the right spots! LOL
If mine doesn’t look like I drove it down the interstate at the end of the year I haven’t been fishing haha

Hey buddy
That’s awesome! You can definitely get well in a hurry when you find the right one!

That’s a great point! Always got to be watching for birds.

That’s a great idea!
Thank you Luke this seems to be the only way i can get out on the water these days. Keep them coming my man.
Thank you for watching Joseph!
We been doin pretty good on a white chatterbait. Looks like you need to call Darien to land a fish for you lol
That will catch them! Darien couldn’t catch them with dynamite 🤣🤣
Was that laurel hill lake you was fishing on
To day thread fin shad at lake Hugh m Gillis in Georgia I used a fluke on a 3 ot hook no weight
Heck yes. Love a fluke

I need to investigate this shad spawn a bit deeper I believe...there might be something to this....possibly lol
It can be awesome! And it can break your heart
Was happening on Pickwick last weekend but I could not catch a bass around em.

Same here biggest shad spawn I've ever seen on Cherokee Lake .But the carp spawn was unbelievable. I believe it spooked the bass.
They might not have been in them. Sometimes they just don’t find them.
That good on trolling motor prop just grind it down to nothings left 😅
Full send haha
Direct wind blown banks probably would have helped the hook up a little.
Yeah for sure. Didn’t have a ton of wind that day though. So it definitely hurt.
What lake are you on? Nevermind, thumbed through the comments and saw someone else ask. I'm about to try pickwick for the first time. We'll see what happens.
Good luck!

what lake is this? i have a tournament out of Waterloo Saturday and have been looking for the shad spawn, but no luck so far.
I was on a lake in Southern TN. I’ve heard it’s happening on Pickwick pretty good.
I'm gonna start videoing my fishing trips. Seems that when I watch videos, there is never another boat on the water. How do you do that? LOL.
When I left the ramp that morning I counted 24 trucks and trailers
What state are you in?
Tennessee!
That’s what I thought I am too. Would u mind saying what lake? I’m around Nashville and haven’t seen the shad spawn as of yet.

What frame costas are those?
Those are Tuna Alleys! Perfect for my big head
The ultimate rejection reared its filthy dirty head.....
I mean. It was a rough morning
