  • From 1985, here is a TV signoff from WAWS, then an independent station in Jacksonville, FL on channel 30. Features "Turn to News" for its id and a cult favorite sign off clip featuring footage from NASA and America's "Lonely People." All copyrights acknowledged. WAWS is now WFOX-TV, Fox 30, the Fox affiliate in Jacksonville.

My dad - Byron Morgan - made this when he worked for NASA. He was head of NASA documentaries then. He had a dreamers heart so it's not surprising he made this poignant sign off. I remember my sisters were big fans of "America" so I'm sure he was inspired by them to use the song. In fact, that's one of my sisters in the crib at the end.

"This is Us" had an episode featuring both the moon landing and this America song, so I guess some of the show's writers also remember it well.

Thanks for posting that! Boy does it bring back memories, living here and in college in the mid 80's, often watching either 30 or the other independent channel 47 at night while studying for college exams and such, saw this signoff often! :) I see a bunch of comments by local people here some of which worked at this station, through a sadly departed high school friend who worked at Channel 17 back then and I met quite a few people behind the scenes at a few stations but not WAWS-30.

I was 10 years old when I first saw this. Lucky enough to have a TV in my bedroom and I'd leave it on all night hoping this song would wake me up. I lived in Vegas when I was under 10 and wanted to move back some day. This song and video was so inspiring to me since I was a big space fan. It spoke to me and kept me driven for many years to continue to work hard to accomplish what I wanted in life. In 1997 I achieved that goal and moved back to Vegas which was the major turning point in my life. The best part occurred on Labor Day 1998 when a local Vegas radio station kicked off the first of many years' worth of Concerts in the Park at Desert Breeze Park, less than a mile from where I lived. The band that played? America! So there I was in Las Vegas sitting less than 50 feet in front of the band singing the song Lonely People that inspired me to work to move to Las Vegas 18 years after first seeing this video. Thank you for posting this? Now onto trying to find Channel 17's sign off with John Wayne's rendition of America, Why I Love Her....

I remember seeing this as a kid. It always struck something in my heart and soul, the tenderness and hopefulness it held.

Actually that sign on/off is from 1981. I worked there when the station first signed on the air. It was my first TV station job.

Thanks. The tape was from 1985. Do you know how long WAWS used this sign off?

@@jacky9br I worked there 81-85 before Fox, Malrite owned them and it used to be an Independent station and they used it those years. Whenever I hear it I think of after it ends I punch up black, turn off the transmitter, drop the log of in traffic and leave.

I'm not sure what the "Turn to News" reference is. I have worked at WAWS, (now WFOX) since before the station signed on in 1981. The only news we ran in the early years was "Independent Network News" (INN) produced by WPIX, New York and aired at 10PM weeknights after the 8 O'Clock Movie. In the mid 1990s, we started airing 10PM newscasts produced by WJKS-TV, the ABC affiliate. I think what you may be referring to is "One Good Turn", which was our "Slogan" that was used on air and in print materials from sign on until about the mid 1980s.

+ANJ4730 Turn to News was a news theme released by Gari Media in the mid 1980s that corresponds to the music playing in the background of the station id that bookends the "Lonely People" sign-off. Apparently WAWS used a cue from the theme. As a comparison, here is a comparison to WDSU, the NBC affiliate in New Orleans, from 1985. If you go to 0:50 in the clip here, ua-cam.com/video/CLIPmb3zjYc/v-deo.html , you will hear it fits the same melody and vocalists as the WAWS id here (WDSU used "Turn to News" for its newscasts during the mid-1980s).

I worked in Master Control at WAWS from 1982-87, at which time I left to work in Master Control at WTLV (1987-2004). I remember this sign-off, although I edited together a version the station used for awhile that was made up of Space Shuttle footage. I also appeared in some station promos for things like Turkey Day, Macho Man Week, etc. I still have the 1" dubs that I made (although I have no way to play them now).

3047Creative are you sure your recollection is accurate? In the mid 80's the 10:00 hour was Get Smart and The Twilight Zone. Later it was 21 Jumpstreet. I don't ever remember news before the 11:00 hour.

@@cessnaace Did Channel 30 also have that killer video of Christopher Cross's Sailing with the video of sailboats along the St Johns and at Doctor's Lake? I'd love to watch that again! Every time I visit the Tampa area, I play Sailing now as I head over any of the bridges toward Clearwater.

You should turn off the 'auto stabilization" filter. It's making the video too shaky.

I know they did at least between 1989 and 1995, the Fox 30 logo would always be in the lower right hand corner.
