Without a doubt she had the prettiest walk of any woman I've ever seen. Charlie X asked Kirk.."Is that a girl"? Kirk replied... "Thats a Girl". No truer words were ever spoken.

One of the most iconic hairstyles of all time (along with Carol Brady's shag with the flip at the back).

My most favourite of all the star Trek characters. The very first girl to make my heart flutter, she was so beautiful and will be remembered by many who watched the first series.

I got to meet her briefly at a small sci-fi con in Houston in the late 70s. We got our picture taken at the helm of a full-size shuttlecraft mockup but the negative was destroyed in the lab. I asked her why her character was dropped, and she gave me the old story about how they were afraid Rand's relationship with Kirk would cramp his love life. I think it's a shame she's not included when people talk about the show's main cast.

    • @phoffeld
      @phoffeld 2 роки тому +2

Nope. I had posters of her in my room. "Originally the series was supposed to center around a Kirk/Rand romance, but DC (Dorothy) Fontana thought and convinced Gene Roddenberry that it would make the series less interesting, so they centered around Captain Kirk being a great leader galloping around the cosmos. Grace was supposed to have bigger roles and it created tension on the set." - Bob Glenn (Glen Glenn Sound)

@@phoffeld I've picked up a limerick concerning this duo -
Janice loved Jim, sad to say,
Who wouldn't give her the right time of day,
      He'd married his ship,
      The ignorant drip,
Leaving Rand with which no one to play.

Big fan 💚 🎇 "Star Trek" 'Grace Lee Whitney'.... adding a certain kind of beauty & fine acting in her 🎬 roll on the enterprise. In those great year's we were all young, late 70tees to 80tees, racing home to see on TV 📺 I cud'nt understand how 🤔 she was in a lot of episode's and then gone from our tv screens?? I was always puzzled 💭🗯
glad i research her lovely name? My favourite program alway's & still watching on TV old Re ~ runs, 📽 💚 🎬 to UA-cam etc ! December 2022. RIP G.Lee.Whitney.... astonishing looking lady , who will alway's be remembered as 'Yeoman janice Rand' her part was so unique ❤

For those who don't know Grace Lee Whitney is responsible for the famous Star Trek miniskirt uniform! In the two pilots (The Cage and Where No Man Has Gone Before) the women officers wore pants. During costume fittings for the series Grace asked if she could instead wear a skirt to show off her dancers legs. Mini skirts were in fashion at the time so it didn't seem unreasonable. Once Nichelle Nichols was on board the rest was history! Thanks GLW!

@@cherry1311 My friend, Grace Lee Whitney had a problem with alcohol, and ended up being released from contract after eight episodes.
Many years later, she entered rehab, which she completed with flying colors, then she turned herself over to what she called a "higher power", if you will.
Grace went on to become a counselor and motivational speaker - and would even appear in future Trek stories, as it were.
Truly, I treasure her - and, as such, I also treasure Yeoman Janice Rand.

If the jj abrams film had made years earlier jenna elfman would have been perfect.. But since thats not the case now get someone who is an unknown and make her interesting enough to stick and perhaps a promotion

I think Grace Lee Whitney's Yeoman Janice Rand character was the inspiration for Denise Crosby's Lt. Tasha Yar character from Star Trek The Next Generation. Perhaps Tasha Yar was a relative of Janice Rand's. Also, I think that these two actresses were the inspiration for Sigourney Weaver's Gwen DeMarco character from Galaxy Quest.
