some years ago Sibiu was the cultural capital of the EU and they invested a lot in developing the culture and activities in and around the city. They did a good job of keeping all that going. i'm just commenting along the vid :)
I read some of the comments below, and I must inform You, as Romanian, that those food are not so heavy. Think it this way, most of the dishes they ordered, are "winter food". In Romania winter can be harsh, with temperatures below minus 30 ' Celsius. You need a lot of protein to survive such a day as an active person. Those are old and traditional food recipes, consumed by people like my grandfather who was a very active man. Try to imagine taking care of a farm and its animals during winter month, without modern technology, all the work was done by hand, feeding the animals, cleaning after them, in some regions of Romania even guarding them against wild life, we have more Wolves and brown bears then the rest of Western Europe combined. You can not do that without proper food. Each season has some preponderant types of food, for example during spring we eat a lot of fresh salads, fish, lamb ( lamb, strawberries, cherries season in Romania). In summer we eat a lot of vegetable soups, salads, fruits(water melon season for natural hydration) the the temperature can reach plus 40 " Celsius in the shade, so if You eat those winter dishes, You can just die of a heart attack. To understand the Romanian food You must understand the climate of Central Europe, a temperate Continental type, with huge variation in temperature between seasons. You just can not survive the winters with summer food or other wise.
Vasile Costin I challenge you to look up vegan dishes on youtube, you’d be surprised. There is such a variety or vegetarian and vegan dishes, no one eats “grass”
Gabi your comment makes me feel uncomfortable and its obsly not true cuz u can easily survive without eating disgusting stuff like meat even tho u have to take care of your animals or whatever you said lmao btw Casiana u r right
as a romanian, and a person who spends a lot of their time on the internet, You guys are some of the only americans who aren't a**holes about other cultures, this video definitely made me subscribe.

That's the reason why we always have soup as main dish. THEY'RE DELICIOUS My favourite is Soup with chicken a la Grec (I don't know the name in English) and perişoare soup
Elena Whoweiss Ciorba de perişoare 😂😂 fun little story perişoare sounds a lot like verişoare (cousins). And you better know that our grandma used to get a kick out of making ciorba de perişoare for me and my cousin whenever we went over.
Kevin Dauglas omg i'm so jelous of you right now i'm romanian and i've dreamed to go to japan, i'm currenty learning japanese basic words so when i have enough money i can go there and not make a fool of myself 😂😂 also is it beautiful there is it?
Kevin Dauglas There are a couple of Romanian restaurants in Tokyo, I've lived there for a short time and felt a terrible need to eat some food from home. They are quite good, but you have to make a reservation so they will know to prepare fresh food (because many ingredients can't be found in Japan so they need to be frozen).
Guys, i'm romanian... your description of food are really good and on point.. also your choises of food were really good and representative of romanian food! Good job!!! :)

OMG, you are killing me! I am a Romanian living in Canada and I really miss Romanian cuisine. I am also pregnant, and you drove me crazy with all these dishes. I want them all now!
Guys, pomana porcului literary means: pork s mourning ceremony!..it s realy exactly what people eat after pigs are ceremonialy slaughtered right before Christmas
I was about to write that, feast is not the right translation for "pomana". The word pomana means charity and it's coming from a Romanian tradition of serving free food to the people who attended a funeral, as a respect paid to the deceased. In this case as a "respect" paid to the pig 😅 Usually pomana porcului IS a feast, but not in a restaurant lol. You should try an accommodation in Maramureș, especially during winter, they serve the most authentic home made Romanian foods. Their pomana porcului is a feast indeed.

Wow. We didn't manage to make it to Romania on our family year trip but wish we could have. That food looks amazing, not to mention the town. Can't wait to see more from you trip. Love it -Henry
Hey, guys. First of all, welcome to Romania. Glad to see you're so interested in our culture and cuisine. And boy do you have so much to learn and taste.... I know it's too late now, but a local guide/friend would have been really practical to show you around and explain some of the stuff, like how to eat the tripe soup. I personally don't like the recipe and have never tried it, but I know it's supposed to be eaten with lots of sour cream (the recipe already contains it but some people like more of it), bread, and a jalapeno (because we're a spicy-loving nation). They all have a very precise purpose in creating the final taste experience. The sour cream mellows the garlic taste and the spicyness of the jalapeno, while the latter two mellow the taste of the tripe, which as you have pointed out, has a bitter aftertaste. Also, the cabbage in the sarmale should not be crunchy. That means that either the cabbage was not boiled enough or (more likely) that the leaves of the cabbage were too old when they were pickled and the fibers were too hard. Pickled cabbage should be soft and when used as an ingredient it should be even softer because it is also boiled in addition to being pickled. Sorry you couldn't taste proper sarmale. It would have knocked your socks off. Usually the best sarmale are made in a different province of Romania, Moldavia (not to be confused with the neighboring Republic of Moldova), particularly in the north part of Moldavia, also known as Bukovina. There you can find amazing painted medieval monasteries and a DOZEN different recipes for sarmale, ranging from vine leaf to pickled cabbage, from meat to mushrooms and carrots etc. I avoid the term sauerkraut because that describes a specific recipe made from pickled cabbage. The ingredient used in sarmale is pickled cabbage, which is fermented in salty broth. Yeah, that pork feast (pomana porcului) was not the best it could have been. That's usually what you get with tourist-oriented restaurants in the city center, which tend to offer watered-down versions of the traditional recipes because they know foreign tourists will not know the difference. It's a shame, because they're misrepresenting our amazing cuisine. Also, although the translation is somewhat accurate, the word feast is not the best equivalent for the local "pomana". Sure, it has the festive meaning because this was a dish made when people sacrificed their pigs for Christmas (pomana also means a funeral reception, like a mock feast for the dead pig with the pig's meat - we're cheeky like that), but the better translation would be pork extravaganza, because it's meant to be a dish that combines pork meat from various parts of the animal, each with its own flavor. So you see, it's not about the size of the platter, but the variety of the meat. Most of our dishes are a combination of salt and sour. We have some salty-sweet foods (inherited from the Saxon colonists in Transylvania), but we're mostly a salt and sour loving nation, with a separate sweet tooth reserved for deserts. But if you look closely, every dish is a combination of flavours, because we understood early on how to balance these flavours to make the perfect meal. Nothing should be just fatty or just sour. Everything is balanced either with some fresh onions or pickles to compensate for saltyness or grease, something fresh and sour to mellow spicyness and so on. We are a melting pot of cultures and cuisines and we took inspiration and improved the recipes from all our neighbors and even opressors. We took recipes from the Hungarians and Ottomans, from the Russian and the Tartars, and made them all better, more balanced. Our cuisine makes for a healthy diet thanks to these combinations of fats and fibers. Another key ingredient is moderation. All those foods are meant to be eaten in small quantities nowadays, because they were invented in a time when people needed massive amounts of calories to sustain intense physical effort like working the fields. These days, people working in an office have no need for meals that have 2-3000 calories in a sitting. BTW, that's definitely raspberry jam. One of the most popular jams we have. There's also strawberry, cherry, sour cherry, red currant, blueberry, plum, apricot, quince and lots of other jam recipes.
I think a good translation for "pomana" would be alms. I agree with you that they should have had a guide with them visiting someones grandma for those recipies.
It's nice to see people from other countries enjoying your favourite foods. I hope you enjoy your staying in our country. If you are in Sibiu don't forget to take a drive on the Transfagarasan. Best wishes from Iasi. PS If you need infomation of any kind, just ask!
The fact that you ate "mici" and "sarmale" represents yours baptism in this country, and from now on a part of you belongs forever to this country. I'm kidding, but I really appreciate that you tried those two our kind of food

Thank you for the video and the link for the airbnb; I will try it next time I'm back in Romania. Recently I was there for a month and that was far too short! I was mostly in Bucharest, but did go to Brasov and visited Bran Castle and Castle Peles. The people everywhere were absolutely amazing! The scenery was like nature's art being displayed to perfection, and the food, OMG, everything soooo fresh, not like here in USA. It's hard to explain, but, overall, I fell in love with this country, people and experiences.
It’s always interesting to see you try foods that most of your subscribers haven’t heard of , let alone tried. Cheap beer and excellent savoury foods - I need to visit Romania 😀
Tom Murphy go for it. Stop by Cabana Sambata while you’re there. Great hike, great view, and if you have meat with you, then great place for a barbecue. Also the monastary, hotels, restaurants, and events going on in the area are all pretty cool.
Romania is for the most part a Christian Orthodox country so there are many people who respect Orthodox traditions requiring them to eat vegan food on certain days, or even for many consecutive days like Easter Fast (Lent for Catholics), Christmas fasting period, and usually on Fridays. So it's not like Romanians gobble up huge quantities of meat on a daily basis. We are perfectly capable of eating vegan food, and if you visit Romania at a time of fasting you will certainly find restaurants who serve classical fasting foods. You can even find cookbooks with "retete de post" although the secret of Romanian food is the high quality of the vegetables (meat and fish too) so the vegetables taste delicious with only a few herbs and spices because they ARE delicious and healthy. Most of the dishes served in restaurants are hearty dishes, meat based, delicious and a lot of them - sarmale, ciorba de burta - also take a long time to prepare and are good in big quantities. One makes sarmale at home for Christmas because it's a family celebration and there will be lots of mouths to feed - extensive family, friends etc, and they freeze really well. But for one portion of sarmale, just find a good restaurant :-). Romania is a country where you really feel the seasons in your food, there are spring dishes, summer dishes, autumn and winter dishes, and "mancare de post" (vegan food). If you are willing to do your research you can find restaurants to your taste no matter if you are a meat eater, lacto-vegetarian (milk and egg products yes, meat no) vegan or whatever takes your fancy. If you want "traditional food" - be prepared for quite a lot of meat. This is our history, the most loved traditional foods in Romania are meat-based. There are exceptions, mostly appetizers (zacusca, eggplant salad, fasole batuta - a cream of white beans similar to hummus -) but for the most part if you want traditional food you will eat meat, and not even a vegan snowflake can change culinary history.
Come to Bukovina since you're in Romania. It's something that you wanna see. My family has a bed and breakfast that you'll definetly enjoy, it's called Pensiunea La Moara.
The cabbage it keep its crispyness becouse it is soggy gabbage means its keept in salt over the winter period most of times when temperatures are verry low, its ă tradition for us. Btw there are another type of sarmale used to cover the rice and meat with grape leaves , they are ă little bit dryer then the once with gabbage but i guess more tasty.

Peleș Castle is a must see.. I consider that castle being the most beautiful in Romania (its also surrounded by nature.. and tourists haha.. lovely place tho) Also the Cantacuzino Castle is close to Sinaia too.. its in Bușteni (7-10 minutes if you go with the train).. In the front of the castle is a place when you can also eat or drink (order) but the view is quite beautiful so yeah.. pretty nice place to eat and drink there too ;)
Yes Peles castle is spectacular but the walk from the car park to the castle is a bit of a killer for an old person.... And if you want to see something that will take your breath away visit the parliament building in Bucharest 👍

Ciorba is not sour soup, ciorba is a kind of soup that usually is not that transparent and it is “heavier” (with more meat) Sour soup is borș , but that is traditionally in Moldova, and that is very very tasty:)
Actually ciorba is a type of sour soup. Bors is an ingredient but also used to say “sour soup”. Have to remember different regions of Romania use words to describe dishes differently.
I think the "tochitură" looks & sounds pretty good... Love a good slow cooked stew... The "sarmale" sounds interesting... Wasn't a fan of sauerkraut previously, but I enjoyed it in Estonia last year... :) That dough dessert at the end...Yum...!
Man, I am Romanian, those "Sarlmale" can be made with boiled fresh cabbage leave too, I personally like them more . This way You say good bye to the sour taste.
OMG I spent days and days eating at those restaurants..... food is amazing... and I still visit them every time I go to Romania as it's just an hour drive from my place.....
Hiya. Now THAT'S what you call a food vlog! Just you and the food, all the relevant details, views of the venues and reviews of the dishes warts and all. And ONLY the 2 of you, too. It may be because I'm old school, but, to me, your posts lose a lot of spontaneity when you're sharing with 'Bonnie & Clyde' or you've met up with 'Mork & Mindy'. God!, I enjoyed this SOOO much!!! All the best to you.

I congradulate you on your open minds and sense of adventure to try the foods you have never eaten. Your videos are a lesson for the young on how to travel and enjoy.
I made the mistake of watching this video during the Coronavirus lockdown and now I'm crying cos the food looks amazing and I'm starving for them!!! Very well made video with honest and accurate descriptions, I lived in Romania for over 5 years and still can't get enough! Bravo for venturing out of your comfort zone cos it is so worth it! Love from Bucharest ❤️🇷🇴
You must try "Ciorba de perisoare" the red version with tomato paste. More "Mititei / Mici" . Also the Sibiu sausage salami is pretty famous. You could also try "Langos" or "Placinte cu cartofi" .

Everything you recommended them to eat is delicious and just by reading this I'm home sick:( I miss Romanian food so much,so I think my only option is to start cooking:)
I am so glad to see that 2 lovely people came to Romania and try our traditional food. I hope you will come back 1 day . Love you guys to pieces ! Take care
Haha, you guys are both hilarious and adorable how you get so excited over food and everything in general, it's really nice how you see the positive side of things around you :) the jam was probably forest fruits jam so ya, mixed berries :)
You guys are amazing! Traditional food in Romania 🇷🇴 is worth to taste! I grew up with all those meals and I can't imagine making my plan meal without some of them! 😊
Love the creepy "eye" buildings! 👁 And that inside-out jelly donut looked amazing. I have had this recurring dream since I was little of being on a flight to Romania, getting off at the airport and then getting lost in a town that looks similar to that. I don't know why I dream it...I have no connections or real interest in Romania?? But, pretty cool nonetheless. Can't wait to see the Dracula tour!
Its really cool to see other people try these things for the first time especially knowing how they taste. the only bad thing is my mouth is watering right now.
Love your food videos guys! Hope you're doing the Dracula element that you missed in Whitby, Yorkshire. If you're heading to Bulgaria or if not there already, try and check out Sliven and Karnobat, very local, and drink Kamenitza!
There is traditional tripe soup in Poland as well, delicious. You should have tried😕 And gołąbki which are similar to sarmale but made of fresh cabbage.

you should visit also Brasov and Cluj, but of course Oradea is the most beautiful. We have the most beautiful city center, we have Nymphea Aquapark, we have Baile Felix and Baile 1 Mai, thermal water resorts. We call this part of the country Ardeal, but the tourists know it as Transilvania. And by the way, you are good, I mean you are very good in what you do, the way you present food and the town and the places. I envy you for having such a life. And we are used to be the last country in European Union in every field, so it feels good when I see somebody telling so many wonderful things about my country. I am from Oradea, you should really visit it. Thank you and good bye.
I second that! Oradea's eclectic arhitecture will blow you away! If your plan is to head East of Romania, do not miss Oradea! And there are some very cool places, like Meatic Restaurant where you can eat "modernised" versions of other tradional foods you haven't tried yet like zacusca or pita cu clisa (that is greasy bacony stuff on bread)
Oradea is a 900 years old city, it has a fortress, and many many beautiful old buildings, the Black Eagle Palace, the new amazing city center, the Nymphea Aquapark, The Baile Felix just 8 km from the city, so a must see city.
Really love your blogs! Good info, very nice videos, nice captions and selections of representative local things. Great job! Fun to watch :) Safe travels!
gotta tell you guys, i'm from Brasil and some of these dishes made me mouth watering. Would really like do try some of them someday. Looking forward to it
omg, my mouth is sooo watering right now. you guys have eaten a LOT, hats down, i'm romanian and i can't eat all those amounts of dishes that you tried :) especially that they are super greasy and consistent. thumbs up for that. But guys, you definitely don't know how to eat 'ciorba de burta' 😂 .. Anyways, it was refreshing watching you 👍
@@Theendlessadventure hello guys the way you describe our food make me instant to subscribe So...the sourness that you felt in soop usually romanian have it from " borş" we use it fior all the year is made from fermentation of ground grains mixture (like sweet corn etc)... +during the summer in different parts of Romania they use even green grapes or "corcoduse"
@@Theendlessadventure well, that also depends on the region of Romania. No, it's not made with "borș"(borsch as u probably know it) but with either lemon juice or vinegar. That "ciorba de burta". The rest of our broths are usually made with that "borș ", and/or sour cream. That sour cream that came with your broth, you add it in the bowl of broth, gives a creamier texture. The garlic, same. If you want it more garlicky, or spicy, just add that in your bowl. Most people here also eat that pepper along with the broth, though personally, i think my mouth is on fire afterwards, so i say no thanks. One more tipp, romanians never eat bread and polenta with the same dish. Polenta takes the place of the bread. Hope u guys had lots of fun, despite the weather.
The sour in ciorbe is usually made using borș (though it can also be made or enhanced by adding lemon or citric acid). Romanian borș is related to the slavic borsch (normally made from fermented beetroot), but unlike the more its more well known cousin, it's actually made with fermented wheat or barley bran, giving a very sour taste. Adding it to a soup will make a ciorbă, or if it's one of the more clear types, the whole meal could be called a borș, zeamă, or acritură.
I love seeing someone else discover how to eat Romanian foods, brings back childhood memories of experimenting with the components, mixing and matching at the table. It's just so Romanian.
Watched the whole series while getting ready for work and I almost ruined my make up tearing ... I love all of your videos about my country and I miss it so much after watching you guys enjoying... I do hope you had a good time and that you'll visit Romania again. All that food...oh,my... multumesc!!!
Sarma is a Turkish origin word ( and good) used also in Greek as a food. It is a Mediterranean origin food spread out in Romania since the Fanariot age. Regardless the origin Romanians brought in their own touch ( Turkish don’t use pork meat but only rice and other vegetables which we do use it in the “Samale in foi de viță”. We eat them during summer time and lent/ fasting periouds as vegan dishes. Sarmale (STUFFED pickled Cabbage Rolls) became sort of “national” gastronomic stamp for the Romanian cuisine . Great Job! You can see that all Romanians here watching your video and living living abroad are literally drooling! ❤️🇷🇴💕
Thanks for share i Romanian culinary. Like ot 💖 My Romanian husband proud of his best chesse, fresh fruit and fresh vege in the country side too. We am looking forward to visit Romanian soon.
Yes! That's exactly what they are for. Also, in the summertime, they can be opened to vent out all the hot air that has risen from the lower floors all day. It really helps the houses to cool off in the evenings.
Indeed romanian food is quite heavy, that's why we generally eat it together with a side dish such as a white cabbage salad, or tomato salad and many others.
The food they chose is quite heavy (not the sour soups, but everything else) because they are traditional dishes and they are mostly winter dishes... but we do have a lot of fruit and vegetables. Most of us tend to buy fruit and vegetables from open markets and not supermarkets. Right now, for instance, it's the watermelon season, so everybody eats it.
Such a nice video. I'm so pleased you enjoyed our traditional dishes. As a tip, should you ever try out sarmale again, try them with sour cream - it is much better and easy to eat like this

Seems little unfair to judge most Americans from UA-cam etc
Man, Hungary, Romania and Croatia REALLY know how to make their soups. So yummy

Kevin Dauglas omg i'm so jelous of you right now i'm romanian and i've dreamed to go to japan, i'm currenty learning japanese basic words so when i have enough money i can go there and not make a fool of myself 😂😂 also is it beautiful there is it?
Yes, Japan is beautiful, too!

THE SAME IN PORTUGAL
I was about to write that, feast is not the right translation for "pomana". The word pomana means charity and it's coming from a Romanian tradition of serving free food to the people who attended a funeral, as a respect paid to the deceased. In this case as a "respect" paid to the pig 😅
Usually pomana porcului IS a feast, but not in a restaurant lol.

Literally the most accurate answer i read here! Bravo! Pity our country is not getting its deserved recognition. But that was truly on point!

It's hard to explain, but, overall, I fell in love with this country, people and experiences.
glad you enjoyed staying in my country.
Tom Murphy, if it happens for you to have romanian neighbours, pay them a visit at the dinner time. Our tradition is to invite every guest to eat!

Ciorba is not sour soup, ciorba is a kind of soup that usually is not that transparent and it is “heavier” (with more meat)
Sour soup is borș , but that is traditionally in Moldova, and that is very very tasty:)
Actually ciorba is a type of sour soup. Bors is an ingredient but also used to say “sour soup”. Have to remember different regions of Romania use words to describe dishes differently.

you should visit also Brasov and Cluj, but of course Oradea is the most beautiful.
Orade noasta-i baza...Rogerius si Cantemir is baza.
Hmm I haven’t heard much about Oradea, I should think of visiting
Oradea is a 900 years old city, it has a fortress, and many many beautiful old buildings, the Black Eagle Palace, the new amazing city center, the Nymphea Aquapark, The Baile Felix just 8 km from the city, so a must see city.
Oradea is not in the east...

Haha, when the food's that good, it's easy to go a bit overboard !😂 We had such a delicious day!
@@Theendlessadventure hello guys the way you describe our food make me instant to subscribe
So...the sourness that you felt in soop usually romanian have it from " borş" we use it fior all the year is made from fermentation of ground grains mixture (like sweet corn etc)...
Really glad to see different people trying our native dishes. Hope you will visit us more.
You should visit also Maramures it's a wonderful place..
Love love the food videos!!! Woohoo!
Oh I love stuffed cabbage, we eat that a lot on my Polish side of the family!
I love seeing someone else discover how to eat Romanian foods, brings back childhood memories of experimenting with the components, mixing and matching at the table. It's just so Romanian.
Those bread bowl soups, 😋. And that dessert looks absolutely delicious
Watched the whole series while getting ready for work and I almost ruined my make up tearing ... I love all of your videos about my country and I miss it so much after watching you guys enjoying... I do hope you had a good time and that you'll visit Romania again. All that food...oh,my... multumesc!!!
We call sarmale sarma in the country I‘m from and it‘s so good 🤤🤤
Where are you from? Serbia,... Poland, maybe Croatia.
@@costixyz8827 the Polish stuff is not so good
Sarma is a Turkish origin word ( and good) used also in Greek as a food.
vaii mi sa facut foame cu videoul acesta 🥰 miss Romania 😻
your review was very accurate. subscribed.
Thanks for share i
Romanian culinary. Like ot 💖 My Romanian husband proud of his best chesse, fresh fruit and fresh vege in the country side too. We am looking forward to visit Romanian soon.
Yet another amazing vlog, I am so hungry now, lol!
By the way, what's with that house staring at us in the opening scene? :D
Yes! That's exactly what they are for. Also, in the summertime, they can be opened to vent out all the hot air that has risen from the lower floors all day. It really helps the houses to cool off in the evenings.
Glad you guys liked Romania and its food! It’s nice to see people visit Romania.
Must try "perisoare" sour soup. It is the best
You guys are fun to watch.keep it up.
Sibiu looks so interesting and lovely! The food looks quite heavy for summertime. Are there many fresh vegetables and fruits?
Indeed romanian food is quite heavy, that's why we generally eat it together with a side dish such as a white cabbage salad, or tomato salad and many others.
Baron Von Albert Here in the US salad is usually served first but I like mine with or after the main dish
Flav C in the US here at restaurants the salad is always served first as in Canada. I tend to eat salad with or after the main. Makes more sense!
you'll find plenty of fresh food there.
It looks like a dish with a mixture of many countries taste.
Looks like delicious.
Try "fasole cu ciolan" in Blaj it is near Sibiu it is very good. Every Romanian can agree
that ciolan cu fasole is not only there.ciolan cu fasole este si in bucovina, si maramu si chiar si la constanta
Such a nice video. I'm so pleased you enjoyed our traditional dishes. As a tip, should you ever try out sarmale again, try them with sour cream - it is much better and easy to eat like this
