  • Bigger is better; well, that was what she said. As well as Monitor Audio, with their Silver 100 which carries an eight incher. Bass will be there no doubt, but will the mids and highs be better than the KEF LS50?
    Comparison to the KEF LS50 and Dali Opticon 2 in the review.

    I have watched your review twice and read all the comments here....also, I watched BEFORE and AFTER I bought my Silver 100s...😯...and I watched your review and listened to my new speakers with an open mind. I think that your review is very honest...and you clearly define your likes, dislikes, and prejudices VERY clearly...also...your review and your discussions in the comments with others are very consistent with your findings and your stated feelings about the 3 sets of speakers, especially regarding the different speakers' performances with certain songs! Your presentation is VERY informative!!! I do not understand so many angry attacking comments!?!?😳
    No speaker is perfect..and as humans we all have differences in our hearing and how our brain processes what comes in our 👂👂👂s...We all have different rooms, room treatments and electronics, etc. We have likes and dislikes and certain parts of the sound that we seem to "attach" to. I am still carefully listening to a wide range of music material and evaluating my room, equipment and speakers...(I have these speakers in a 5.1 Surround Sound System and they are fantastic for movies!...but my listening set-up for comparison here, with just music playback is as follows). My room is somewhat larger than yours but still modest and I have some sound absorption in play on flat-wall areas. The speakers are on 17” stands and about one foot away from the wall. I am playing Amazon HD Ultra through HEOS in the Marantz as source material. I am running on a Marantz SR6015 in 2.1 mode corrected for my room with Audyssey XT32.....and I have an old Audio Engine 10” powered sub in the mix as well with my Silver 100s. I have been "tweaking" the Audyssey curves slightly in the Audyssey App. I am also turning off the Audyssey Curve and tweaking the sound manually and using the amps equalizer and am enjoying this fun experience immensely. I plan on also hooking the S100s up to my CD transport, Anedio D2 DAC and modest Chinese 23 WPC @8ohms 300B-tube amp (as I believe that the S100s are just efficient enough to justify a listening with the smooth tubes...and also because I watch waaaay too much Steve Guttenberg! 😎 ....I bet that I need the port plugs!...We'll see)...
    Your review and your discussions makes me want to listen to a set of KEF LS50 Metas with a pair of SVS 3000 Micros! (but that is a $3000 outlay 🤑)...I purchased my Silver 100s for $770 with no tax and free shipping "new".......so that was definitely a factor in my decision to buy them....I have mixed feelings about the "sound" so far....🤔...visually my speakers are a white pair and I find them to be incredibly beautiful and rich-looking, especially with the grills off!!! I particularly LOVE the industrial-design dispersion covers over the tweeters and the dimples on the surfaces of the light-gray/silver drivers! 😺
    Thanks for your informative, thoughtful review and consistent follow-up in the comments....
    You have enriched my music experience!👍🏼

    I appreciate your effort and attention to detail in reviewing these fine speakers, and it’s always interesting to hear an audiophile’s take on practical performance. But subjective comparisons of speakers in particular is in my opinion a dicey proposition. These are all top quality, affordable speakers as countless reviews will attest to. One performing better than another in various ways. But anyone relying on another’s ear to determine a purchase decision is potentially making a costly mistake. Once you’ve narrowed it down to quality options, speaker preference more than any other audio component is a very personal choice. Granted, if one doesn’t have access to these products to make the comparison themselves, this can be useful. What am I looking for in a speaker review from a knowledgeable source? Just tell me if you think it’s worth consideration in terms of sound, build and value for my dollar. Are you excited about the product. If your assessment excites me, I’ll put it on my list and take it from there as far as comparisons go.

    • @TheAudiofool
      @TheAudiofool  3 роки тому +4

      Thanks for watching. As you said, choosing speakers is subjective and everyone has their preference, and it's always best to listen in person and make your decision from there. Like most people though, I'm curious about all these different gears but don't have the time or perhaps its not available at all in my location, so I have to make a blind buy. I read a review and this reviewer says its great, in this song, its this and that, and recommend. So I buy it, and find it isn't at all what I expected it to be. I find reviews with comparisons most helpful for me, as it gives me a baseline of what to expect. Sure it's still subjective if someone says the ls50 is brighter than the silver 100, but if i've heard an ls50 and found it too fatiguing, at least i know that the silver 100 is a better choice in that aspect. Not finding many comparison reviews, I decided to do some of my own. I do have a more revised format in my latest reviews, so i start with my recommendation as well as a price i will buy it, and then proceed to have comparison charts if the viewer wants to have a better idea of how a gear sounds vs another. I do respect your opinion, and will try to make viewers more enticed to try out the gears i reviewed and liked.

    Thanks for your excellent review....VERY enjoyable. One question, you mentioned your dislike for the heavy bass response of the MA Silver 100. Did you try using the foam port plugs that come with this speaker to reduce the bass response? Thanks again. (PS: I enjoy ALL your reviews.)

      Thank you! I only found the the bass to be too heavy handed in Don't know why, and in direct comparison with the Opticons which are a little lacking on bass. I didn't use bungs as it sounded fine on it's own, and as I mentioned, I love the bass textures and not a lot of speakers have this especially at this price range. Ultimately, I found the Opticon's a better listen for me and my choice of tracks but there will certainly be others who would prefer the silvers.

The Q350s are suppose to be quite good, with great imaging and deep bass. I saw your review on the Q350s and noticed you used the bungs to tone down the bass bloat. You and I have different tastes or perhaps different ears. Love your reviews. Peace

      Man Sang Woo, I love my Silver 100s. They do need to be pulled away from the back wall at least two feet to get a more balance sound. If placed too close to the back wall the bass is a bit too heavy handed. The Silver 100s are excellent for jazz trios and quartets because they will play the full range of an acoustic bass down to 41hz. I haven’t used the port bungs yet. Peace.

    Hello. Thanks for your excellent reviews. After reading reviews & comments on the S100s I have made a decision on purchasing these based on my preference of music, witch is almost unanimously jazz quartets/quintets-"no vocals". I have an average sized listening space & wouldn't use a sub. Would like to know how well they handle low volumes. Another one I'm considering is the Dali Oberon 3. Any thoughts on this? Thanks again

    • @TheAudiofool
      @TheAudiofool  4 роки тому +1

      They sound better when played at normal levels. I haven't heard the Oberon 3 so can't comment on that, but I really like the Dali rhythm so I would probably go for that. That said, the silver 100s are good speakers with great bass and you can go down to 41hz easily so that's probably the better choice for jazz quartets.

      @ctr289 3 роки тому

      @@TheAudiofool Yes, but the difference in pitch and the room are the problem, not the rhythm itself. For example, Silver 100 has powerful and deep bass and in a small room the bass will become muddy and sluggish and smear the rhythm, but it's because of the tone and the room. Same on highs, if a speaker has very wide dispersion on mid-highs and you have an untreated room, the mid-highs will sound muddy and lack rhythm. If you listen to speakers and amps in an open field, with no room interaction, rhythm will be the same for all.

    I just picked up a pair of the Silver 100's and the C350 center channel. I found them 1/2 off on closeout, the 6G models. I bought these primarily for Home Theater use, music second. Granted, I have not heard these, so I am more or less blowing smoke out my rear end, blindly purchasing due to all of the great reviews, and there are plenty of them.
    I think the sound will be determined more by the amplification and room. I have several different amps that I want to play around with on these, class D, A/B and the Denon AVR 44000X... Then the room... Not treated, medium to large, some carpet and furniture, huge couch.
    And on a side note, a graphic equalizer... I think that will be the tell, taming the highs if need be along with the proper crossover with the subs, two SB3000 units.
    I'm kind of new to all of this, but what little experience I have had, all of the above plays into this.
    I have the SVS Ultra bookshelf's, and I know that I get a different sound on different amps. The Ultra's really come alive on a Class D amp vs my XPA2, where they are more laid back.
    That's all, I'm still learning and playing around with gear, it is a fun hobby, and that is the key word we should all remember, FUN! Thank you for the video.

    Hi all.
    Going to add my 2ps worth.
    I personally look for a speaker with full range with in my budget. So speakers which can drop below 45hz are good with me.
    This is a good start. Of course, people like different things from they’re speakers Highs - lows - mids.
    But the thing to remember is if you are use to listening to speakers which do not drop below say 70hz / 65hz when you hear speakers that do you are going to notice the Low end.
    You will probably feel the bass is overpowering but really you’re hearing what you’ve never heard before .
    The truth is our ears get use to how things sound,
    I have worked as a sound engineer for years.
    yes it dose come down to personal taste when it comes to speakers. Personally full range out of a left and right pair of speakers is a winner for most rooms. Point source.
    A reasonable pair of speakers with a good dynamic range will play all types of music and shouldn’t really colour the sound.
    This is really the basic starting point.
    of course, we are relying on somebody else’s design and set up each manufacturer has different ideas.
    The more neutral and the more range the better . The truer the re-creation of a voice or instrument, the better.

The truth is all gears are fantastic, and if they weren't why would manufacturers bother selling their stuff right? Which is why I always have comparisons in my reviews, so if you've heard of say the ls50 and i say that that the vocals are a lot more forward than silver 100, and you wanted vocals to be presented a little bit more neutral, than the silver 100 might be better in that aspect. I could've left it like that but some people want to know which I prefer, and in my case, I still preferred the LS50, and in the price range, Opticon 2, BW606, and currently, the Elac DBR62, primarily because I want my sound to be more exciting. That said, my newer videos have a suggested price at the end, of which I say how much I think it would be worth to buy the speaker.
      As for my silver 100s, I've long sold them but the the guy I sold them to really like them so it's really personal preference.

    I've tested the Silver 100 against Focal Aria 906 at my home using Yamaha A-2070 AV receiver. All it took was one Mark Knopfler track for me to make a decision and go with the Aria 906. Even that the Aria has a smaller 6.5" drive, they had deeper bass and of course much better imaging. They cost about 500$ more, but worth every dollar. BTW, Aria 906 also sounded better than the LS50 at the shop, especially due to the lower end extension, which can reach 60 to 70Hz, while the LS50 struggle at 100Hz.

    • @ctr289

      Aria 906 don't have deeper bass than Silver 100, in fact they don't have deeper bass than most 6 inch speakers, let alone 8 inch ones. You either wired the Silver the wrong way or did something wrong. Silver 100 have one of the deepest bass among all bookshelf speakers, while Aria 906 has one of the shallower ones. Silver 100 manage to excite the 32Hz modal resonance in my room while Aria 906 acts as if the room mode doesn't even exist.

    What hifi gave 5* award to monitor audio silver 100
    And 3* to monitor audio bronze 100 6G
    I had monitor audio bronze 100
    And i had wharfedale 11.3 at the same time
    Wharfedales play much nicer, ma bronze 100 sounded dull, abit lifeless in comparison., hence 3* would be accurate. Im trusting 5* for ma silver 100, would also be accurate.
    And thats all you need to know
    One thing i can tell you is that you can really push ma bronze 100 as they got 8” woofer rather 6” that most speaker has. So with better sounding speaker like ma silver 100 you should have real good time. Ofcourse if you into most amazing sound there are levels and price differences but if you can push ma silver 100 like i did with ma bronze 100 anf get better sound music clarity vocal reproduction and all those things, ma silver is really good option

      I have a bronze 100 review, and it's pretty much what you said. Fantastic bass, but mids and highs are not as good. While the silvers are much better up top, they have the same sound sig more or less, I'd say you should probably go for an Evo 4.2 if you like the 11.3 sound sig. Still best to hear it for yourself and judge with your own ears though.

    • @TheAudiofool
      @TheAudiofool  4 роки тому +1

      My apologies for not mentioning. They sound the best without the plugs, and I didn't use them because they didn't sound boomy in all songs and even then, only sounded boomy when compared directly; I would've scored it worse with the plugs on. It would be difficult to discuss the effects of plugs because each room is different and so I only review the speakers at how it sounds best in my room. For example, in my Q350 review, I mentioned that they sounded best with full plugs on and that's what I used when I compared it with other speakers. If I don't mention it, please assume that the port plugs are not used.

      Dam, I also found Monitor Audio BR2 bass to be overblown with some port hum. They were, however, easy to drive and did the best job of emulating a big speaker for the budget. The Silver 100s produce more quality bass with the larger driver but they need the mid speaker in the 500s to sound great.
