The K-pop summer wars and the coveted summer queen title

- Every summer in K-pop, the summer wars happen. Taking place around late May to the end of August, the summer wars feature female groups and their summer hits.
Each group is vying for the right of being that year’s summer queens. While the summer queen title is not an official title that you’ll see at awards shows, to K-pop fans, this unofficial award is a big deal. Being the summer queen has a ton of perks, including advertising, music show appearances, and the spotlight for three months.
K-pop labels know all too well about the prestige of this title. Since Sistar’s disbandment in 2017, the summer queen title is open for the taking. While there's been some groups that have summer bangers, none have been consistent enough to be the consensus new, summer queens.
Which female group will succeed Sistar’s summer queen throne? Let’s break that down!

sistar will always be the og summer queens. they are ICONIC.
I agree with you in that the closest to the "summer queen" title is Red Velvet but, they haven't built up a string a summer bops like SISTAR did in the past(I think RV have 3 Summery Songs so far) but RV is rumored to have a comeback in August so maybe they can add to that list with another Summer bop. Even still, I think the "Summer Queen" title is still up for grabs.
Watching this actually hurt, damn I really do miss sistar, every summer just killing it tbh, I'm happy seeing all these groups going for that summer queen title that sistar has left wide open, I remember the summer of 2018 waiting for that fresh summer bop from Sistar and I was sad when I fully realized that they weren't coming back for good, although all the members solo songs have give me summer vibes espically hyolyn and soyous recent releases very very summer vibes, it's sad but it's also a major opportunity for these groups to grab that title and run with it.
I think it's between Brave Girls, Red Velvet, and Oh My Girl. OMG has released a couple good ones the past couple summers but Red Velvet has a lot more and hopefully their August release. The Brave Girls ladies all just seem to embody summer to me from Rollin, We Ride, and High Heels to Chi Mat Ba Ram and Pool Party. I think they may also have a slight advantage since their company made so many of Sistar's summer hits.

That album cover for 'Rollin' is the riskiest cover I've ever seen in Kpop!
SISTAR will always be the Summer Queens! They might have disbanded, but their songs live on and still reenters the chart especially during summer. Also HYOLYN has been giving summer bops such as See Sea, Bae, Say My Name and recently a collab with fellow Summer Queen Dasom for the song Summer or Summer. ❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥
Omg when u said 2010 when the summer queens was first coined about a decade ago, made my heart jump, cos i realised times have changed.

this was very informative, i never thought about it from a business side. Have you considered doing a video about the cost of starting a kpop agency? I think it's something not often mentioned, there are very few groups that gain popularity through small agencies but I always wondered how much it costs to run one(studios,staff,dorms and all)

As you can imagine, it's a lot of money to start a K-pop group. Heck, even for indie groups without the dancers and fancy production staff, it's quite high.
I have to get updated numbers on the costs, as my numbers are from 2018 when I last lived in Seoul. I'll ask some of my friends in industry for updated numbers in running a K-pop agency and look into this video in the future.

TWICE are definitely the Summer Queens! Cheer Up (2016), Likey (2017), Dance the Night Away (2018), Fancy (2019), More & More (2020), and Alcohol Free (2021). All huge summer hits! Can't be more consistent than that!
You can definitely make a case for Twice. Alcohol Free is such a banger! One of my favorite songs this year.
I have to admit that I’m only a Boy Group Stan and can’t really judge about the introduced examples. In the past I only listened to 2NE1 and Girls Generation. Personally I feel mostly drawn to the song of Oh My Girl in the video. But all of them seem interesting. Therefore, I wish everyone success. 🌞

I agree that it's too early to call brave girls as the new summer queens just yet. They haven't proven anything yet and is riding on hype and marketing. Let's see and watch what they'll do to keep the momentum up. Maybe they can claim that title in 2 or 3 years time.
I'd rather give the title to either twice or red velvet since they release summer vibe songs around this time of the year.
