McNeil River State Game Sanctuary - Fishing "the riffles"

Mid-June and red salmon are running up Mikfik Creek in the McNeil River State Game Sanctuary. In a part of the creek called “the riffles”, the salmon are even more exposed in the swift, shallow water. Here an adult female, I believe it is the bear called “Bearded Lady” by the McNeil staff, and her two second-summer cubs try to catch some fish. The cubs watch and learn…. June, 2018.

How old are those cubs??

They are second summer cubs also called yearlings.

@@montisino Okay, bears are usually born in the den in the middle of winter, let’s say January though that can vary. In their first June they would be 6 months old. At that point they are called cubs of the year or “coy”. Brown bear coy are typically very dark or black and often have a band of white hair around their neck/chest which disappears over time. Their next June they would be 18 months old and called “yearlings”. And in their third June they would be 30 months old and called two-year-olds. So the cubs in this clip are yearlings and around 18 months old. It is interesting to add that this adult female, called Bearded Lady, was seen this July at McNeil with three coy.
