ABSENT IN BODY make their Relapse Records debut with the terrifying new album Plague God. Featuring current and former members of AMENRA, NEUROSIS, and SEPULTURA, Plague God is bound by the same ideals of unity and fearlessly uncompromising honesty of expression that have driven their respective bands to imperious heights of reverence and groundbreaking sonic deliverance. Plague God is by turns devastating and sublime, drawn from musicians for whom life and art are inextricably bound.
Initially the brainchild of AMENRA guitarist Mathieu J. Vandekerckhove, and NEUROSIS vocalist/guitarist Scott Kelly, ABSENT IN BODY formed in 2017. Immediately recognising their kinship, and with AMENRA frontman Colin H. Van Eeckhout brought in on vocals and bass, what emerged is a reflection of the intervening years of turbulence, extending it's scope as it navigates across five stretches of unstable terrain. From the opening Rise From Ruins with Sepultura drummer, Igor Cavelera’s tribal beat emerging from foreboding, near-subsonic oscillations to explode in a tide of corrosive riffs and feral howls, through Sarin’s steadfast, procession-through-purgatory groove, to The Half Rising Man’s matrix of organic/mechanic evolution, it’s an album in constant dialogue between the animalistic, the human and the industrial, and a hunger to distill a truth, something unpolluted from the fray.
Plague God doesn’t just give voice to these moments of truth, but in the band’s deep kinship integral to every claustrophobic judder, every stretch of atmospheric dread and helpless alias assumed, lies a freedom we both forget and attain at our peril.

Holy hell, this is just sick. Heavy, atmospheric, dark, yet oddly catchy.
I love the ambient-like approach. No unnecessary breaks, guitar wankery or anything like that . Just a constant wall of sludgy goodness.

@@Compendyum Hmm, I can't really hear the similarity other than the overall dark sound. To me, HLB's music isn't even nearly as atmospheric and ominous as this.
Their focus lies more on technicality and brutality, which is cool aswell. And even though they incorporate a lot of atmospheric elements, I think it's hardly comparable to what Absent in Body are doing here.

Got the “Dying God Coming Into Human Flesh” vibes mixed with “Begotten”. This however has laid a a dark shadow over them. Mad respect to these guys.
Celtic Frost was the first thing I thought of when I heard this, particularly DGciHF.

Dude that album by CF is wicked. I hate to say i was 22 or something when it came out. Gotta love the Frost.
I just want to point out that these guys managed to create the heaviest song ever in drop C tuning, playing 3 notes, while other bands tune down to almost out of hearing range on their 10+ strings guitars, yet achieve half of the impact. For me this elevates the song even more.

Ah not sure I'd call it the heaviest song ever by a long shot. It's very atmospheric. It's very creepy. It's very good, but not even close to the heaviest ever. I do agree that alot of bands now tune way down in an attempt to sound heavy but just wind up sounding boring because they're not really writing a song. This a song. It has it's thing happening and doesn't just blend in with everything else.

I listen to this while walking home after midnight, while driving on dark lonely country roads at night or while walking through a forest at midnight. It creates the perfect athmosphere and never misses. You shouldn't just listen to this. You must FEEL it. Dive into it. Let it melt into you. That kinda thing.

Damn, this is excellent. Always liked Neurosis and industrial so this was right down my alley. The lyrics, the video, the vibe of the song is excellent. There is a matter of subjectivity and it comes down to preferred taste and I get that this isn't for everyone, but speaking objectively this isn't music that is made to entertain you, it isn't role-playing but pages from an emotional diary and hence the music that is heavy, dark, slow, ( seemingly) monotonous, drone like.. The lyrics and music go hand in hand describing what the authors wanted, the feeling of scorn, betrayal, anger, hopelessness...
yeah it's very much along the lines of Neurosis and Godflesh and I dig it. Really has a Godflesh vibe to me.
