This night changed my life. Not only was I introduced to a whole new world I never knew about (animated music videos weren't as common back then), two of my favorite bands, but the final video of the night literally awakened me. Seeing a video like that changes a person (especially when you're only 11).
@@drewwilson45 the song in the last video is hell bent by kenna. highly recommend checking out more of his music he is/was (not sure if he's active anymore) a tremendous artist
Dude I stayed up for both special editions...my childhood was the greatest, toonami was the greatest thing to happen to 90,s kids..and to my little show host Tom...see ya space cowboy
This moment in Toonami history changed my life for the better: it made me open up to different music which caused me to get my first Daft Punk CD in *"Discovery"*.
How could 1 night of my 10-year-old life have such an impact on my future...amazing. What would I be like had I simply fell asleep? This 1 hour of TV changed everything.
Sorry to necro you 3 years later but I have noticed that countless of us watched this episode at that late night hour. I think it truly opened up a whole new world of music to the newest young generation at that time, us. Now its weird that WE have kids we are not the new anymore. Crazy huh.
One of the most EPIC nights of my (back then) ten-year-old life. This folks...THIS, among MANY other reasons was why Toonami was, is, and always be something special.
Yup August 31st 2001. The day before I turned 12, and 11 days before everything went to shit in America. I got one of the best Bday gifts that night. Glad Toonami is coming back, I knew about Gorillaz before Toonami, but they introduced me to Daft Punk.
I remember taping this the night this first aired. Daft Punk and Gorillaz helped open that door to these endless animated music videos. Which in turn, influenced me to make my own AMVs and still do to this day.
I love how this one night literally shaped the musical taste for the REST OF MY LIFE. I've still got my old G-Sides CD and a copy of Interstellar 5555 around, too.
Ahhhh NOSTALGIA!!! I remember fighting to stay awake to watch the whole thing! Why can't CN have great stuff like Toonami again? ;A; I remember Toonami and Ed, Edd, 'n Eddy were my favorite shows as a kid.
Dude, you just made my day........scratch that, you just made my week! I almost cried with joy when I saw this. Thank you so much for posting something that took me back to my awesome child hood and this life changing night.
I actually stayed up late by accident and saw this air. Best day of my fucken life as a kid. So epic. I didn't understand what the hell was going on, but the music was awesome. I got my headphones, plugged it into the TV, and watched the special run to the very end. No other Network airing on today was this cool
I remember when this came out, I was at home helping my mom and my sister move something into our house, so I turned this up so I could hear it outside.
It now makes me sad that I never knew about or watched this, back when I was only 6-years-old. From my (pre-)teens, I've always known about Gorillaz, but I never got into them until last month, when I finally decided to start listening to them. My younger sister, on the other hand, strongly believes that she had seen the "Clint Eastwood" video on TV before.
Why have I never searched for this on YT until now? We all need to give some massive credit to dankrug571v2 for having this gem stashed on a VHS. Like many others here, this night changed my life. I remember exactly where I was at the time and it really was the first time I found music that *I* liked without anyone telling me about it (Well, aside from Toonami). Edit: Straight up- after this, I emulated my clothing and style form 2-D at like, nearly 12. That black-eyed bastard still influences my wardrobe 'til this day.
The night this aired was the same time I knew about Adult Swim coming onto Cartoon Network for the first time. Very short notice, but still...it was once great Labor Day Weekend of 2001. Good thing I came home an hour before that started, and this was back when I was in marching band. We had an away game, and it rained on us throughout the whole high school football game. Lost my Bret "The Hitman" Hart/Emmitt Brown shades on the way back :/
While I did watch the Toonami Midnight Run, but of course I did not see every broadcast of it but most of it. However, I can't believe I missed the special edition of the Midnight Run because back then I never heard of the Gorillaz when they made their debut. I did know about Daft Punk back then but I didn't know the name of the duo or the titles of any of their tracks at the time. I gladly thank u for posting this vid of the promos of the SE, now I see what I missed back then.
I still have the entire block on a VHS tape on my shelf, the episode is in better quality on Archive. I wore my tape out from watching those Gorillaz videos haha.
The music video for "Rock The House" hadn't been finished then, and well, uhhh, I doubt it would have gone through the censors for obvious reasons. Yeah, it was after midnight, but this was not part of the Adult Swim block or anything. They wouldn't have shown that type of content back then.
@@ShaDHP23 I'm surprised I never noticed that after all the years of watching. I did notice they censored the word "sh**", though, when Del says "hype sh**". The official clean version still retained that, since the clean version of the album was all I had for the longest time.

I don't think the "Rock The House" video was out at the time, and it obviously would have been too risque at the time even if it was. In any case, I'm glad they showed Kenna, because it turned me onto him, and I went through a phase digging his music.

the blue alien music video was actually an anime movie called, Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem. it's an okay movie worth checking out.
I wonder - well more on the side of wish - that they'd bring back the midnight run in the form of 'early hours'. I know it's on saturday but if they had maybe the last hour or the four to five timeslot to just play really dope music videos alongside their Off the Air stuff that would be pretty dope
For me UA-cam recommended the video to me to remind of the good times I had as a kid staying up to watch this. UA-cam sure is recommending Daft Punk related videos lately after their retirement. Sad to see them go because these Interstella 5555 music videos were amazing.
The song is Hellbent by Kenna. The actual video was taken off youtube due to copyright problems, but a quick Google search can probably find it for you on another site.

There are some VHS artifacts, especially during "One More Time", which have pretty much always been there. (I should have used a better tape.) You can find these videos on the official Gorillaz and Daft Punk DVD's in far better quality, but hey, if you still want to see them in this format, then by all means, let me know.
