If you really want to get those old European vibes, you need to take one of those big boats to Stockholm or Tallinn. They have city districts straight from the medieval times. Turku should have been like that in Finland, but it burned to the ground too many times, so it's just some scattered genuinely old buildings. While Helsinki is decently sized on the Nordic scale, it was only founded in 1550, so you won't find anything medieval there, although it has lots of a bit younger, beautiful buildings. Oulu is from 1605, so it's even younger, in fact barely older than New York City. Plus Oulu was a tiny place until fairly recently; at the end of the 19th century Oulu only had some 15,000 people, which automatically means most of the building are very new. Still, I recall you saying you want to travel all over Europe, so you'll get your dose of the old world eventually.

@@Settiis Poor take for sure, but i think more developed is also poor take. Oulu is actually bigger city than Turku, by population and population density. @@johanneskoskela384 Development is good across Finland infrastructure wise, but southern cities like Turku, Tampere or Helsinki and the smaller cities surrounding them are definitely more developed than northern cities and the difference will be even more drastic in the future due to domestic immigration. There has just been too long and big habitation in the area that some form of agriculture, industry or habitation has effected almost every place. Some effects can n be seen also almost everywhere else since no part of the country has been without any effects. But outside towns and cities there used to be much more places, where you could go and not immediately notice signs of humanity. I had the privilege in my childhood to live in places, where I could experience something like it in only a walking distance from my home. Moving to more city like places was a big disappointment which has stayed with me.
2:37 That part of the water is called hartaanselka, until 2011 it was the sea, but it became an official river. I know based on my work trips in that area you can see how high the sea is at any given time unless there is more water flowing through the dam than usual. Not lake, but backwater and the backwater turns into the sea after about half a kilometer.
According to international definitions, that point is the sea, but the city of Oulu has had to fiddle with definitions in order to get the fishing rules to their liking.

Also when you walk further up there was something like a water fall
You need to take a train to southern Finland. Lapland and north of Finland is very different to south. Stop in Tampere, Turku and Helsinki. All worth of poking around and having different vibes. Turku is its best in the summer. In the summer you should also head to mid east of Finland, like Kuopio or Savonlinna, since the lake district is beautiful.
It's nice you're exploring Finland starting from the top. On your way down to the bottom you can see the Finnishness slowly dissolving. =)
What a poor take, Finland looks the same no matter where you are, the only difference is the southern cities are more developed.
@@Settiis Poor take for sure, but i think more developed is also poor take. Oulu is actually bigger city than Turku, by population and population density. The difference is that Oulu is spread on a massive are of suburbs, instead of building the city centre larger. But the overall development is definitely on same scale everywhere in Finland.
@@johanneskoskela384 Development is good across Finland infrastructure wise, but southern cities like Turku, Tampere or Helsinki and the smaller cities surrounding them are definitely more developed than northern cities and the difference will be even more drastic in the future due to domestic immigration. Young people want to move to the large cities which drives investments to those areas, so the growing demand is met, which in turn attracts even more people, and so forth.
If you wanna catch up with another content creator from Oulu, drop me a message! 👍🏻
That's river :)
Nice to see a video from Oulu! Unfortunately the video is so shaky it's hard to watch.
How about visiting Utsjoki, the most northern municipality in Finland.
Who knows, perhaps you find some New York there too🤔😂
(sorry, I have visited only airports and Manhattan very briefly between flights in New York City. My last visit to Oulu was a long time ago too)
When visiting Oulu you have to eat at Kauppuri 5 at Kauppurienkatu 5. It's definitely one of top 3 burger places in Finland.
You MUST go and see the lakes! and go in!! After Sauna!!! ..though in the summer, I'm not that mad. But many are..
I am visiting Lappland (and also northern norway) in march. can not wait for that to happen. Any recommendations from Kolari upwards?
Thank you❤ 12:44
the only annoying background noise is the elevator music that you really need not to put in there. sometimes ambient noise is much more desireable. i already know how elevators sound :)
I used to work in that McDonalds 💗
🤯
The second pronounciation of Oulu (at the very start). Was fluent
U should visit espoo or helsinki theres even more people
Isn't less dense population the major benefit of Finland. So why bother visiting more populated areas, which have been spoiled.
@@just42tube Espoo and Helsinki are not spoiled. They are small towns If you compare them to many other cities in the world.
@@blackcoffeebeans6100
When I moved to Helsinki about 40 years ago, it was already spoiled compared to the more rural areas where I have lived.
People are trashy creatures always.
@@blackcoffeebeans6100
If you're saying that the Helsinki Capital area isn't completely spoiled, I agree.
But you can't walk in a forest and hope to see no signs of human activity or trash. If nothing else, there is likely to be some traffic notices from a distance.
Very little, almost none, of the area is in untouched natural state.
Ye its water
The building you thought to be a museum is the city library! :)
I love Oulu
Greetings from Oulu! Hope you liked your visit
I’m official moving to Finland! Soon
Thats my hometown, im also originally from lapland near Sodankylä. Finland is a good place to live, good you liked Oulu.:)
That’s cool
So cool you came to visit Oulu!! I hope Oulu was good to you❤️
Oulu = New York confirmed!!
Nice video! I'm going to Oulu too in like two days
That mcdonalds used to be a bar long time ago.
oulu.
That boat "thing" is a restaurant/bar Bootti (My friend owns it). It is mostly a summer place but it might be open at winter on some occasions. You should take a visit again next summer.
jätkä flexaa sillä että kaverillas on baari😂
Happy to hear that you liked my home city! You're always welcome again :)
Thank you
You had a great camouflage with your surroundings at the first 1 min! 😉🤣
😂
Are you coming Jyväskylä soon?
I was born in Oulu!
Your second try at Oulu is pretty good pronounciaton! Glad you liked our little city:)
The story about mcDonald's is that the company actually tried to buy that building, but they were refused. At least at some point it was the only location in the world McDonald's were renting instead of owning.
😯
Now I want to go to McDonald's after reading your story. I have been there a few times though. It would feel different after having a story attached to the visit 😃
Liked this! ❤️
My hometown.
go to utsojoki or kilpisjärvi
