  • Texans coaching news is starting to heat up as Nick Caserio & DeMeco Ryans are planned to meet with 3 more coaches to interview for the Texans offensive coordinator position. Bill Lazor was a senior assistant coach for the Texans this season and was the 2nd person on staff, the other being Jerrod Johnson, to get an interview. The Texans also announced interviews for Washington Commanders QB coach Brian Johnson & Minnesota Vikings assistant QB coach Grant Udinski. Chat Sports host Jeremy Chuggs breaks down why all 3 of the Texans offensive coordinator candidates would be a huge risk for the Texans this season.

    Commanders Report host Jack Sperry on coach Brian Johnson:
    “Brian Johnson comes from the Urban Meyer tree of the college spread offenses under Dan Mullen both at Mississippi State and Florida before taking the QB Coach job with the Eagles. When he was promoted to OC, he ran a very simplistic, ‘college-esque’ spread system with lots of screens, simple spread route concepts from shotgun, and not a lot of pre-snap motion. This year, he’s been learning under Kliff Kingsbury, who did a great job modernizing the Air Raid style of offense to the NFL with multiple RB sets, pre-snap motion, and full field progression reads to better suit that kind of system to the NFL game.”
    Albert Breer on Grant Udinski:
    “The first thing you may notice about Udinski is his title, which is unique. He started his coaching career under Matt Rhule, who hired him at Baylor and took him to the Carolina Panthers. On the advice of veteran assistant Brian Angelichio, Kevin O’Connell poached him in 2022.
    From there, Udinki went from assistant to the head coach/special projects to assistant quarterbacks coach to his current title. And each little step was taken in an effort by O’Connell to keep Udinski on the staff as long as he could...even if that meant having to work around already having a very solid offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach on the payroll. The head coach did it because the reality was Udinski had become his right-hand man, and enough folks around the NFL had come to know his value to a surging Vikings program.

      To be creative and make use of all players and positions. Call plays to the strength of your Offense.
      e.g. Schultz was so massive in CJs first season. This past season he was rarely used....

      Ability to adapt to defenses and the ability to speak that language to our QB. Someone who can teach Stroud to read coverages and defenses and make small route adjustments and not try to force a play where the defense has you beat before the snap.

    I want to see an OC give CJ more freedom at the line of scrimmage and get the plays out faster so proper adjust can be made for blocking. Fixing the Oline is also a must but that will probably be addressed by the Oline coach. I also want to see what Nick Casserio does in the draft and free agencies. We need interior line men, WRs, TE and RB depth.

    🤔🤔🤔 🤔🤔 Honestly, I'd rather have Chip Kelly or Jeff Nixon but not Nick Caley. Nick Caley would probably run something very similar to Sean McVey, which is still too close to the Shanahan system. The issue is a lot of defensive coordinators have started to figure out the Shanahan system. Had this been 5 to 10 years ago, I'd be fine with a Nick Caley, because the Shanahan system was still very effective. Plus, Jeff Nixon runs some kind of spread scheme within his offense, which would possibly help CJ pick up blitzes better and get the ball out faster.

    • @TexansTV
      @TexansTV  9 днів тому +1

      Brian Johnson would be an intriguing option for what you want because he runs a scheme similar to the Eagles and Commanders which spreads the ball out more compared to the Shannahan scheme

    • @Tyler_Kent
      @Tyler_Kent 9 днів тому

      Jeff Nixon isn’t the answer imo. I’m a Baylor fan so I’m very familiar with him. And I appreciate what he did with the O in 2019 and I’m sure Syracuse fans appreciate 2024. The competition for both those years was not remotely close to what he faced when interim at Carolina and what he’d face in 2025. He’s not a pro OC. Rhule let him try after he fired Brady and he wasn’t good enough. This was after he thrived as OC vs a weak b12 in 2019 and bf he thrived vs a weak ACC in 2024. I have a very strong “no” on him bc I just don’t think he’s a guy who can give the Texans an advantage.
      And I think it’s a stretch to object to a McVey guy bc that system is close to Shanahan system which DCs have started to figure out. Did u see what LA did with their offense this past yr? Way overachieved - ie not figured out at all. McVey has done more with less than anyone in the league over the last few yrs. They were supposed to be rebuilding yet have not only not been awful, they’ve been very good on offense.

    Main things for an OC: Good Leader, Creative Play Caller, and Good Player Developer.
    I would be good with Caley or Nixon. i like Caley a little more for the Patriots experience and the McVay creative factor, but I like the experience of Nixon a little more. So they are almost a tie for me. But would love Udinski on the staff, as the "next in line" guy. And he has ties to Nixon at Baylor and Carolina.

    It is easy for us on the sideline to speculate and assume. The cold hard facts are. 1. We can want C.J. to run more all we want but running quarter backs are born, not made. Could you imagine Dan Marino running more, Joe Montana or any of those pocket quarterbacks ?? You just can't expect a yard bird to fly like an eagle. Stick with what he do and can do as well as what HE WANTS TO DO. 2, We can look at these candidates resumes and expectations all we want but if the Texans don't get a quality offensive line we are stuck on stupid.
    Great lines make great coaches, not great coaches make great linemen. They have to have that dog in them and muscle. Right now we have busboys.

    O-line coach. Seems the Texans have a hard time evaluating offensive line talent or coaching it up

    Cole Poppovich, being the next O-line coach after being an assistant during the last season's, abysmal performance is a complete joke.

    We just needs a guy who can run situational offensive. Slowick was way too predictable. Thats the name of the game. If you aren't predicable you can get your players in the right position to get the offense to score. That was our biggest problem. Execution. Points. We always has close games. That BOTHERED TF out of me. Fairbairn was our leading scorer. That says it all
