    My aunt had a pet raccoon when I was a kid (back in the 80s when people were less concerned about keeping non-releasable animals as pets) and he destroyed everything he could reach in her house and was very bitey and stinky overall. Don't try keeping a raccoon, they're always wild no matter how friendly Ringo looks and all that cute shredding, biting and grabbing he's doing is way less cute when it's stuff you don't want turned into a raccoon toy

    I had a friendly relationship with a wild raccoon for a few years. Ringo reminds me of him. He'd come by to visit me when I was on my porch sometimes. We'd just hang out. Sometimes he'd bring me little bits of trash or food scraps. I'd sometimes give him some of whatever I was eating. Definitely not a pet, but I liked him anyway.

      I have a similar type of relationship with a female raccoon. She started coming around last year and I was so excited to see her again this spring.

      Definitely not a pet. You are right. Jesse is a rehabber, I think .

      @@ursulasmith6402 sort of similar. To my knowledge, none of the animals at animal wonders, her company, are in rehabilitation to be released. That's the usual aim of animal rehabilitation facilities. She takes in animals that, for one reason or another, cannot be released into the wild and trains them to be ambassadors. They do presentations where people learn about the animals and their ecosystems.

    Thank you Jessi, needed this. Just put down my baby girl (15yrs) cat. She was/is my familiar. She went everywhere with me, and taught me a lot. Introduced me to animal behaviouralism. She once a street feral cat, and became a loyal companion. Many of my coworkers and Vet did not think possible.
    How do you get over a close animals death? Maybe a video of that may help others. Idk. Take care.

    • @InfectedChris

      The senior special needs cat we got from the rescue used to be feral and needed to have a very calm environment because she was scared and didn't like anyone except me. The only person she would curl up next to was me.
      I'm so sorry though. It really is just a thing that needs time. You will never forget her, but the pain will get better over time.

    This gave me a good idea for raccoon toys based on Egyptian tomb technology I was learning about. Keys and locks triggers and levers used to hide valuables. These could be incorporated into a toy that changed consistently in small incremental ways so that the answer was not always the exact same. Start simple and then add difficulty. Start with a wooden key with 5 pins. Once he figures that out. Change the combination so he has to move the pins in the key to the right height to open the lock. Several other simplified puzzle locks that could be used. I've seen the raccoons getting in locked rooms and garbage bins. They are smart when they are motivated.

    • @DonnaBrooks
      @DonnaBrooks Рік тому

      Oh! Yes! I think puzzles w/ latches, levers, etc. sounds like a great idea! I don't quite understand the design you described where he would be moving pins to "the right height", but the concept is good. A simpler version of this would be to put bits of food under piles of small branches or small smooth stones so he would need to move things. That would make a lot more mess, though, which would need to be cleaned up, but it would be similar to digging and foraging for food in the wild. But making different types of wooden boxes with different mechanisms to get to the food would be stimulating for him and would be a lot easier to clean up!

    Our raccoons are such cute and goofy critters. I have Blink cameras in a few places outside, and one of the cameras faces a section where I put a few veggies out for whoever wants them, which is usually deer and opossums, or woodchucks during the day.
    One night I put out some tomatoes, and since raccoons couldn’t care less about tomatoes they decided to, well, play with them. It was hilarious watching them smell them, roll them around… even with their back feet, trying to stand on them…. on all fours like a cartoon circus elephant on a ball.. seriously the funniest thing ever. And some food they’re very suspicious of… like cubed sweet potatoes or dish of applesauce.
    They also went poking around in a few empty peanut shells until the little skins were stuck to their noses.
    They’re nature’s little clowns. Love watching them.

  • @annak2922
    @annak2922 Рік тому

    How about bringing him another rescued raccoon? Raccoons really need contact with other raccoons to be happy. Your raccoon lives in a cage. He would benefit from having a brother or sister.

    • @animalwondersmontana
      @animalwondersmontana  Рік тому

      Thank you for your concern. Ringo was raised alongside his sisters, who were successfully released back into the wild. Unfortunately, Ringo did not follow in his sisters' footsteps but instead formed a bond with the rehabber and became habituated to humans. He was then deemed nonreleasable since he would likely come too close to human houses looking for food and attention if he was released. Maybe in the future we'll be able to find a raccoon companion that he would enjoy sharing his space with. Until then, we'll continue providing him a safe place to live and lots of good food and toys to keep him healthy and happy.

    • @DonnaBrooks
      @DonnaBrooks Рік тому

      No, you may NOT bring an animal to BREED with any animal! These animals are not there to BREED! They are not pets & not baby producers! It's reprehensible for you to breed wild animals just because YOU want animal babies or to make more animals to sell. AWM is there to serve non-releasable wildlife & exotic pets who need a home because they have been surrendered, confiscated, abandoned, etc. and need a home. Many are special needs animals, like Zema, Kemosabe, or Ophelia.
