Hey mate, Great reaction. I have this song on cassette tape, I bought at a record fair in 87 I think....bootleg version. He wasn't fearful of breaking the expected setlist, of course he was aware of his listeners expectation etc, but what public eye artist isn't? No, as a long standing follower of his work I can truly say he was free. Some people over analyse and end up sounding like some pseudo music critic. Good job Brian mate, I enjoy you're facial expressions, that's how a musician reacts.

I'm going to sidestep entirely the argument about which version of this song is the best and focus totally on this performance. And I'm going to concentrate more on how this is happening more than what is happening... I believe a lot of what Prince allowed use to witness as an audience was highly curated. HIGHLY curated. It was honed over hours of rehearsal behind closed doors, perhaps shown to small audiences at Paisley Park in order to gauge the impact, and only released to us after he had thoroughly market-tested the material. Now that's not say it is inauthentic. He's a master of creation and he's testing things out. He isn't afraid to put the work in and spend time bettering himself for the sake of the audience. This feels like he has 75% assessed this and he's left the 25% to the moment. What happens on the guitar seems very much in the moment to me. And because of that it either soars or it merely flies... And that's for the listener to decide. Anything Montreux 2009 is always going to be special.
This whole Montreaux show is my top Prince show. Empty Room is my favourite from the show. 👌💜💜💜
