I was a KTM dealer in the US for 25 years. They have allot of amazing people working for them and we have built lasting friendships. When they bought Husky and started making white KTMs it was all about market share in the off road field, Then they start with Gas Gas and make red KTMs and it worked at first thanks to Covid but now it all is coming back to roost. World economics and market saturation is crippling them.
Years ago when I visited the factory they said half the worlds racing budget was for Dakar now they race Moto GP with KTM and GAS GAS. No matter how much Red Bull helps it has to be straining there resources. My take is cut back on brands and racing, Take care of your reliability problems that have alienated so many customers because without them you will go bankrupt.

The other point too, is that there was reasons why the brands they bought, were available for purchase too. You can't just absorb and prop up a number of failing (financially) companies, without being caught up in the the same situations that were already plaguing those companies... There just isn't as much customer dollars being thrown around for higher quality bikes these days. Global financial pressures have a reasonably high number of people in first world countries, working poor, and struggling to meet their basic needs (food, utilities and transport etc l

The problem is, they can't. I remember when they introduced the KTM duke 250 in my country to fight the MT25 and Ninja 250. Just to get shiddid on by a 150cc underbone that has better power to weight ratio, better handling, and to make it even more painful, optional quick shifter that is comparable to the 600s. To add sulfur to the wound, it got blasted to oblivion with Kawasaki releasing the ZX25R that also killed the 390s at the same price.

It is no wonder KTM are going under. I can only account for my awful experience. Brand new 1290s that had issues from the moment I left the showroom. Serious oil leak. 7 weeks even to get the bike into the showroom due to a huge shortage of techs across the UK. 3 months to resolve the oil leak, so they say. I rode home. Same oil leak. KTM had the bike for another 2 months. I rode bike home unbelivably same oil leak. The dealer and whole UK KTM network see you as a problem not a frustrated customer. After 8 months and legal advice I returned the bike to KTM and got a full refund. Basically Rejecting the goods due to above issues. They was not happy. I am aware I am not the only one that was in this position. What they could not replace was 8 months of biking lost.

I had a test ride on an 890 adv at my local KTM dealer last week. I noticed when looking around the showroom that 3 of the bikes in there appeared to have small puddles of oil/coolant underneath them. I was pretty miffed to be honest, brand new bikes on the showroom floor and they had what appears to be leaks from the engine!
Kinda put me off buying one now, the bike I test rode was great, but after reading lots of horror stories about the camshafts and coolant leaks etc on most bikes I might look at something else.
It's a shame, as for the money the KTM's have a spec which usually surpasses their competitors.

Purchased a "24" 300SX last year. First KTM I purchased was a 2011 450SXF which I still have and I also own a 2012 250SX and a 2015 450SX-F. The bikes are becoming more difficult to maintain now often requiring a laptop using proprietary software to troubleshoot. They are complicating these bikes adding features that nobody wants! Driving the prices up and now using more and more non-European parts like the Taiwanese KYMCO cylinder on my new 24. What's the point of buying a KTM anymore when half the bike uses outsourced parts from Asia? Might as well just buy one of the big four Japanese bikes and save some money! Beta and Sherco also use a lot of outsourced parts. I'm 68 years old now and unlikely to buy another new bike from any manufacturer but things sure have changed since I first started riding dirt bikes back in the 60's!

    • @Gud-y2s
      @Gud-y2s 2 місяці тому +4

The problem is that the big four old dinosaurs doesn't care about the market in different ways. They basically only offer 250f and 450f mx and then slightly modified they call it enduro. Still not the widely popular 350f, still no 2-strokes (except the yz 250 that apparently exists on some markets). The only japanese bike i would consider for woods enduro is the Yamaha wr 250. There's even a company that build enduro bikes with Honda base in 300 and 400 versions, but they still don't have a 6 speed wide ratio gearbox. While KTM brands, Beta, Sherco, TM racing all have a wide variety of bikes built from the ground up for enduro.

Correct -- and the camshaft issue is just the latest in long-running issues that they've denied, ignored, or just fixed quietly in the background in model updates while forcing impacted customers to pay for repairs, with warranties worth nothing... rocker arms and cam chain tensioners on 690 engines, failed fuel pumps on multiple models, poor electrics due to lack of QC, speedos full of condensation. All of this is fine, but what many have experienced is rude, arrogant dealers.
I had a failed fuel pump within months on a 690... dealer said they would replace under warranty but I had to pay labour of $500. So I bought an aftermarket one and did it myself. Same story with cam chain tensioner after 6 months. I had to strip the bike to properly terminate the wiring loom -- bare wires everywhere.
Fantastic performing bikes... loved my 690 and by the time I sold it, I had got it into reliable condition after a lot of wrenching and mods. Much as I like their bikes, I wouldn't buy from KTM again though.

I don't disagree that KTM is having trouble and needs to up it's game(particularly in Quality Control and design). BUT, at the start of the video you say that KTM lost 2.5 billion dollars. From what I can tell, the chart that you show is their market capitalization(share price vs number of shares) so they didn't actually LOSE 2.5 billion dollars, their share prices just went down a LOT which reduced their market cap by 2.5 billion (still not great) so not the same thing at all as losing 2.5 billion dollars in earnings.

KTM have had ample time to sort this and do the honourable thing and extend the warranty to at least give comfort to those who bought in good faith quite apart from wishing to have their values remain. @@therawlifefamily I beg to differ. Low interest rates from a couple of years ago lured people in to buy coupled with massive government money printing and a huge migration of people (due to a couple of reasons) caused a buying frenzy. Purchases "over asking price" became the norm. Real estate pricing is based on recent sales so prices shot up. Prices are now at the point where most people given their income can't qualify for a loan even at low interest rates. Also anyone who buys a house based on the "payment" is an idiot. If prices fall even a little given the cost of selling and the low down payments that people who buy based on payments make you will be very likely upside down for years to come. I know this is true as I lived through a similar situation in the mid to late 80's.

Guys, if a company has a recall that is paid mostly from insurance money, not out of pocket, that is not a big financial problem, but not owning a well-known camshaft (2019-2024 and going) issue is brand damaging. Now KTM gets the taste of how the market reacts to things like this. For India and Taiwan /Asia, there are the 390, 125, 200? Dukes, and ADVs, but that is not a reason to not make proper bikes (I mean big ccm ones) for the rest of the world. European and American markets are also huge, but we are tired of paying gold money for sh!t. I own a 790 Duke but I am more and more disappointed with how things are handled with the camshaft issues. Now they are replacing damaged camshafts/followers or even heads with goodwill if it is "heavily" damaged, but if it is "not that bad" you have to pay the dealer for the disassembly and assembly. For me, it is a basic step is to get all bikes back for a checkup for FREE (company insurance will pay) and if it is damaged then replace damaged parts, if not then make the customer happy with the good news. That will build the brand and the reliability back. It looks like lately they will not want it to restore...
Thank you for your thoughts, Rober!

It would be nice if we could get a less expensive and easier to work on bike. Just a plain old carb with a two stroke engine and good suspension. It doesn’t need to be road legal, we have trails to ride. Sounds like a Yamaha yzx would do it. Hmm, cheaper, easier to work on, I think KTM used to build them like that, could be an easy fix

It’s starting to look like it could be low oil pump pressure causing the oil supply problems to the cams , lots of 790s/ 890’s coming up with less than 26 psi at idle and 50 psi at 7000 rpm which is what’s required by KTM’s own workshop manual.

I’ve been riding ktm for 24 years, back when they were the odd European bike that would wash out the front end. Last bike was a 2023 300xc, the absolute best 2 stroke I’ve ever had….except it developed a random bog at 20hr. I battled it for 27 hours. I jump a lot ride on the pipe, so the bog eventually put me in hospital. For 27 hours I replaced, adjusted, went back and forth with the dealer, went back and forth with ktm, nothing helped. The only thing left was to replace the ecu and tps. But after it bogged out on a jump and broke 2 ribs and busted my spleen I had enough. Ktm just didn’t care, they said take it to a dealer. The dealer and 2 other service managers at other dealers said with everything I did there wasn’t much they could do, and knowing I jump this bike they had reservations on getting involved. It’s gone, I’ll never buy another new ktm. On a 2024 yz250 now. It’s great to be jumping again and crapping myself every time I go to blip the throttle on a jump face. Ktm’s tech(not dealership) said only way to fix it was if if it’s hooked up to the laptop when it did it as it didn’t throw codes. Just happy that craps over. Shame, I do miss the 300. I’m currently looking for a pre tpi ktm/husky 300 with very low hours.
On edit, I am loving the yz250. It took a few hours and was an adjustment but back to jumping and I have to say, the kyb is incredible, especially compared to wp.

Your bogging problem is most likely caused by a malfunctioning Crankcase Pressure Sensor (CCPS). This $50 part usually degrades slowly, sending an improper signal to the ECU which then commands the fuel injection system to inject an improper amount of fuel. This has been problematic with both the TPI and later TBI systems. The sensor was redesigned for the TBI bikes with a larger port, bigger hose, and easier replacement, but still is problematic. Mine began to degrade at 135 hours on my 2024 TE 300. The degradation doesn’t show up as a no start or fault code. I just replace the CCPS at 100 hours or at the first sign of trouble. Consider it a regular service item like the spark plug or air filter. I have 175 hard hours on my bike in less than a year and this has been the only failure.

No. I went the distance trying to fix this, with service managers and ktm themselves. I ran this bike hard, on the pipe unlike most weekend worriers. Heres a list of stuff done over 3 months..fyi, the ccps and pickup filter are rarely the issue. My advice is don’t run the tbi in a mx or sx situation.
Stuff done on my 2023 300xc that didnt fix bog…
-Replaced inline fuel filter multiple times
-Replaced fuel pump pick up filter($60)
-Tested old fuel pump(48psi) and replaced with new fuel pump, with part number ending in 200(supposedly updated)($275)
-stripped down and checked wire harness, also with bike running trying to move wires to find short.
-ended up cutting open wire harness and checking for shorts on main trunk and throttle body branch. Looked beautiful in there. Everything under new electrical tape has been looked at.
-pulled all connections looking for issues
-changed spark plug 3 times, plugs always looked good, never fouled one, currently tried a 7 range plug.($25)
-had dealer update software and look for codes, there were none($130)
-did top end(used vortex oem piston)and pulled and cleaned power valve at 37 hr per ktm customer service advice($350). Old rings still measured the same ring gap as new ones. Used .62mm base gasket.
-Set power valve to 48mm(z dimension)
-Adjusted tps to .400 volts, reset tps with wake up connector and 3 throttle twists
-recalibrated power valve on both maps multiple time
-changed crank case sensor twice, even used sealant on last one to be sure wasn’t leaking($120)
-current compression is 208 psi, was 196 before top end at 37hr
-current deck height is between 0.00 and .008, squish is like 2.15
-checked stator- .9 ohms cold, 1.2 ohms hot.
-pulled injectors inspected and cleaned externally
-tried different fuels, one was an ethanol free 93 octane

The 6th gear is almost useless on the highway, you can't drop the rev to below 6k on 6th gear or it will take a long time to rev back up. Well, the 'market' is a competition on its own. It's all about demand and supply, and if KTM won't supply then others will. Like with any business, if there is a demand it will be supplied by someone, and there may be competition between several suppliers. Looks like KTM has played out its roll here in the west, moving on to asia to try that market, will it succeed? Maybe - It doesn't matter who supplies the bikes as long as the bikes are good enough and people have the money to buy.

They started cheaping out on WP suspension componentry, single function forks, air forks, using Mikuni Carbs instead of Keihin, TPI motors that need rebuilds every 30-40 hours or they run weird, enduro frames that feel like they came of the MX/SX production line, Husquvarna's and Gasgas's with BrakeTec brakes instead of Brembo. And Price tags that would suggest they were some boutique brand that made 500 bikes a year. If they just kept just making the 2013 KTM300 with fresh plastics they would have been sitting happy now. They did it to themselves. But, I still don't won't them to go broke and start turning out junk like Honda

Basically, this is what Japanese 4 saw in the mid 2000s. They realized that Europe and NA market is shrinking, new riders are no longer interested in “performance bikes”, and emerging markets are huge on practicality with small displacement. All 4 brands made moves in the 90s and early 2000s and have already matured into the market. KTM, BMW, and Triumph are considered rather late to the market and they have to ride on the back of Bajaj, CJ Moto, and other local brands in order to move into the emerging market, where as companies like Honda has developed and nurtured local companies (like Hero in India) and well established themselves to all these markets. They are now pulling themselves out of the racing and other sport events as they no longer see ROI in the investments - MotoGP/WSBK is considered dying sport (my wife’s company sponsors both series).
To give you heads up, as of 2023, the smallest of the Japanese 4 - Suzuki - its profit (Not revenue, PROFIT!) from one major market in country of India matches entire global sales of KTM.
