      +andy.tv Nice, I wasn't a big fan of them in the past because some of my favorite things about metal is the lyrics and how the vocals concatenate with the instruments throughout the song. But, my friend showed my erroneous ways and I've been listening both types ever since.
      Here's some suggestions that got me really into it:
      Pomegranate Tiger (my personal favorite)
      Animals as Leaders (a classic)
      Cloudkicker
      Intervals
      Their Dogs Were Astronauts
      Sithu Aye
      Widek
      Plini
      Shokran (has an instrumental version of their album Supreme Truth, though I do prefer the vocals versions just a little more.)
      and Nemertines. (This is definitely an extreme one. I've found that you either like or hate it. The best way I've come to describe it is your personal horror movie soundtrack. Because whenever I listen to it walking at night, it makes you feel like you're in a horror movie- and I love it!)
      Well, those recommendations should be a good starting point.
      Have a nice day.

    Pretty good I'll admit. In particular, them riffs. unf. But there are problems in this album that are pretty present.
    This is weird because the highs are also the lows of this album so I'll try to make it make sense. The longer songs feel too long. "The One" in particular felt like it was dredging on forever and the only way to keep the listener's attention is to keep transitioning to a new movement. Now I'm certain that's not the reason it keeps changing, but it does feel like it. Overall, they get repetitive and boring only to be saved by scortching fast guitars and badass technical breakdowns.
    Another thing I find a problem with is that I keep drawing references from other prog metal bands. People like Ben Sharp (Cloudkicker) and Intervals is where I'm hearing this the most. It feels like such a similar sound that I can't help but wonder if this is a side project by Sharp or something. That being said, like I said in my first point, a lot of these songs are saved by incredible displays of incredible guitar work and a really unexpected set of blast beats (that I actually liked a lot) and that cool jazzy sax transition.
    To wrap it all up, you (people or person?) have insane talent. The music is polished TO PERFECTION, but the problem is that it's so easily recognizable, it kind of destroys some of the beauty of it. Your better showcases of talent are just that, showcases. What I'm saying is this: Periphery always change it up with their style, Animals as Leaders have Abasi's famous tapping, Mastadon is known for blending pop, heavy metal, and prog metal, Tool are known for blending psychedelic sounds and self-realization into their music. Now what do you do? Are you going to be "a prog metal band" or will you be Thessa, a band known for ____?
    On that note I'll stop. Good luck with you (again person or people) and all that you do. I hope the best because you have the talent to be known.

    • @ThessaRecords
      @ThessaRecords  10 років тому +4

      Hey dude thanks for the input. Thessa is a one man band project. I agree some songs can be long and repetitive that's because I see the album as a whole, This phenomenon will not be present on my new material, I now have a very different approach (Exile material is pretty old actually).
      Concerning musical references I won't deny I love both Cloudkicker and Intervals. Though I think you are calling my Post-Rock influences "Ben sharp influences". Ambiant guitars, clean passages with chill melodies are part on the post rock movement (which I am a big fan of). It's like saying to a guy who is using palm muting it sounds like James Hetfield's side project.
      I'm also an "harmony" guy and I think that's what you are calling "intervals influences". I took six years of modern harmony classes in music school and since I am a sucker for harmonizing everything. I really love to have a wall of melodies working with each other in a whole like in my song "On The Edge". Also harmonies are mostly determined by note intervals so I think it's pretty normal it might sounds like the band "Intervals" which is based on Aaron Marshall's guitar mastery !
      It is the first time I hear from someone my music has no "identity" tbh, most of thetime people say they can recognize my music in a few seconds haha. That's your opinion and I respect that.
      You should also check my two other albums : The Other Side which is an ambiant progressive metal album and Infinite Progress which is a post rock / electronic album. They are both available on bandcamp :: thessarecords.bandcamp.com/
      Apologies for my english. cheers !

    • @mynamedoesntmatter9013
      @mynamedoesntmatter9013 10 років тому

      No don't worry about the English, it's just fine. And I see your reasoning with Exile, a lot of people try something that's not just a single, but an entire album that blends together. Trust me, it's beautiful.
      As for the influences, I suppose it's more my opinion then if I'm the only one who said that your music is extremely similar to Cloudkicker. I'm going through The Other Side as we speak. I like it so far.(:
      Just trust me when I say there's a lot of people who I've listened to that I immediately stopped listening to at 2 minutes in because their style is so boring and similar to other, bigger artists out there. The difference is I see that you're setting yourself apart.
      This album is old, I can tell because I can draw influences from it within the first song. Trust me when I say you do have potential and a serious style that's evolving. If I had money, I'd honestly buy your discography now. When I can, I will. Especially Infinite Progress. I like it a lot.
      Either way, I hope you don't take this criticism harshly. I really mean it for the best because you have a lot of talent for just a solo project. I wish all the best of luck for you and I'll be watching and constantly listening to your new stuff as you put it out.

      Matthew samson Hey there is nothing wrong with constructive criticism :) thanks for your input dude.

      I would like to make a quick interjection. I understand and agree with you that there is a heavy influence of generic concepts from prog metal but not everyone can possibly just disregard these. I would say Thessa shows a heavy amount of his influences as I imagine anyone will end up doing that because it is what draws someone to continue making music.
      To the point of repetitiveness I want to say that I would argue that these songs are for the most part perfect length. As someone who has a little understanding of composing music myself one of the hardest parts I have is taking into account how many times a particular phrasing is used. Each new phrasing becomes more addicting than the last, especially as you write it, and the only way to fully understand something to the fullest is by obsessing over it until you you can no longer gain anything new from it.
      Personally I feel like a majority of what you hear is long enough to keep making the point it needs to make without shortchanging you. Some of the songs I don't like as much I get tired of it quickly but I don't feel like I should interject my lack of affection to a song by saying it lasts too long (an example being the first half of constellations).
      I think that this album is making it into my album rotation, it has some great elements to it that make it worth listening to more than once. I will have to listen to your newer material, since I love the guitar work. Personally I would want to see a bit more depth to the drums. They fit well, but drum phrasings could used to change the feel in and out of the jazz style a bit more and could make this more interesting. Just a thought, and I will say I'm bias towards a more jazz style of drumming. Love the music and looking forward to the rest of your work.
