For those of you who want an actual answer, there could be a couple different reasons why he does this.
    1) To agitate the water so he can see it better.
    2) To gauge the distance from the top to the water.
    3) To break the surface tension
(Long answer: Bonds form between the water molecules called hydrogen bonds. They form because the hydrogen/oxygen atoms are slightly negative or positive. Therefore, opposites attract and you get water tension. The rock breaks the bonds in order for a smooth contact with the water for the diver.)
Thank you to those who corrected me in the comments!

for someone who wants an actual answer, there are a few reasons. 1. when he throws it, it breaks the water tension so it wont feel like he hit a truck when entering the water. 2. when you throw a rock, it falls at a certain speed, and when you count, you can gauge how far the drop is. sometimes the depth perception from up high can feel weird, and this can reassure divers how big of a drop it is. 3. it was not the reason in any of these clips, but sometimes divers will break away loose rocks from a cliff they are jumping from. that way they have a more secure, and controlled takeoff. otherwise you could possibly get put into a coma if you hit the water the wrong way. you can also break bones... 4. as I said before, depth perception can be tricky, and if you are jumping out, throwing a rock can let divers know how far they need to jump, or simply just to know exactly where they hit so they can more successfully do tricks. or just to jump. they are being careful, thats all.
Edit: if someone actually read this, thank you. and I hope this helped :)

After finding out his wife was cheating with a local man Mr. Hertz did some mild social media stalking and found out where his wife and the mystery man would be going to meet eachother. Once he knew the location where they'd be he devised a way to get his revenge. Mr. Hertz would simply throw a rock off the bridge and take the man out with a swift blow to the head plunging to the depths below to confirm the kill directly after impact. Once the kill was confirmed he would then T-bag (also known as Skull F***) the mans lifeless body as he rose back to the surface as if he was a call of duty god popping up out of the water infront of his stunned and horrified wife and shouting "Tah Dah!!" causing her to go into shock and faint thus drowning to death. He would then swim away down river where he had his car waiting and go home as if he was never there. The whole thing would look like an accident leaving Mr. Hertz as the unsuspecting grieving husband but in reality he would be free of his cheating wife and rich off of the life insurance money. What you see in the first clip above is Mr. Hertz doing a test run of his plan trying to make sure he has the timing and angles down just right for the plan to work properly. The second clip is Mr. Hertz attempting to execute the plan but it goes wrong. He beomes too excited and enraged. Seeing red he throws the rock with extreme force missing both the man and his wife below. Mr. Hertz then proceeds to execute stage two of the plan jumping but when he reaches the edge he realizes that he missed the man so he decides he will Execute a triple 360 inverted face f*** on the man killing them both instantly Infront of his wife. It was later revealed in the autopsy report that the man Mrs. Hertz had been having an affair with was named Buster Himen.. he was 69 years old. Poor old bastard never knew what hit him. After the Incident the wife whose name was later revealed to be Anita went back to her maiden name Dickenme then later moved to Chappaqua, New York where she found a job working for the clinton family as a secretary before going missing the same day as the clintons chef after rumors began to surface she had been giving Mr. Clinton sloppy toppy on his giggle stick. Some thought Dickenme and the chef ran away together until the chef was found dead of drowning. Ms. Dickenme was never seen or heard from again... some say she killed the chef and is in hiding. Others say hillary had her killed out of jelousy. The truth is we may never know what happened to Anita Dickenme..

*For anyone wondering, throwing the rock before jumping, disrupts the stagnant (still, non flowing, flat surface) water to make it much much less painful when you hit the water after it’s been disturbed by the rock 😊 Basically newton’s law of movement; an object (in this case water) in motion remains in motion (or not in motion), until acted upon by an unbalanced object…. Aka the rock. Making it move to allow for more movement to occur more easily. In straight terms, if you throw something like a rock down to disrupt the water first, your less likely to “water flop” 😂🫨 The more you know 🌈*

It's the surface tension. Jump and forget to disturb the waters surface tension, bet you will throw a rock if u still walk good. But all clif diving do something to disturb still water. Waterfalls work good too. Doesn't take much but if you give a Dann about getting old with your body intact, you'll bomb a rock. When you jump you adjust yourself by watching the water come at you not a count to time. Timing is visual. I don't have to be pro to know that. You learn that by the time you start 10m jumps

It’s supposedly to break water surface tension so the water doesn’t resist you as hard soon entry. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure you’d have to basically be following the rock down for it to work tho bc the water surface will just form again quickly. That’s why at the Olympics, it is a constant mist for the diving events. I believe doing this actually serves the purpose of visualizing the free fall. you fall roughly the same speed of any rock, and cliff jumping often occurs at awkward, non conventional/practiced heights. So having something you can watch fall before you, to gauge the extra quarter and half seconds for rotation is huge. Obviously in this video, dudes are just throwing a rock and looking away/diving multiple seconds after the rocks contact with the water. I believe it’s just a collective habit of the cliff jumping community, and plenty people do it without any real thought into why it’s being done.

@@skoobyi i was just joking. Its actually because he checks the water for ice. if he dont have a thermostat on him he cant posibly know the temprature, and therfore he cant know if the water is frozen. So by throwing the rock he is 100% sure that theres no ice. In a case where there is ice the stone will make a hole in it that he can jump thru. Look at it as safety measures. This guy said in an interview «better safe than sorry»

@@stillcursed4135 Wrong again. The real reason is because “It breaks the surface tension. Water molecules H20 are dipolar, meaning one side of it has partial positive (hydrogen) and one partial negative side (oxygen). And since opposite charges attract each other, the water molecules will align hemselves in an ordered way to create a "surface", It's called hydrogen bonds. When they throw the stone this arrangement is disturbed, the water molecules become much more disordered, the bonds breaks and so does surface tension. When the diver jumps in, the impact will
become less hard because he isn't falling on a "surface".

The real reason they throw stones in is to break the barrier of the water surface. In the Olympics they spray the surface of the pool with water as diving in to still water is like hitting concrete. If the water has ripples, it absorbs the energy of the impact easier.
In short, the stone is taking all the impact from him.

It also gives us perspective of height and distance yo.
Sometimes 100ft looks lower than 70 from different launches.
Ricks and cliffs make everything look lower than it is, and big open and structured ramps look so soo much higher, so it’s good to know where you’re going to land roughly.
