i almost moved there in 2012 for a job, but went to pittsburgh pa area instead because i bought a nice house for 25,000 yes 25k which was cheaper than oregon at the time during the recession, the winters here are not that bad due to the micro climate, we do not get the heavy snow like cleveland,oh 2 hrs away
The cost now is absolutely insane . I bought a ranch style that was built in 56 for 66K . They say my house now is valued at around 700K . People in my neighborhood think they are sitting on a gold mine . Problem is these folks have no real concept that the cost across the board is insane . I am the last of the boomer generation where a simple job still provided a decent income to buy a house , car and the essentials . Also most jobs now do not have pensions or really any retirement benefits . I drove truck and made a descent living . Between my S.S. , pension and IRA . I am better off now than when I was working . Oh ….. I also was able to pay off my house 15 years early which saved me 103K in interest . People today are nowhere near as lucky as my generation was .

I live in Oregon . Believe me Salem is not that great . Towns like Scio and its covered bridges and friendly atmosphere is so much better .
