Sanctions: Do they work? Lessons learned from North Korea, Iran, Cuba, Venezuela | Business Beyond

- The international response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has focused on sanctions. Aimed at dealing a crushing blow to the country’s economy and its industrial base, they’re the policy tool of choice to punish aggression, especially for the United States. But how effective are they?
In this edition of Business Beyond, we look at countries with a significant history of dealing with sanctions, and how much - or how little - they’ve changed their behaviour as a result of this kind of coercion. What can North Korea, Iran, Cuba, and Venezuela tell us about the global effort to exert economic pressure on Russia?

Sanctions have not worked in all the countries you listed. Sanctions only make the average people hate those sanctioning their country.
Well, we hate THEM (their government, and anyone/everyone who supports that government) - and don’t want to BUY anything from them, SELL anything to them, or even TALK to them. They have proven themselves as unworthy of engaging or interacting with, in any form whatsoever. You call it “sanctions”, the rest of us call it moral integrity. Bottom line: 🖕🏼🇷🇺
They are the enemy - we don’t trade with the enemy - or anyone who still DOES trade with them.
Russia should cut off the gas. Europe will die in winter
@@hirendrall7215 lol Europe is less dependent on Russian gas than Russia is dependent on selling gas to Europe. Limiting buying oil and gas from Russia could be the new step.

Sanctions on Iran's economy have been in trouble for the past forty years
But sanctions also have positive points, one of which is making Iran independent of the outside world
You compare Iran and Saudi Arabia, they are much more dependent on the world, especially the West, militarily and economically than Iran.

Thank you DW. That was very educational. Because I have had that very question
Thanks for redoing the audio.
That North Korean announcer for the North Korean missiles driving by could defect and have a great career announcing football games, lol!
In my opinion the smaller the sanctioned country the less effect sanctions have, reason being a few backdoor deals will keep a small economy ticking whereas a huge country needs hundreds of Billions and thats not so easy to hide. Just my take and a viewpoint nobody seems to be mentioning.
Well China, Pakistan and India preparing a gaz import deal from Russia is not a good sign or sanctions working. Indeed it has miserable unintended consequences such pushing Russia into the China’s arm, once who used to be rivals in the past and will lead to an eastern concentration of power which is even more dangerous
Private company sanctions are huge... If one of a sudden half the big stores in your city close down and you cant buy technology like computer parts etc that has a huge effect.
@@MicroageHD china has everything including copies of other brands… Russia will sale oil to china
@@omarayoubi7861 Isnt it just great being intelligent ! we see things coming way before everyone else, the frustrating thing is we dont have the power to do anything about it.
Well if the sanctioned economy is big then is not going to work either. The trade war with China during Trump was a form of sanction, but the Chinese economy is so big that Trump couldn`t outright halt trade with China. And if you remember both nations were trading blow for blow until COVID kicked in and forces the USA to buy even more from China. The conclusion is your point is right sanction don`t on the smaller economy, but it is even less effective on a larger economy.
The problem is China and India also Mexico have not sanctioned Russia. For some reason you have a feeling Russia will find away to adjust. I believe this sanctions have a way of making economies more self sufficient . Necessity is the mother of all inventions. Remember Russia said it will come a point where sanctions will not matter anymore as they will have no effect. If I was Russia , I would take opportunity given by this sanctions to introduce the rouble as the currency of trade for all their commodities. Simply de dolarize completely.
Why did you mention only China, India and Mexico? With the exception of the West, only a few other countries have sanctioned Russia.
Countries not sanction Russia are not problem, you mindset of individual countries need to follow the West sanctions is against democracy.
@MSD Group India is weak🙂
@MSD Group No it's you who said "India and Mexico are weak"
German money still flowing to Putin. Shame!
Nicely researched and presented item on a complex but important topic. Thanks.
Love the funky hard base on this track .... really gets me in the mood for some economic sanctions!!
Why was the video privated?
Sanction alone won't likely lead to demise of Putin, but it sure means less shells and missiles being fired at Ukrainians. The US is also morally obligated to do so given the Budapest Memorandum, especially since US renegaded on militarily guaranteeing Ukraine.
Sanctions won't reduce shelling Ukraine by even a single bullet.
Sanctions simpley radicalize the situation, like that lady pointed out. No country ever sanctioned have changed their mind, instead we have a new generation from those countries growing to learn that the WEST made them poorer. It's a cycle of hatred, hostility and radicalism.

Agreed , sanctions hurt the common people more than regimes in power.
As country who claims to be the most powerful in the world(US). Putting sanctions on iranian people is really cowerd and cruel way to achieve (US)'s purpose
@@markward3981 the empires doesn't often really care about the people but it's all about sustainability of the empire... Works in both ways 😜
Sanctions are nothing but to halt the progress of others country for sometime at the end they also get what is required 👍👌
Best example is Iran
Shame you didn't mention what sanctions have done to Iraq.
I don't know but they give some satisfaction like You did something against Russia
Well, this shows all, sanctions doesn't reach it's goals.
I get from this video is that sanctions alone doesn't work, has to work together with other things like diplomacy. And the longer a country is sanctioned, the lesser effect it has because the country would find other way out.
@@loungingcat well that is based on sanctions history, are you seeing the west offering a a good,in Russia's perspective, diplomatic way out?cause I'm not , this has been a escalation conflict, the west is not being conciliatory, neither Russia.
@@lucasleao3482 well what is a better way then? Putin's requirements for ceasefire has been for Ukraine to put down their weapons and swear to never join NATO, and they keep attacking nonstop, what's the west to do now? In your mind, what is a good diplomatic way out, in Russia's perspective?
@@loungingcat mate, the diplomatic way out is being paved, the Ukrainian president already agreed to never join NATO,but he didn't pledge to demilitarise his country, cause that's simply a crazy ask of Russia. Well a good way out would be to the west recognize the Russian sphere of influence, cause the west constantly denied that to Russia, but that's more complicated than this. if they only be conciliatory to Putin it will give him the message that he can do whatever he wants. Usa and eu need to be tough yet conciliatory, cause Putin doesn't care about taking massive Ukrainian lives,he will escalate if he sees fit, and the price of the West standing up and being completely hostile to Russia is Ukrainian lives. Accepting to don't add Ukraine to NATO is a low price to keep a lot of Ukrainians alive, cause believe me when a I say a lot of newspapers are talking in a romanticise way about Ukraine winning, and that simply is not going to happen.
Yet I think the west should get a way to topple Putin via economic ways, his government is really inappropriate to stall peace.

Thats a better argument for the total occupation of russia, than an argument against sanctions.

These current sanctions are pretty extreme. I’m pretty sure they must have a pretty profound effect this time.
Not if the west is still paying billions to Russia for gas
The ruble has been demolished by the sanctions imposed. Russian economy is sent back to the USSR times. If that isn’t a profound effect, I don’t know what is.
@@paulkana4235 they’re cutting it off as we speak. All of the EU will be off Russian energy completely by the end of the year - sooner, if full-scale war breaks out, or if Putin turns off the taps now, as he is threatening to do. All three of those possible outcomes lead to the same result, however - the west is going to stop buying Russian oil and gas, 100%, over the course of this year - regardless of the pain it may cause in the short term. No, sanctions do not work! They definitely haven't worked in Cuba in over 60yrs! All they've done is kept most people poor, hungry n tired! N so many dependent financially on family outside of Cuba. If you think about it, it actually hurts the US n it's citizens just as much, if not more, financially. All that $ leaving the US, has actually kept the regime afloat for over 60yrs.The regime n there family live good, have nice homes, cars, travel the world, are nice n healthy with full stomachs! Fidel actually lived into his 90's n Raul will be 91 in May, they outlived many US presidents! While it's citizens have to spend long hours daily in long lines, in scorching 🥵 sun/heat for food n basic needs, leaving them tired n with little, to no energy for anything else. How does it benefits anyone, especially the US, when it constantly has to be donating food/meds to Cuba, n on top of that, deal with all the Cuban immigrants coming over, now more than ever, with the pandemic n the Russian war, since Russians play a big part in Cuba's economy. Bottom line is, that most intelligent countries see this, and don't understand why the US n Israel with all this evidence still insist on keeping the embargo in place for over 60yrs, and all it's overwhelming evidence of failure. For many years US farmers have tried to have the embargo lifted knowing the USA has lost out on Billions in trade with CUBA. So who do we have to thank for this unfortunate mess, none other than the few scorned FL politicians, that keep the threat of the state hanging over the presidential election! The worst part is these politicians in FL are mostly Cuban's that are keeping there own bothers/sisters hungry, poor n tired! Curious how they sleep at night, with full stomachs n a clear conscious... WAIT, DO POLITICIANS EVEN HAVE A CONSCIOUS!🤥🤥🤥

No heavily sanctioned country ever started a war. Just because they can't effort it any longer. However I'm not aware that they ever lead to a significant policy change.
that is false, its the reason japan struck the US in ww2
in fact trying to break embargos is one of the more common reasons to start one
@@catadoxas I'm not talking about reccently imposed sanctions. I was talking about already heavily imposed sanctions. You could argue that the SU was a country with long term sanctions that still fought wars.
Breaking sanctions is of course somethign that shifts the cost benefit calculation of a war towards aggression. It can even create a closing time window where war is still possible.
The difference between russia and north korea is that in north korea it's been there for so long, that people are used to it. Many young north koreans were born under sanction so they just don't know anything else. I saw another documentary where a north korean man told the journalist that he still believe that the Berlin wall is still there. Russian have been exposed to western culture for so long, it will be harder to suddenly prive them from everything. The sanctions should be coordinated and harder.
