  • Tips For buying Used Ford F100 Disc Brakes
    We bought disc brakes for our F100 almost two years ago. We look at tips on what to watch out for when buying Disc Brakes second had. We also talk about the aftermarket disc brakes briefly. We look at how to check the king pins on the I-Beams. We give recommendations on what parts of the disc brake front end you should get when you find and buy some.

    Good job. Thanks for the info on adjusting camber on these old trucks.

    Having separate parts and being possible 40 years old, out of pure safety I think I would take the whole thing apart and rebuild it. New rotors and bearings, rebuilt calipers and hoses, and rebuild the kingpins and replace the bushings. That way you could also sand or blast and powder coat or paint the control arms. It’s a project that could be done as money affords.

    Thanks for the information - I bought a 1972 Ford F-100 and it has the Front Disc Brakes and because of this video - my set came from a 77 - 79 F-100. I bought rotors for 1973 and will be putting them on - hope they fit.

      We may do that on the I beams that are coming out of the truck.

    Jeff I converted my 65 F250 to front discs awhile back. I searched for used parts in my area and came up empty. The only option for getting the needed parts used was to buy a donor truck and I didn't want to do that. So I started shopping for a kit. I ended up buying from CPP. In talking to them I was told that this kit wasn't always available because of the shortage of spindles. Explains my search failure. For anybody out there with an F250, the F100 disc brake kit will work. The I beams are the same between the two as well as the king pins. Down side is you will have 5 bolt at the front and 8 bolt at the rear if you still have the Dana 60 as I do. Great video, thanks!

      Thanks for the info. Who is cpp? Im in the same boat. I’ve thought about swapping a 9in to have matching bolt patterns. I’ve also read that they did make Dana 60s with 5 lug axles but they are pretty rare

    I remember converting my 70 F100 to disc brakes about a year ago. The installation went perfectly except for when I was bolting the tie rod ends. The disc brake setup came out of a 74 F100 and the thread of the tie rod on my 70 was not long enough for me to bolt it to the 74 spindle. Needless to say I ended up buying a whole new tie rod assembly for a 74 F100 because "while were here" the rubber bushings were shot. I also had to change out the master cylinder designed for a front disc brake setup in conjunction with a proportioning valve. Thanks for the info about the king pin stuff, that was something I totally did not think about when I had the I-beams out. 👍

    • @AutoRestoMod

    About the only place that can adjust camber on these trucks (like if you want to lower em with shorter coils) is a alignment shop that does box trucks and larger. A lot of bigger trucks have used beam type with king pin suspensions and have the ability to bend beams.
    Great show sir. 👍

    I was parts manager at a Ford dealership in the 90’s and we had some camber adjusters for twin I-beam suspensions, but I can’t remember the brand name. But an alignment specialty supplier might still offer something like it.

    • @Mike_Neukam
      @Mike_Neukam 4 роки тому

      The later trucks had ball joints instead of king pins and you could set the caster and camber by changing bushings. Fixed and adjustable bushings are available. The older setup with king pins had no provision for adjustment.

    Thanks for the video, I've got a '67 F-100 w/ power drums and have a few questions:
    1 - Are the radius arms and i-beams the same between 5th Gen (67-72) and 6th Gen (73-79)? If not, it seems the only benefit to getting a full 6th gen setup versus aftermarket spindles is just to avoid messing with the kingpins
    2 - I see kits with supplied spindles as well as kits that use the drum spindles, any reason to avoid the latter other than risking your spindles might be toast?
    3 - Proportional valve? I always thought needed for discs but a factory drum setup wouldn't have that
    thanks

    Thanks for this video Jeff, I have been waiting for a good how to on this. I am swapping a 76’ onto my 69’ and have discussed the subject on Fordification. Two quick questions for you:
    1). I don’t have a lift in my shop, how else besides installing the assembly can I test the king pins?
    2.) Is it possible to pull the king pins and just swap the spindles ?
    Keep up the great work !

    • @AutoRestoMod
      @AutoRestoMod  4 роки тому

      Not sure of a good way to be honest. You don't need a ton of weight, just enough to stabilize the arm and prevent movement. Broken down like we had ours, you can tell pretty quick if they are bad.
      From what I've read you are better served using the arms that came with the spindles due to the changes Ford made in the steering stops.

I have DJM lowering ibeams on my 71 now and was wanting to make sure I get the correct king pins for the spindles. Also will need to get new calipers or atleast rebuild the one I have with the setup. Ford is batting a thousand when it comes to bad suspension design in the 60s. Sorry Ford guys but their suspension designs were pretty bad across the board for a very long time. I have one and I like some of the cars and trucks but they really left allot to be desired in the suspension area.
    I haven't seen the I beam bender in a long time which is why many used a torch.
