    The lead up to the weekend certainly hasn’t slowed down the space industry with a mountain of stuff to cover today. SpaceX hosted some special visitors at Starbase recently and they were particularly interested in a specific prototype onsite. Plenty happening at the build site as well as Raptor 2 development news from Texas. The James Webb Space Telescope is scheduled to take flight right before this video goes live. And SpaceX launched Turksat 5B earlier this week along with CRS-24, at the same time as setting 2 new company records in the process.

    I just have to shake my head. SpaceX has _landed safely_ 100 Falcon 9 boosters. This is more _landings_ than most other current rockets have had _flights._ The few rockets that have had more flights have all been in use for decades as well, and most of those are now retired. They also have increased their launch frequency to insane levels. This year will see 24 or 25 launches. That STILL is more than most currently operated rocket systems have accumulated in their lifetime. And with three launch facilities (2 at Canaveral and 1 at Vandenburg) plus the option to also launch Falcon 9s from the two platforms if the Starship schedule does not fully use them, that might increase even more.
      The first booster has now been launched, retrieved and reused 11 times. Something previously only the Space Shuttle did. Well Virgin's Spaceplanes probably have more flights, but they do not handle payloads, only passengers and they barely touch outer space. Falcon has revolutionized the Space game. And hopefully will continue to do so for a LOOOONG time, setting many more such records. And soon to be joined by SS/SH.

    Can you imagine NASA Astronauts checking out the spacious, luxurious, technology savvy HLS and then cram their butts into the Artemis capsule for a miserable cramped ride with 1980’s technology to the moon. Here is the HLS and it’s already going to the moon but it would have to have the fuel to bring them home as well and then it wouldn’t be in orbit for the next crew. But the astronauts have to look at the HLS space and the Artemis capsule space and wonder wtf.

    • @donjones4719
      @donjones4719 2 роки тому +1

      Astronauts actually *will* know they could have a ride to the Moon with quarters just as spacious and comfortable as on HLS. In the following mission profile I've come up with a regular Starship will be able to make the trip to the lunar rendezvous with HLS (in NHRO or LLO) and return with no refueling necessary. Relying on lunar refueling for crew returns is a big hurdle NASA isn't willing to cross for a while, but this mission can be done without it.
      This Journey Starship (JSS, as I call it) can have quarters and life support duplicating those on that NASA will already have approved for HLS. It will simply carry "only" ~20 tonnes of cargo. How many Moon rocks can be studied, anyway? To address concerns over launch and catch with humans on board the crew can taxi to LEO on Dragons. Having enough propellant on board to decelerate to LEO is difficult, but if just the crew and minimal payload are carried then it's possible, at least according to a couple of competent sounding guys I checked with. The JST will return and catch autonomously.

    Another excellent presentation with lots of vivid and exciting animations and videos. The coverage of the booster of the OLM clearly showed a worrisome lack of adequate protection for the GSE tank farm and lots of infrastructure, piping, isolated tall tanks shockingly close to the OLM. The earth berm appears to be about ten meters high, less than half the height of the GSE tanks and about as high as the OLM. As the booster lifts off those numerous Raptor engines are going to hit that concrete surface under the OLM with twice the blast of the Saturn V and fill that entire area with twice the exhaust of the Saturn V flying out radially, exerting quite a bit of lateral force on everything in its path, including those LOX and liquid methane tanks. Fingers crossed.

    • @elihavalot8111
      @elihavalot8111 2 роки тому +5

      That is worrisome, how exposed those GSE tank farm tanks are to the booster's rocket blast during the initial phase of liftoff. I wonder if anyone could demonstrate this with an animation, since there have been so many animations of the launch, some of which portray the booster exhaust as blasting away just to the south, for no reason, or extending outward from the OLM in all directions, as it would, but with so little power that it is very unrealistic. Animating the gigantic fireball that would happen when the booster knocks over the LOX and liquid methane tanks and ignites the mixture might be tricky, but it would really be dramatic.

    • @silkaeichorn5381
      @silkaeichorn5381 2 роки тому +3

      @@elihavalot8111 I'll say it would be dramatic, to have the booster blast the GSE tanks over and ignite the LOX and liquid methane that would then leak out. It surprises me that SpaceX has not fabricated a much more effective blast diversion system to deal with so many raptor engines firing so close to those tanks and to the flat concrete surface beneath the OLM. Any kind of deflection system would be better than nothing, with slats or a curved surface under the OLM, and streamlined shields for the GSE tanks, between them and the OLM.

    There are quite a number of animations of the Starship being launched by the booster, but none of them provide a realistic portrayal of how the rocket blast would interact with the GSE tank farm. Some videos even "show" the rocket blast from the booster billowing out to the south, away from the GSE tank farm, when that is not what is going to happen, unless some major changes are made in the OLM and surrounding structures. With around thirty Raptor engines firing so close to the flat concrete surface under the OLM, there will be so much rocket blast erupting from under the OLM directly toward the GSE tanks that it would be equivalent to a half dozen or so Raptors firing directly at the GSE tank farm. Are those tanks so securely fastened to their bases that they would resist so much lateral force from rather hot rocket exhaust? Would the LOX and liquid methane just be blasted away, or would they ignite into a rather large fireball? Everyone on earth would learn about it within hours.

    • @silkaeichorn5381
      @silkaeichorn5381 2 роки тому +4

      I was hoping that someone would take up the challenge and make an animation of how the booster's exhaust would knock over the GSE tanks and cause a gigantic fireball with the oxygen and methane in those big GSE tanks, but no one seems to want to warn SpaceX about that possibility, even if it would be monumentally embarrassing for SpaceX.

    • @elihavalot8111
      @elihavalot8111 2 роки тому +3

      @@silkaeichorn5381 Most supporters of Marcus and SpaceX probably want to downplay any risks from launching the booster, since so many of us are extremely excited by the prospect of SpaceX actually succeeding in bringing the cost of space flight down so much that we can realistically colonize the moon, build much more elaborate habitats in orbit around it and the earth, and even begin to colonize Mars, but they may be missing an important issue in the need for protection of those GSE tanks. I would hate to see that massive fireball you just described, but it seems plausible that it would happen without more protection for them, from the booster's blast.

    • @silkaeichorn5381
      @silkaeichorn5381 2 роки тому +3

      @@elihavalot8111 I can understand anyone wanting to help SpaceX and Marcus, but it would be pretty humiliating to have the booster blast the GSE tank farm so violently that the LOX and liquid methane tanks rupture, the mixture ignites and creates a gigantic fireball, causing a LOT of damage and giving the media another huge disaster to cackle about. I had hoped that one of the people who have done animations of the launch might want to do an animation of the booster blasting the GSE tanks and causing a huge conflagration, to coax SpaceX into addressing the concern in a tweet, at least, or, perhaps, to fabricate an effective blast diversion system.

    To me, the most important contribution of the "SpaceX way" to society/humanity is its way of solving problems. If I may over-simplify: find the most sustainable solution to a well-chosen problem/objective. Design well but test and iterate long before attempting to create a perfect design solution. Get stake-holders to understand and tolerate incremental failures and be willing to backtrack and try other techniques. Don't be delayed by trying to make good on investments in prototypes that don't work. Don't get distracted by adding requirements that do not pull in the chosen direction.
    With that said, I wonder if we (humanity) could successfully apply principles such as these, as a cohesive people, to our growing Climate Crisis? Anyway, you Marcus are bringing the SpaceX message to the world and beautifully.

    I am nit picking here, but should these ships really be called 'Starships'? We never taken anyone further than the moon and literally centuries away from travelling to another star system, to me this would be like calling a Canal Boat an Oceanic Cruiser or a short ranged city car a Continental munching Grand Tourer, lol

    • @MarcusHouse
      @MarcusHouse  2 роки тому +1

      I'm not a big fan of the name. I liked BFR myself, or even ITS. Saying that, it is just a name. The Saturn V was never going to Saturn, or Mercury going to Mercury etc.

    • @Nemoticon
      @Nemoticon 2 роки тому

      @@MarcusHouse I don't mind them having 'names' like Saturn 5 and what not, it's the classification of them I'm curious about. On the verge of become a space-faring civilisation, we should pin these kind of things down early.

    I heard the news of Chinese space station modules were close to collide with starlink satellites . is that true ?

    • @MarcusHouse
      @MarcusHouse  2 роки тому +1

      I believe to. Personally, I think they should just raise Space Stations above the satellite networks over time. Then they wouldn't need to keep adjusting them. Would also be more efficient as they wouldn't need to orbit raise as much. Downside is a little more radiation exposure though.

    12.5 degree gimbal range seems more likely, as there is no limit to freedom of movement in any radial direction.

    Very good video Marcus. I hope you had a good Christmas. My inlaws being well into their 80s, my mother in law has passed on the holiday cooking chores to me (my wife doesn't cook), so I made dinner. Then, afterwards, I went for a nice long walk in the country air and smoked my Christmas cigar, then came back here and have been enjoying a nice bottle of port while watching your video. All in all, a very nice Christmas indeed. Hope yours was just as good.
    Also, the James Webb Space Telescope was successfully launched. How's that for a Christmas present?

  • @lucianoleonetti7864

    Webb telescope is eventually costing three to ten times the initial budget (foreseen in the range of 1-3.5 billions USD) and took 11 years longer than expected to be launched. It was ready by 2016, when they started to discover construction faults, which took 5 years and 1.2 Billions USD additional costs to fix (i.e. more than the initial budget foreseen for construction, launch etc). Only considering the cost of multiple human errors in assembling the telescope caused 600 m USD additional costs or 50% of fixing all post-production problems.
    Considering the investment cost, each operational year of the telescope will cost from 1 to 1.8 billions USD.
    Considering costs and delays, do you think it would have been possible to foresee a last-minute (well, last years) addition of a dock to the telescope body to attach additional modules, including fuel tanks, that could be sent through any cargo spacecraft? This could have extended the operational life of the telescope by 10 years at least.

    The view of the Starship engine bay is great. My 2020 Mustang GT is far less complicated and gets way better fuel mileage. I would relish the chance to pilot the Starship...just to compare acceleration and handling characteristics you know. Just a quick lap around the moon and I'll bring her back clean.

    Also, when at L2 it vertically orbits an invisible object.

    Surely, at 4:47, given that SpaceX, Australians and 95% of the rest of the planet work in metric, why take the lead from (I guess) a US tweeter who converted what would be a metric distance into Imperial? Isn''t it worth just the extra minute to recalculate the values in the original units?

    The graphic of the JWST orbiting L2 doesn't have the craft rotating. it would have to be rotating, right? If it does that, it can capture just about anything.
