WELL DONE MAESTRO
I ordered it last night after viewing your video. I adore little synths and I like, in total contrast with you, the look of this Moog-synth! I love PWM and this little synth has that! ! Big fun garanteed!! greetz
Thanks Robin, and now on order!
Sounds lovely. So much Moog richness!
2 years later, I just scored one of these on eBay, with a nice wooden stand. Cannot wait to mess about with it. Nice presentation you did here. Kind of wish I got mine new, but I also like stuff with a bit of its own history.
When I was a wee lad back in the 1970s, I remember seeing in electronics magazines how to build your own synthesizer. Even though this isn’t a true “build your own synthesizer”, I bought it so I can get that feel of building my own synth! Also, I am very interested in learning about synthesis. I think something like this is going to be very cool.
Tempting looks a fun box and sounds well Moog :)
Boy am I glad I just ordered one...gonna go well with Berhinger d and microbrute🤖
Buying it for sure. excellent video. really loved the sounds that were coming out of the modular combo. I have a dsi pro 2 and a hydrasynth but no modular at all and they both have sooo much cv capability. Very excited to have the werkstatt rollin.
I got the same rig and just ordered the Werkstatt. So excited to start messing with em!
@@supermariofp371 same rig!? nice. what are the odds.
7:15 word. Going to trade my Roli for this. Congratulations indeed.
I agree. A thank you goes way farther with me.
Great demo 👍🏾
Nice. Moogs have been way out of my pricerange for so long, I just hope they do not get ripped away before I can save up the money. Sound really nice, love it!
I was given the impression these would likely run out at Sweetwater sometime after Christmas. If your still wanting to buy one I'm afraid your running out of time.
@@AnthonyGoodley That is just the story of my life.
@@chent They are on sale too. Instead of $199 they are $159. I'd guess you may have two months.
Superb demo Robin, - Moog now?, does this mean you're now officially a tier 1 UA-cam influencer?
Obviously, I've always considered you tier 1, but I know you've expressed your doubts in the past.
Much love from London
lol
wow moog gave away a bucketload of werkstatts
great cardboard box unpacking sounds. im gonna make a samplepack from my own box, hehe. nicely
Aaaaaand ordered! (Well, now waiting for Thomann to get it in stock :) )
Wonderful rewiew
great video - thanks for sharing!
(I think you should adjust that internal trimmer though...)
The problem with the original gate out/in was that incoming gates wouldn’t sound as loud as gates triggered from the keyboard - you could add your own proper modded gate in to work around this. 🙂
I have one, best Moog I ever bought !
It's really good!
Fun with 0-coast and other semi- modulars
@@timdailey2690 I modified mine to fit in Eurorack. Best $200 module ever. lol
@@DBCisco How hard was it to get it in Eurorack?
@@CitizenOfEverywhere I drilled four holes in the back of the case and mounted it in the rack then reassembled it. It isn't flush but it works.
Moog is my kind of company
I watched your review first....then the other 2.
Robin, could you tell me if the pin header for the expander has thru holes so you can still use the jumper cables with the expander board attached? They look like the pins that are male on the bottom and female on the top is what I mean by thru hole.
No, I don’t think so.
Although, as usual, I do love this video of yours very, very much, I do beg to differ in terms of the looks. I think it look pretty slick 😉
Have you tried adding a second eurorack oscillator to turn it into a 2 osc synth?
Yeah... that’s what I did in the video 😁
Well... they definitely did not find a bunch of old boards they had to get rid of. It now contains a few options (like a gate in) that were not on the original edition.
I bought one because I want to build my own synthesizer. Yeah, I know, Werkstatt is not a real build and also not the reason for buying it. The Werkstatt is a nice starting point without breaking the bank for developing my own modules. Building and testing one module at a time.
I've now been playing with it for a few days and love it already. It is well built, has a great sound and gives a lot of audible fun right out of the box. The modules interconnections are almost "hard coded" but the CV Expander does add a few nice options to connect it to a keyboard and other modules.
Time to start building :-)
I had my heart set on buying one of these until I saw your review. I'm new to analog modular and semi modular, and I traded my vintage Ensoniq ESQ1 (kept my rackmount ESQm) for an Arturia MiniBrute and I love it. Then I bought a Crave and love it also. I was intrigued with the Werkstatt because Moog, but I've decided not to buy because no MIDI, and your review revealed that the GLIDE does not work with a CV keyboard...and only on the onboard buttons... I have a Keystep 37 also (black). No glide because no MIDI was the deal breaker for me concerning the Werkstatt....for now....although it is a great sounding unit and not much money; but I think I could spend my money more wisely on my next small analog synth. I should add that I'm no beginner here with a pretty well equipped home studio, but just new to modular and semi modular analog....THANK YOU for a GREAT review !
To follow up here....I went ahead and bought a used Werkstatt and I found the solution of no glide through the Keystep is to use the Moog and the Behringer Crave together thru MIDI with the Crave CV driving the Werkstatt. This provides glide on both units, and now essentially I have a two oscillator synth by combining the two...works great....I love it. Then of course I could hook the MIDI thru from the Crave to the Aturia MINIBRUTE as well. I'm not sure how far I want to go down the modular rabbit hole, but I'm liking these three semi-modular analog synths....a whole lot.
So you have so many more modulars and big and better synths. So what would make you buy a Werkstatt for?
I can't imagine that it can do anything all those other components in your rack can't.
I recently bought a Werkstatt and I've been having fun learning how it works. As a first analog Synth I think it's a great place to get started with.
I'm very tempted to buy a second one before they run out and are gone forever. Would hooking two of these up together make sense?
Yes indeed, Moog sent it to me for review so I didn't buy it myself. Having two will bring some interesting possibilities including boosting the sound by using two oscillators together. But it depends on what you're trying to do It might be more interesting to get something different so you have two different worlds to play in.
Very very interesting! May I control it with an Arturia Minilab?
No, it doesn't have MIDI
Given that I reserve reading directions as a last resort, I neglected to modify the nylon washer. It just went on -- not sure whether/not to be concerned... Adding that Sweetwater is offering these as part of their early Black Friday sale, with a $40 discount.
Yea you no longer need to cut that. I heard that instruction was accidentally left over from the earlier version and has since been corrected. I've been watching a ton of videos on the Werkstatt-01.
04:36 who else thought that there are some Ham Slices inside the smiley bag? :D
100%. That was my initial reaction lol.
I thought maybe air dried beef :D
Just like we say in México... This is a little tiny spicy chile! (Lot of sound in tiny package)
:D Thank you :D
i got one really looking forward to putting the poster on my wall... and surprise.. no poster in the box :( great synth though :D
The same for me....
oh what? Why tho?
What stand are you using for the Werkstatt?
LOCI
What's the little silver Beringer bsox in the background, it looks like one of their turntable pre-amps.
not sure what you're looking at :)
Hi,thanks for replying, from 17.30 it's to the left of the big modular rack, just to the right of the top right hand corner of the build instructions paper.
@@stuartchapman5171 Oh, it's an HD400 hum eliminator
@@MoltenMusicTech, do they work, is it at the end of the signal chain, prior to your mixer?
cant believe they discontinued this. cant believe i got mine right before i found out it got discontinued
I picked up one of these a few years ago, I see that they have changed the expander as mine doesn’t say ‘gate in’
Yes, they’ve improved that
Does the new expander work on the 2014 issue? How did you do gate in with the old CV gate expander? I use CVA in
@@lennertcarmen1630 You use gate in via the "gate out" connection on the original. This sort of worked but was a bit of a fudge. This reissue has smoothed that out and changed the labelling. I don't believe this version of the expander will be available separately.
@@lennertcarmen1630 I’m not sure if it works, I would assume so. I think that it was just mislabelled on the previous version
How would I hook up the Werkstatt to a keystep to use a keyboard vs the buttons?
Exactly as I did in the video with my Keystep
@@MoltenMusicTech Thanks! I didn't get that far in the video before posting. Should of watched the entire video first. Cheers!
What’s the name of the keyboard he plugs it into?
Arturia Keystep 37
A mod-able, customizable device you (sort of) build yourself, a Creative Community - Apple could learn a lot from Moog.
Good video...I did not get the poster...🙁
Ah that’s weird
Mine just arrived.
No poster. NO POSTER!
that stinks :(
Wtf I’ve heard that from another too, I got one
❤❤
is it 3u in size?
Yes but not eurorack ready.
My stupid arse bought a new one 3 months ago for 220 and then bought the cv expander for 50 more!!! What a bummer! Could have saved 70 bucks!! Lol
man that thing sounds so good, i feel like the simplicity of it allows u to get to a great sound quickly. Do I impulse buy this or save for a mother32!!??? HELP
Half price at Signal Sounds right now. £100. Fill your boots!
I hope by "circuit bending" he means modding. I would hate to think that someone would circuit bend a Moog.
Blip bloop, blippity bloop meh...

Mr.Molten you patched the Sinister Bass incorrectly...that's why it didn't sound like a mean-ass Bass! Look at the picture and patch it s l o w l y.👌
Otherwise great video. I've had the Moog Werkstatt for a while then they came out with CV Expansion Board a few years later so I bought THAT, then people were saying you have to
modify the Gate In part (as you mentioned)cuz original was a Gate Out blah,blah,blah...others said it doesn't matter go ahead and use the CV Expansion Board,
another said NO don't DO IT! You'll blow up your Moog and everything it's connected to! So I never put the CV Expander on...it's just been sitting in a box.
I'm writing Moog to see what their position is on the subject. I'm going to ask if they fixed all the new ones which come with the free patch cables and CV Expansion Board.💡🐾👌
Oh did I? Ho hum. I’m told that they have fixed it yes.
Gun to head; this or nts1?
I would shoot yourself for trying to compare two incomparable things. One is an analogue synth with knobs and controls for every parameter and CV patching of modulation. The other is a digital synth with effects and a single knob. If the interface isn't important to you then get software synths :D
@@MoltenMusicTech I should have been more specific. If money was an issue and you could only buy one was where I was going with that one
Ah, well in that case shoot yourself in the balls because the Werkstatt is twice the price of the NTS-1 so again it's not a fair comparison :D
I don't know mate, the Moog is a nicer synth for doing synth style things with and it's got all the CV and modulation. No contest really.
@@MoltenMusicTech thanks, i suppose
Strangley named? Not really, its just german for "Workshop", so given history of it you provide, pretty logical...
Strange to me, not being German :D
@@MoltenMusicTech No one's perfect.
hey dude, the shirt ... throw it away!
Oh, ok then
🤔
Whats the point of selling these disassembled? If you had to solder the components then it might have been fun but only putting a enclosure together whats the point in that? 🤦♂️
Sounds great though 😏👌
Beats me :D
I wondered that too, but pry just to be interesting
When your hair starts getting into the shot, it's time for a cut, or at least comb it.
Why, does it bother you?
Why would you not show how you connect it to the eurorack modules?! Dislike.
I'm sorry it was disappointing. I couldn't find a whole lot to do with the CV connections as it goes. Most of them are outputs and I tried a few times to shoot video explanations but couldn't find anything inspiring to show. It was more fun doing what I did and just making it up on the fly.
