  • Epic dive into this multi-module modular synth voice from Frequency Central. The build took a couple of days and I've compressed that down to 2 hours of the good stuff plus detailed calibration and testing. Use the index below to navigate.
Thanks to SynthCube for sending me the kit:

Well done for battling away at this, I pondered doing it but chickened out. It'll be really helpful for those who are brave enough. Since I had a DIY disaster with the Erica Delay I'm less keen on taking on a big build.

Nice walkthrough.... Desoldering is a pretty handy skill to learn also 🤭 also some flux will help with surface mount soldering

Hi Robin, Congratulations on building, troubleshooting and tuning the Product voice!
Good DIY demonstration. Good cautionary notes too on ensuring the stacking pcbs are correct before soldering the mating headers. Also their one-letter 'codes' for transistors! N=NPN, P=PNP, F=jFET
I empathize your rework for the SMT-IC, I have had to unsolder a multi-pin header socket from a board after I realized I put it in the wrong side of the board!
The secret to unsoldering the board holes is using a low temperature solder and a lot of solder wicking. Also good tip to solder the SMT parts first if included.

    Brilliant brilliant video. Just awesome.
Just finished making this myself. Vital tip regarding the parallel 220K resistor over the existing 18K component to get the 1v/oct tracking to behave - this was also essential for me. This isn't well described in the build guide and should be. As I was pre-warned, I left the legs in the 18K component quite long and soldering on the extra component was easy.
I sourced all the parts myself using the links in the build guide. The guide is a bit confusing regarding the trimmers needed for the project. On the rotary switch board PCB a 4K7 is indicated (the only one of this value in the project). The BOM lists a 4K7, but links to a 5K (of the appropriate vertical orientation - close enough). The BOM also lists an additional 10K trimmer for the rotary board (also of the appropriate vertical orientation). Ultimately, I used the 5K (as also used in the video) - perhaps if I had used the 10K, the 220K parallel resistor trick wouldn't have been necessary. The BOM also lists a single horizontal 10K trimmer for the VCO board, but you need two (though you can, like I did, bend the "spare" vertical 10K trimmer to fit if you use the 5K on rotary switch board). If I had my time again, I'd order an extra horizontal 10K trimmer for the VCO board.
I ordered 100x 10K resistors to allow me to select 5 which were well matched for the rotary switch board. This was easy enough. The build guide helpfully says it's more important that these match than the exact value. In the end, the ones I used measured 9.97K and the 1v/oct tracking works nicely (with the 220K parallel trick).
Overall, I found that the build was long but not technically too tricky (and I am far from an expert - though I have built a FC power supply and a couple of drum modules). However, I suspect I wouldn't have been able to perform the calibration with just the instructions in the build guide - the demonstration of the steps in the video are really really helpful.

For the female headers, just pull out the pin after you last pin then snip with cutters. Then just neaten up with a sharp blade,

Interesting... I usually calibrate all my modular oscillator pulse width manual controls to 50/50, - i.e. absolute square wave, - while the manual knob is at 12 o'clock, and then use the CV input to add the offset, so it modulates around the central duty cycle, - have I been doing it wrong these last 20yrs?

    • @MoltenMusicTech
      @MoltenMusicTech  3 роки тому

No I think that’s right and was what I went for initially but found it didn’t go both ways. So it went from square to pulse turning right but not turning left.

Im not getting a reading on test 2 for 7.5v on PRODUCT dono what to do any advice 😕.
I tried the trimmer I still get nothing on my multimeter, the first test point works

All I can suggest is that you keep checking joints, keep resoldering and then do it again.

SynthCube is great - my only wish is that they could use a sticker that could be removed easily, and then we could send the plastic bags back to them for re-use.

We mention on our kit boxes that we will gladly take back all the plastic bags for re-use!! Thank you for the suggestion!

@@synthcube749 are FC Pcb quality typical of diy modules? The througholes seem to be Teflon with a thin layer of foil that can't really handle component removal.
