  • How do you pick up a room when you’re too overwhelmed to breathe? Bu remembering there are only 5 things in any room 1. Trash 2. Dishes 3. Laundry 4. Things with a place and 5. Things without a place. By cleaning in categories its easier to stay on task and avoid paralysis and overwhelm.

Thank you for being so realistic! A lot of people without depression don't know how it feels to look at a room and feel so overwhelmed. You make it seem managable and make me feel like I'm not alone, so thank you so much!!!

I absolutely adore that you look like a regular person in your videos. You're not dressed up, makeup on, etc. You look the same as I look day-to-day, around the house. It's hard to explain, but it just feels like such a huge relief to know that I'm not alone. Sometimes, I feel like everyone else is doing all the things and has everything together all the time, and I'm one of the only ones who isn't or doesn't. Your videos remind me that's not true, and that I'm doing just fine. I discovered you through seeing your book on Amazon, and it's the first time I've felt like someone really "gets it", in terms of the practical reality of all this stuff, especially for people dealing with barriers. You're so kind and non-judgmental, and that is everything. I can't thank you enough for doing all of this, but THANK YOU!!

"This space will care for me well now." Love that. I forget that's what cleaning/tidying is about, having a space that will care for me. I tend to make it a judgment -- I'm "good" or "bad" depending on the state of my home, but really it's about self nurture. Thank you.

Dear KC, I hope you read this comment. I went to your site but didn't see any way to send you a message there. I just started reading How to Keep House While Drowning yesterday and it is already helping me immensely. I struggle with depression and ADHD. I have been in a real rut since the beginning of the year and it has been really hard. Anyway, I want to share something an ex-husband said to me once since this seems like the right place to get it off of my chest. I had spent a Sunday morning cleaning the whole house. After I was done, I offered to cook a roast and invite his parents over for dinner. He then said "with the house the way it is?" and I said "I just cleaned the entire house." He then said "not to my mom's standards"...... It was the single most hurtful thing anyone has ever said to me and it still hurts when it comes to mind. And worse, he couldn't even see anything wrong with what he had said. I am so thankful I have better people in my life these days and I am SO glad that I found your book. Thank you for sharing all of this with those of us who struggle. Cheers!

Oof. I'm so sorry. And oooo that makes me angry! YOU spent the morning cleaning, YOU are going to cook a meal and provide food for him and his family, YOU are opening your house and your time to other people/guests, and he's making comments about it not being up to his "mom's standards"??? I'm sorry, she doesn't live here. YOU do and he does. If she doesn't like it, she doesn't have to come. If HE doesn't like it, then HE should get up and clean to "her standards". Omg 😡 you got up and cleaned the whole house during the morning hours. You did way more than zero. I congratulate you on that. And for moving on from someone you saw wasn't helping you but hindering you.

@@WriterOfMany Right. Honestly, that’s probably one of the reasons why he’s an ex-husband. Instead of saying that he should’ve either helped her clean (and shown her cleaning tips in a non poopy way) OR say, “You’ve done a lot today babe let’s chill. I’ll clean next weekend and if you’re still in the mood to host we can invite Momma and Daddy over next Sunday.” Best answer is the latter.

With as much as Marie Kondo changed my life, you changed it more.
I used to be a hoarder and I was completely disorganized. I stumbled across Tidying Up on Netflix and it set me on a whole new direction... Straight into tidyness OCD. I already have OCD so it makes sense that would happen. I also eventually became a minimalist and drastically downsized my belongings. I played numbers games and obsessed about not being minimal enough. Lol.
Becoming a tidy minimalist definitely had a lot of benefits but it had unforseen downsides as well, such as having panic attacks when my space becomes too dysfunctional. Which started happening a lot as I had my baby via C section and then severe postpartum depression. (Side note, I'm also physically disabled and neurodivergent including autism!) I've also become a "bulimic shopper"- I impulsively buy things I don't need and then promptly return or donate them, because I still have hoarding habits but only having items that really serve me is really important to me.
My mom accidentally stumbled across your TED talk the other day, sent it to me, and I found myself in tears watching it. I had an audible credit I didn't know what to do with from a free trial, so I went and bought your Audiobook. Absolute game changer. The idea that Care Tasks are morally neutral was a complete revelation to me.
Now I understand better why I am a minimalist and why I prefer my space to be tidy: it serves me. But when I am unable to do my Care Tasks in a timely manner, that doesn't mean I'm a failure. Occasionally buying too much and then getting rid of it later (or even keeping it) is also not a moral failing.
Who I was when I was a hoarder was not a failure, she was struggling just to get through the day, and wanted to keep anything that reminded her of better times through inanimate objects. Not being a hoarder simply serves me (and now my family) so much better.
Now I look at the looming chores and tell myself "it will get done when it gets done, and future me will thank the me that does it." I allow myself to leave the house without picking up our entire room first. I allow myself to go to bed without picking up our entire room first. I tidy when I have the time and energy and I relish in my clean space. But I no longer beat myself up for it not being immaculate 100% of the time.
I know this comment was a million years long and probably nobody will read it but it felt good to get all of this out. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Your book is one of the best books I have EVER read, and I'm already re-reading it. Thank you for helping me feel human.

    • @brendalg4
      @brendalg4 Місяць тому

Not saying this to be mean... saying it because you are settuig yourself up to fail. lnstead of buying too much and hoarding it... you just buy it anyway then get rid of it. This is a shopaholic. Someone who purchases things they don't need because they get a thrill from buying things. A therapist said they did a study... a large portion of people hoard because they don't have the money to rebuy. If you go through all your money, you'll be right back where you started

This method is how i clean my place now....no matter how messy it is. My adhd brain does really well with methods like this. Obviously, i still have struggles..... ill catch myself doing something like picking up laundry and then thinking oooh! lets go hang all of this up, then ill start trying to organize my closet (lol).... but, if i can just remind myself to keep with this method, i can pull myself back on track.
Also, KC Davis......thank you SO MUCH for reminding folks that basic care tasks are morally neutral. We are not "bad" if our place is a mess. Taking the morality part out of it has helped me so much, and I'd imagine it helps others as well. 🖤🖤🖤

I found you on TT and just adore you. There’s so much going on in my life that I’m quite literally drowning daily in decisions I can’t make. I’m a mom of 6 with depression, anxiety, ocd, and adhd. My husband has adhd and ptsd. We also homeschool, his mother was a borderline hoarder and my parents had a maid so I don’t even know how to clean. I literally have never had a house guest over in the 5 years we’ve lived in this house because my home embarrasses me. We tidy but I don’t know how to CLEAN- nor do I ever have the time and motivation. The house also needs many repairs because it’s old and kids destroy things.
Your videos give me hope that one day it won’t be like this. I try, some days even thinking about trying is too much.

But yesterday I took out the trash, saw a spill in my driveway, went looking for a shovel, realized my laundry sink was clogged, went looking for drano, got on the computer to order it, and started watching hair videos. So now I do the whole house of trash, then wipe the interior spill when I'm mopping the kitchen.

Or sometimes I do the opposite (put the dirty ones in the bucket and wash them in the sink). It helps a lot.

I might not be remembering it entirely accurately, but one idea is to make a big pile of all the papers, and then write/or type what each task is onto a notepad/document. Then DO NOT do them, just estimate, how long will each one really take? And then, which one to do first. She writes that a lot of time these kind of paper tasks are overwhelming because we assume (hope?) they'll be a lot quicker to do than they really are, but subconsciously we know it will take a long time so we don't want to do them!

We don't have much furniture and we're getting some (yay!) But I have ADHD and autism and depression and anxiety and ocd so I feel so bad that I have such a difficult time with my basic tasks. I stare at my laundry pile growing and my recycle pile and my donation bin and I just want to be able to have more motivation. Thank you for sharing your TED talk! That's how I found you and hopefully things will turn around soon. 0nce we make spots for things and I know where everything goes it will be much easier for me, i think. I'm not a failure, I just need to do things differently.
    Thank you KC!

Thank you! I so appreciate you showing your messy space. Just watching you break this down and do it was so helpful. It’s good to see someone else who has a messy space show and tell exactly how they cleaned it. I get so overwhelmed and seeing other people’s videos cleaning their mess which isn’t actually messy just makes it harder for me to get motivated. This was so great and inspirational. 💕

One tip to eliminate most of this work is to put the trash in the trash can to begin with. Also, the dishes in the sink or dishwaher as they're done being used. Put things away as soon as they're finished being used.

Thanks for pinning down that method. I think I'm doing this in my light days but it helps to have such a checklist for the dark days.
One thing I'm doing additional to that from time to time: review my "does not have a place"-pile If there are certain clusters visible. And If there are, I decide do GIVE them a place right in that room I've discoverd them. Thats how I came to several big boxes next to my front door. They contain empty bags and empty bottles. Such reviews show my natural behaviour and help to reduce clutter.

That's how my brain works, too, when I help others with their spaces. As per my own home, usually my home, throughout the day anything that is garbage or will become garbage I trash right away. Plus, everyone knows the living room is not anyone's bedroom and so no clothes or shoes are allowed there. And no eating outside the kitchen/diniing room area is another awesome preventable measure.

Hi!! Do you (or anyone else reading this) have tips for someone like me who struggles with the very first step? The part where we pick up the trash and throw them away? I have this massive guilt when it comes to throwing away things... because I worry so much about the environment and my ecological footprint, I try to recycle & reuse as much as I can. Therefore things that look like trash to other people may not look like trash to me, so I struggle with clearing them from my living space.
I've read your excellent & super comforting book twice and totally get the part where you say "you can't save the planet when you're depressed" but at the same time, how do I train my brain to recognize that trash is trash when I go around my house looking for them? Thank you :)

I'm honestly so glad to see someone show a realistic example of what a lot of ppl, including myself, are dealing with. Most prganizational/housekeeping/self help/cleaning content starts out with a 'messy' area that when I look at it I'm like please, you call that messy? You should see my place. But all jokes aside, seeing my reality vs what most cleaning content is showing doesn't match up. I just end feeling bad about how I can't even do something as simple as keeping a space clean consistently. I know I can keep a space clean but it's keeping it that way that's an issue. So I really appreciate you being vulnerable and showing us what your place looks like. I feel seen, I feel like somebody gets it and it makes me feel like I can do this. 🫂❤

And once you get the place clean develop the HABIT of always throwing the trash away right away, putting things in their “homes” more consistently, also remember if you can’t find a home for something that may be an indication to let it go or that you need to get rid of something else in order to bring that item in.

The part that is extraordinarily distressing to me though is that it always gets to this point. Once I get the steam to clean it up, it’s fine. I can do it. But one of the things that keeps me so paralyzed is the depression at the fact that I always end up here. It feels hopeless.

Oh this is wonderful to watch, so easy to follow. But I have chronic back pain, I can’t bend or lift anything over the weight of a gallon jug, I’m doing PT to strengthen core, and have had a back procedure done but waiting for relief to kick in, but at 61 and living alone, with no family to help, I feel endlessly frustrated. Plus grieving loss of my Mom who lived with me in hospice has made it all the more daunting and unmanageable. I “manage” to keep my “living room turned piano studio” tidy-ish cos it’s where I teach piano to 20 students a week. Suggestions?
